Poetry Month: Things Not As They Appear

April is National Poetry Month. I’m celebrating with Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day Challenge. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This poem is from the sixth, and the theme is things-not-as-they-appear.

Camouflage

Be wary of figures of speech

they aren’t what they seem

Metaphors lurk

in murky swamps of text

a moss covered log

that with a snap

is revealed as an alligator

Similes are less bold

like a horse with a plastic horn

that knows it isn’t a unicorn

but would like to pretend

otherwise

Beware of figures of speech

they’re keeping an eye on

you

I Love UPS!

Just look what they brought me today! My proof of A Boy Named Rabbit, which, btw, looks GREAT! I’ve already ordered my first batch, and will have them in time for my two Meet the Author Eco-Tours on the 25th and 28th. Woohooo! Doing the happy dance, here. Don’t you just love it when your newly released books show up?

Poetry Month: Secrets

April is National Poetry Month. I’m celebrating with Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day Challenge. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This poem was from the second, the topic: secrets.

Blossom

The best kind of secrets

are the ones you are waiting

to share

that blossom warm and bright

in your heart

and make you smile

for no reason at all

because you know something

no one else does

yet.

Tell me those secrets

I will share your smile

and we will be twice as incandescent

together

The worst kind of secrets

no one wants to share

pain

shame

guilt

like an anchor

dragging you down but you have to

tread water and smile

because you want no one to know

Tell me those secrets

I will cry with you

and help you chip at the chains

holding you down

one day you will break free

You can escape alone

but you don’t have to

Tell me your secrets

and I’ll tell you mine

Still Cold Where You Are?

Belinda’s Dream Rose and Black Gamecock Iris

Well, believe me, it sure isn’t here! It hit 90 today, and the sun was just broiling down on me. I had to stop my yard work much earlier than I planned and come inside to the a/c. If you doubt it’s already full summer here, take a look at these two pics I took earlier. My roses are blooming like mad, and things like cigar plant (cuphea) and Amistad salvia are running amok. Luckily, I know the roses and cuphea will continue straight through the summer heat. Will find out how Amistad does as it continues to get hotter. I love the dark purple, so I hope it won’t burn up. It’s already way too hot for petunias, violas, nasturtiums, and other plants we grow here in the winter. Florida. The rules are different here. 🙂

and I’m told they will love the salvia, too.

Taking a break from yard work. It’s so stinkin’ hot out there today, I was getting dizzy. So, came in and made this, just for fun. Please feel free to share! 🙂 In fact, if you haven’t shared anything in recent days, I encourage you to scroll through the last week’s posts and share to your heart’s content. We will all appreciate it, and we’ll do the same for you. Have a great rest of the weekend!

I finally hired a Virtual Assistant, and she’s proving to be worth her weight in gold, already. (More on that later.) For starters, she’s set me up on Instagram and Google+. If any of you visit those sites, please stop by and Follow me. I’d be ever so grateful! 🙂 We’re trying to get it off the ground. Thanks so much!

Poetry Month: Resistance

April is National Poetry month. I’m doing Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day contest. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This is from Day 1, a poem about resistance.

Negated

There’s a

no

in my heart but not

on my lips

You asked for something I wasn’t

willing to give but you didn’t

wait for my answer

You assumed it had to be

yes

My smile is a double agent

a carefully constructed lie

I drag my feet and hope you change

your mind

If you don’t

there will come a revolution

Benefits of a box set

Secret Worlds box set

I know I’ve been missing in action for the last few months, but I couldn’t resist dropping by to share my experiences with taking part in a box set with 20 other authors. First of all, if you haven’t heard of the Secret Worlds box set yet, you can check it out here. The set is an amazing deal, currently at 99 cents and containing 21 full-length novels from bestselling authors. I’ve been enjoying working my way through the offerings and have lots more fun reading ahead of me!

Okay, self promotion aside, it’s time to get back to the point. Why might you choose to take part in a box set as an author? Here were my reasons for joining in:

  • To get that coveted “USA bestselling author” tag at the end of my name. Our organizer was able to launch last year’s box set onto the USA bestsellers list, and we hope to do the same this year.
  • To learn new marketing techniques from other authors. It’s amazing how, when everyone pitches in, you get to learn from other authors’ strengths. For example, the teaser images some of our box set’s participants are churning out are unbelievable!
  • To add visibility to my other books. Thousands of copies of the box set sold should mean at least hundreds of new readers who want to read the next book in my series. (I hope!)

All of that said, I don’t recommend that small fry like me organize a box set. I can tell that our organizer is putting in three times as many hours as I am, and her experience is what will make Secret Worlds sink or swim. But I do think it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for box-set opportunities to participate in. Because learning new skills and increasing your visibility is one of the most important things an indie author can do. Well, that and write….

Virtual part invite – new release THE WORLD AND THE STARS

Just a quick note to say, if anyone has the time – tomorrow (today? – not sure, what with time differences), Friday 10th, anyway, I’d like to invite you to drop in to the virtual facebook party I’m hosting for the release of my latest book – an anthology of science fiction and fantasy stories by my writer’s group and friends.

The World and the Stars 500And yes, I have a story in there as well as acting as publisher.

We’ve dedicated the book to our founder, Peter T Garratt, who sadly passed away at the young age of 54, and is much missed.

He would have been very proud of this book.

I’m planning entertainment, chat, and a few competitions with small prizes, so even if you only have a few minutes, you’re welcome to just drop in.

8pm – 11pm British Summer Time, BST, (you can find a time converter here) and the party is on facebook here

Hope to see a few of you there 😀

Oh, and in addition, I’m offering FREE copies to anyone who would like to review…

If any of you guys are going to be in central Florida on Saturday, April 25, or Tuesday, April 28, maybe you might have time to come for a fun trip on the St. Johns River. Captain Jeanne Bell and her photographer husband, Doug Little, have invited me to do a Meet the  Author tour with them, at 1:30 both days. Here’s the way the press release reads:

“Best selling Amazon author, Marcia Meara, will be conducting a Meet the Author talk onboard the Naiad, her inspiration for the Undine, in her novel Swamp Ghosts. Accompanying her for a tour of the scenic St. Johns River will be Captain Jeanne Bell, a/k/a/ Maggie Devlin, in Swamp Ghosts.

At 1:30 PM on Saturday April 25, and again on Tuesday April 28, the Naiad will leave from Highbanks Marina, located at 488 W. Highbanks Road, DeBary, FL.  We will retrace the tour that inspired the author to write Swamp Ghosts, accompanied by the individuals who are characterized in the book. Enjoy a beautiful, nature-filled afternoon aboard the Naiad, and find out how it all came about.

After the tour, Marcia will be available to autograph copies of her books. Sign up for her monthly newsletter, and you’ll receive a free download of Summer Magic: Poems of Life & Love

Don’t miss out on a relaxing, fun-filled afternoon on the river. For reservations, call St. Johns River Eco Tours at 386-626-9004.”

I’m really looking forward to this. I’ll be doing a reading at the beginning of the tour, and another at the end, and then just chatting with everyone about the book, and some of the things featured in the story, like the difference between albino and leucistic reptiles–or whatever the good passengers want to talk about. Plus, we’ll be stopping to view alligators and birds, and any other interesting wildlife along the way.

Of course, I know most of you probably can’t do this, even if you’d like to, but I wanted to share, and I hope you’ll pass the info along to your followers everywhere, in case some of them can. And even if you can’t come along on this particular tour, believe me, the regular narrated trip is fantastic, and well worth the price of the tickets.

You can book tours any time here: St. Johns River Eco Tours Click on Book Now. Scroll down to the Swamp Ghost tours (in red) to book one of mine, or stop on any other day that fits your schedule to book a “normal” tour.
