Wednesday’s #NotesFromTheRiver – Barred Owls

Today’s #NotesFromTheRiver blog post features one of central Florida’s most beautiful birds, the barred owl. Hope some of you will check out the post, and share with your friends. Doug Little’s beautiful photos are worth the visit, alone. To see (and hear) for yourself, go here: #NotesFromTheRiver – Barred Owls

As many of you know, my Riverbend series is based on a fictional small Florida town, located not very far from where I live, and peopled with the eccentric characters who dwell in my slightly warped brain. The first book in the series, Swamp Ghosts, was inspired by my real life friends, Captain Jeanne Bell and her photographer husband, Doug Little. Sadly, we lost Jeanne a few months ago (see my post here), but Doug has decided the very best way to honor her memory is to continue with their extremely popular Eco tours aboard Jeanne’s custom-built boat, the Naiad.

Doug is an excellent wildlife photographer, and is filled with interesting and often amazing information on the habitat and history of the St. Johns River. He’s eager to share all of it, and to that end, Doug has completely revamped the St. Johns River Eco Tours website. Let me tell you, it is looking SHARP! There are lots of new features, including sections on local authors, exploring the river, downloadable bird and wildlife checklists, and tons of other goodies.

One of the brand new features is a weekly blog, and I’m extremely proud to say I’ve been asked to author it. I’m both honored and excited! Every Wednesday, I’ll be posting about wildlife, birds, new things spotted on the river, and any other topic that fits the theme of the blog:  “Notes From the River.”

I’m hereby inviting ALL of you to check out the “New and Improved” St. Johns River Eco Tours Website, and explore all the cool new things you’ll find there. Navigate the site via the links at the top of each page, most of which include dropdown menus.

You’ll be able to learn about the history of the river, ecology, local authors, the SJR Team, and more. PLUS, you’ll be able to book a tour, so you can see the wonders of the St. Johns River for yourself. It’s a fantastic, beautiful, and entertaining experience you’ll never forget. I know. I’ve been on the tour many, many times over the years, and I can honestly say it changed my life. It might or might not inspire you to write a romantic suspense novel like I did, but I can guarantee you’ll never have a more relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.

While you’re on the SJR website, don’t forget to click on the Blog button, and check out Notes From the River. Please take a moment to read my introductory post (click on the Continue Reading button at the bottom to see the whole post). I hope you’ll leave a comment to let me know what you think, and that you’ll follow the blog, as well. (You can follow each post individually and/or use the RSS Feed button at the top of the page).

I’m really thrilled to have this chance to share a bit of Florida with all you good folks, so I’m looking forward to reading your comments, and answering questions on many of Florida’s  nature-related topics.

Please help us get this website and blog off to a  great start by sharing with the Immediate World. THANKS!

Can’t wait to see you there!

Start your new year off right! Spend two hours on the fabulous St. Johns River, surrounded by scenic beauty, fantastic birds and wildlife, and a bit of Florida history.  Join me on Saturday, January 14, for a fun afternoon tour, with a  brief pause midway for a reading from my latest book. When we return to the marina, I’ll be available to sign books for anyone interested.

(Sorry. You’ll Have to Settle for Just Me on the Tour.)

This is the tour that inspired my Riverbend series, and while we’ve had to say a sad goodbye to Captain Jeanne Bell (who will live forever in our hearts), Doug Little will share his extensive knowledge of the river’s wildlife and history with you. Doug is a first-rate photographer, and thus, was the inspiration for Gunnar Wolfe in Swamp Ghosts, a fact he will be sure to share with you.  😀

The tour leaves Highbanks Marina, in DeBary Florida, at 1:30PM, but be there earlier. Perhaps 1:00 to 1:15. You don’t want to get left behind.

For reservations, call 386-626-9004.

I hope you folks who are in the area will come along for a great afternoon. It’s a terrific, peaceful way to unwind, accompanied by lots of moments of high interest and/or excitement when something really cool is spotted. Large alligators, baby alligators, birds of all kinds, manatees, deer, and even black bears have been seen while cruising on the Naiad, so mark you calendars now!

(Barred Owl)

I’m up for one last eco-tour this Friday, until after the weather cools down a bit. Want to join us on the beautiful St. Johns River, for some wildlife viewing, bird watching, local history, and a brief reading from yours truly?  I’ll be doing more in the fall, I’m sure, but this will be my last one for this summer, I think.

These tours are the best two hours you can spend in central Florida, you know . . . even without MOI! 😀 The river is always beautiful and lush, and the wildlife can be amazing. Even this time of year, when many animals are hiding in the shade, you always see something wonderful. Plenty of birds, for sure. If you live in the area, join us Friday for a great time.  Call for reservations ( 386-626-9004), as the boat is almost full. Bring your cameras!

All Aboard the Naiad

I added a new photo to my Inspiration Board today. Nope, not a picture of anyone who inspires a particular character of mine, nor a scene that might lead to another story. Probably.  🙂

Instead, I added a photo of the wonderful group who joined me aboard the Naiad for a fantastic eco-tour of the St. John’s River, yesterday. This particular group was almost completely comprised of book lovers I’ve met at various events over the last six months, most of whom have read some, if not all, of my books. I asked myself today,  what could be more inspiring than these lovely people, who are already invested in my stories and characters ? Who else am I writing for if not these wonderful folks,  and others just like them?

So, voila! Here they are. Eighteen terrific folks–friends, now–who got to experience a St. Johns River Eco-Tour with Captain Jeanne Bell and Doug Little, and see some central Florida birds and wildlife. They were very attentive when I read the prologue from Harbinger, and I think at least some of them will be eagerly awaiting the latest book in the Wake-Robin Ridge series. Fingers crossed. I am blessed to call each of them a friend, now! And I am INSPIRED!

Deltona Authors’ Fair & Building A Local Readership #SundayBlogShare

delt1
Would You Buy a Used Car From This Person?
How About A Book?

I’ve posted my thoughts on building a local readership several times, but once in a while, it seems like a good idea to address it again, especially when I’ve been to an author event like yesterday’s Authors Fair at the Deltona Regional Library. I know it might not be something everyone enjoys as much as I do, but I really think attending local events where you can meet not only readers, but other writers, is a great way to promote your books, and most importantly, yourself.

I stress the importance of promoting yourself, because I have a theory that if readers meet you face to face, and enjoy chatting with you, they are very likely to buy a book or two that you’ve written. If not at the event, then later, for their Kindle, or whenever they are in the mood to go browsing at Amazon. (Of course, you must enjoy chatting with them, as well. They’ll know if you’re faking it.)

It’s not about the sales you make that day, which can be iffy. It’s about the ones that will be coming later, because of the interest generated from your table, and from your sparkling personality. You do have one of those, right?  *grin*  If not, work on it. But remember, everyone sparkles in a different way. Be yourself, be friendly, rather than pushy, and enjoy a laugh or two with those you chat with.

And the importance of meeting other writers, especially local ones, can’t be overstated, for several reasons. First, writers are truly the most  supportive and informative group of people, ever. They are almost always willing to share experience, resources, knowledge, and pretty much anything else connected to the business of writing and marketing books. And, they (mostly) seem to know that their fellow writers are not competition, but rather a cheering section. After all, buying a book isn’t like picking out a sofa. Readers don’t buy one, and then stop. In fact, when readers enjoy a good book, all it does is make them want to read another one, right away.  So, as with most businesses today, networking is a key factor. Author events offer you the opportunity to learn from, and share with, each other.

For instance, yesterday, I found out several very handy and interesting things about subjects as diverse as editing a book already published on CreateSpace, local book clubs, and even (believe it or not), the mask of King Tut! 🙂 And I also learned that my personal presentations and talks of the past year meant that a lot of folks who stopped by  my table had met me before, read at least one of my books, and were looking for more. My Secret Plan is working! My immediate sales were better than I expected, and  online purchases afterward went up, too.

After an event like yesterday, where there were forty authors present, or even after one of my (solo) PowerPoint presentations at local venues, I always see an uptick in sales on Amazon. Even those who don’t purchase a book from me the day of the event, often go home and check out my books online, where they can read the full blurb at their leisure, and see what others have to say, before buying. And this is fine with me. I’ll sell eBooks all day long, and smile with every download.

Finally, let me just (gently) urge you to get away from the computer now and then, so you can meet your readers (and other authors) face to face. You will learn a lot about what folks want from your books, and about how other writers approach the craft.  And best of all, it’s fun!

Of all the local Meet the Author events I do, none is more fun than an Eco-Tour aboard the Naiad, with a local book club or other group. An afternoon on the St. Johns River is a treat for everyone, and halfway through the two-hour tour, we stop long enough for me to do a reading, then continue the scenic cruise. Back at the marina, I sign books and do some Q&A, and we all go home tired and happy. I have two Eco-tours coming up soon. April 30 and May 27. Call Doug or Jeanne at (386) 626-9004 for reservations. Hope to see some of you there! 🙂

Now it’s your turn. How many of you actively pursue opportunities of this kind? What has worked for you, and what hasn’t? Inquiring minds wanna know!

Happy Saturn’s Day!

Photographer Doug Little, Me, and Captain Jeanne Bell on the Naiad

Hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend. Got a call from a local newspaper this week, requesting a telephone interview. What a surprise, and what fun, too. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Hope the interviewer (very nice gal) was able to understand my Southernese. 🙂 She wanted a picture of me with  wildlife photographer Doug Little & Captain Jeanne Bell of the Naiad, the Eco-Tour Boat that goes out of Highbanks Marina nearly every day. (These are the good folks who inspired the main characters in my book, Swamp Ghosts.) Any excuse to go visit my friends on their boat is a happy thing for me, so I met them around mid-day, and we had a few good laughs taking pictures, and catching up a bit. Just thought I’d share.

Now, what are YOU guys up to this weekend? Anything exciting? Or resting and relaxing? Share! Pics are always good, too. And what’s new with your writing? Got a WIP going? Getting ready to do a promo we should know about? Let us hear from you! And above all, enjoy the rest of your weekend. I know I’m going to!

My Fabulous Day Yesterday!

You folks who know me best, know I’m very seldom out of the house these days. In a frenzy to tell my stories while I still remember what words are, I mostly spend my days at the computer, writing or researching. But yesterday, they LET ME OUT! Woohooo! The wonderful Captain Jeanne Bell of the St. Johns River Eco  Tours and her wildlife  photographer husband,  Doug Little, invited me to go along on TWO of their tours. And what a great time it was!

The weather was sunny and beautiful. Okay, I was hot, since it was well over 80 degrees out, but you can’t go by me. I haven’t been cool since 1972, and I mean that in every sense of the word. But most people were very comfortable, and the blue skies and brilliant green spring foliage made the trip simply breathtaking. And we saw it ALL, folks. Lots and lots of alligators, from some no more than a foot long, to a few truly big, big boys, and every size in between. All the usual wading birds were out–white ibis galore, little blue herons, great egrets, snowy egrets and quite a few giant wood storks. We even spotted a purple gallinule on the morning tour. But the highlight of the trip for me was when Doug called up several barred owls who came when he whistled, and put on a show for us. It was spectacular, and something I’d not seen him do on any of my earlier trips.

522px-Hontoon_Dead_-_Barred_Owl

And of course, because they are so supportive and understand the benefits of networking to each other’s mutual benefit, Doug did his spiel about how he and Captain Jeanne were the inspiration for my book, Swamp Ghosts, and I had a chance to address each group and talk a bit about my book, and my experiences in tackling writing and self-publishing at my age, with no prior training in either. We had a drawing after each tour, and the winners got a copy of my first book, Wake-Robin Ridge, plus an assortment of my custom tea blends I’ve been making up and naming for characters in my books. I sold and signed some books, and all in all, consider the day to have been everything I hoped for, and more!

We’ve been chatting a bit about building local readerships, and I just wanted to share one way to make it work. Here are a few pictures of things we saw, though these weren’t taken yesterday. If I get any that were, I’ll pass them along. (I was too busy having fun to take pics myself.)
