Benefits of a box set

Secret Worlds box set

I know I’ve been missing in action for the last few months, but I couldn’t resist dropping by to share my experiences with taking part in a box set with 20 other authors. First of all, if you haven’t heard of the Secret Worlds box set yet, you can check it out here. The set is an amazing deal, currently at 99 cents and containing 21 full-length novels from bestselling authors. I’ve been enjoying working my way through the offerings and have lots more fun reading ahead of me!

Okay, self promotion aside, it’s time to get back to the point. Why might you choose to take part in a box set as an author? Here were my reasons for joining in:

  • To get that coveted “USA bestselling author” tag at the end of my name. Our organizer was able to launch last year’s box set onto the USA bestsellers list, and we hope to do the same this year.
  • To learn new marketing techniques from other authors. It’s amazing how, when everyone pitches in, you get to learn from other authors’ strengths. For example, the teaser images some of our box set’s participants are churning out are unbelievable!
  • To add visibility to my other books. Thousands of copies of the box set sold should mean at least hundreds of new readers who want to read the next book in my series. (I hope!)

All of that said, I don’t recommend that small fry like me organize a box set. I can tell that our organizer is putting in three times as many hours as I am, and her experience is what will make Secret Worlds sink or swim. But I do think it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for box-set opportunities to participate in. Because learning new skills and increasing your visibility is one of the most important things an indie author can do. Well, that andΒ write….

  1. Hi, Aimee! So good to see you here. I can’t believe I missed this yesterday. (I don’t get notifications of other contributor’s posts, and I had an emergency eye issue, and spent the whole afternoon at the eye doctor’s. Gah.) At any rate, I LOVE this post, and the idea! I will be buying this set, for sure, and you’ve give us all something to think about and aim for. I can’t wait to see how it pays off for you over time. It’s bound to be a GREAT deal! May I ask which of your books is included in the set? Just curious. Can’t wait to check it out, and thank you so much for posting. BTW, the graphic is fantastic!! Tweeting and sharing everywhere I can.

    • PS…Just pre-ordered! Wow, what a collection, but the name (besides yours, of course) that jumped out at the me was Rainy Kaye. I was blown away by her novel, Summoned, and have the sequel waiting on my Kindle. I just know this set is going to be GREAT!!! Congratulations for being part of it, and I hope it does wonders for your individual sales. Something for ALL of us to consider, for sure.

    • I hope your eye’s okay! Your health should definitely take precedence over the internet, so don’t worry about not seeing my post until today. πŸ™‚

Shiftless is the novel I’ve included in the box set. I figure if people get the first book in the series and like it, they might pick up book two (and book three, which is in the works).

I agree about the graphic — there are several similar ones that contributors have made, and they blow me away! Thanks for sharing!

        • When I first started Summoned, I very nearly quit reading. I did NOT like either main character. I’m not sure why I soldiered on, but at some point, that book grabbed me by the throat and wouldn’t let go. It turned out to be amazing, and reminded me that sometimes, you need to give a book a chance. Rainy Kaye made a believer out of me, and I WILL read anything else she’s written. AND give it time to develop, if it happens that it fails to pull me in as quickly as I might like. I gave Summoned 5 stars. An amazing adaptation of the djinn legend.

      • Yes, thank you. My eye’s okay, and improving today. It’s the only one I use, and it was damaged by cataract surgery, so it’s already a problem. I got something in it, and we had to determine if it had scratched or damaged the eye, and some other things. It’s much better today.

I figured you’d go with Shiftless for just that reason, and it makes perfect sense. (I’m about halfway through Pack Princess, btw, but am having trouble squeezing in time to read right now. 😦 ) And I’m happy to share and hope others here are doing so, as well.
