Thank You All!

Thanks so much to everyone who took part in Excerpt Week. It was a lot of fun to see what everyone was working on, or what they’ve already published. I hope you got a lot of new exposure, and had a good time sharing! Remember, while the occasional Excerpt Week is a good way to draw in new folks, you are heartily encouraged to share excerpts of your work on this blog ANY time you wish. It’s always a treat, and always welcome!

Now…back to your writing, editing, publishing, marketing, submitting, and otherwise, creating good things. Whichever hat you’re wearing today, I hope the hours go by smoothly, and at the end of the day, you have that lovely sense of accomplishment that makes it all worthwhile.

Good News!

Hip_Hip_Hooray-hiphooray

For those like myself, who have been railing against some of the changes in format here on WordPress, you might be very happy to learn you do NOT (yet) have to switch to the “improved posting experience.” There is a quick and easy way around it that doesn’t involve trying to find things online that will let you code it differently. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to Sue Vincent who said in an earlier conversation that you can still find the “classic”  form for posting via the  Dashboard. All you do is Click on WP Admin in your drop down menu, which will bring up your Dashboard. Click on Post/Add New from THERE, instead of from that first menu, and you will get your old favorite format again! I’ve tried it like 100 times tonight, to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. If I click on Posts/Add New from the first drop down, I get the “new” and “totally screwed up” format. If I click on  WP Admin first, and then click on Post/Add New from that Dashboard menu, I get the old one! VOILA! Problem solved, for now at least, and I am one happy camper!

Thank you a million times over, Sue. I had been growing increasingly angry at that stupid new format. It reminds me of a poem I wrote a couple of years ago:

Things I Have Learned #1

TV ads we all endure
Proclaim loudly “We have the cure!”
You try it out, and find it’s good,
Why can’t they leave it as they should?
Beware the label “New and Improved,”
It really means you’ve just been scrooved.

Hey, Guys! Don’t Forget…

1. If you’ve shared (or are planning to share) an excerpt, don’t forget to add your BUY LINKS under your post, and a photo of your cover is good, too. (If you’ve already posted without, feel free to go in and edit to add those things).

2. Please, please share the excerpts posted this week. Tweet them, post them on your blogs or FB pages. Whatever. Just pass them along, if you would, and we will do the same for YOU, any time you share excerpts, news, promos, and the like. One of the main purposes of this blog is to share with each other, and everyone else in the Immediate World. 😀

Thanks so much, and guys…this is more like it. I’m thrilled to see you sharing. Remember, there’s no limit on how much or how often this week. Have at it, and hopefully, you’ll garner some new readers!

Carry on!!

We’re Waiting For You

Come on you guys…now’s your chance to share any excerpt you’d like from any book, collection, or WIP you wish. And as often as you wish. We’ll tweet it out there, and get some eyes on your words. If you don’t want to get real sick of reading MY stuff, you need to join in. 😀 Seriously, there are over 650 of you here. Surely someone has a chapter, or a page, or a paragraph they’d like to share? I did it.  Callum and Deborah did it. YOU can do it, too. Let your light shine!

I finally hired a Virtual Assistant, and she’s proving to be worth her weight in gold, already. (More on that later.) For starters, she’s set me up on Instagram and Google+. If any of you visit those sites, please stop by and Follow me. I’d be ever so grateful! 🙂 We’re trying to get it off the ground. Thanks so much!

Hey, You Guys!!

I’m a birdwatcher. I’m especially fond of birds with many, many legs!

I’m not learning new stuff about very many members. We are almost 600, now…surely a few of you have something you’d like to share with us that we might be surprised to learn…or get a laugh from? Come on. Just one thing we don’t know. Here. I’ll throw out something else: You already know I’m old, but did you know I’m tall? As tall as my husband, almost. Close to 6′. Okay, 5’10”, but who’s counting? And…look, three for one…I have a southern accent. (You expected anything else from a native Floridian?) So. THAT’S FOUR from me. I paint, I’m tall, I speak Southernese, and I love multiple-legged birds. It is definitely your turn now. I’m waaaaaait-iiiiing.

A Note on Excerpt Week

Hi, Folks!

I’m having a good time with Excerpt Week, though I wish more of you were playing. Come on, don’t be shy! We want to read…and SHARE…what you’ve written. A couple of points I need to make though:

1. If you area not a regular contributor to The Write Stuff, you can still share an excerpt from your books. Please email me at mmeara@cfl.rr.com and I’ll tell you how. It will work much better than trying to share in the comments section. I promise to post for you, or to tell you how to become a contributor so you can do it yourself.

2. I reserve the right (I’ve always wanted to say that) to insert the “Continue Reading” break into the middle of longer posts, though I probably won’t do it until the front page of the blog starts to fill up. This is just so that other posts don’t get lost. You won’t lose your readers, as they can click to see the rest of your excerpt or post. When it’s a slow day, this isn’t an issue, but as more posts come in, it helps keep things visible.

3. As you read and enjoy these exerpts, please, please remember to SHARE with all your friends. Reblog, post on Facebook, Tweet them out, email links to friends you think would be especially interested…whatever you want. But the main reason this blog exists is for writers to help writers, and that includes sharing far and wide to put writers in front of potential readers. We’ll all do the same for you, when you post.

And that’s it. Enjoy all the goodies our group has to offer! We are a widely diverse and interesting bunch, here. And take advantage of this chance to share your own work, whether published yet, or not. Let’s get your name out there!

As you were, people!

A Lesson in Uploading Changes to a Published eBook

lessons-learned-support

Been doing a bit of last minute editing before starting any kind of “official” launch or promotion of A Boy Named Rabbit, and had a real surprise last night. I made some changes, saved my newly revised document, converted it to HTML, and then uploaded it to Amazon. Well, lo and behold, the little spinning wheel that lets you know your file is being converted to Kindle format by Amazon wouldn’t stop spinning. It’s a process that I’ve seldom had take longer than 3 minutes or so, but after an hour, I gave up and went away for a while. When I came back again, it was still going. Obviously, there was a problem with the file, but I could find no way to stop the process. That big wheel kept on turnin’ and I was left doing my truly fine Tina Turner impression as I headed off to bed.

When I got up this morning, I found a message alerting me that there was something wrong with my file (ya think?) and it could not be converted. They advised me to try again. After about thirty minutes of checking various things in my Word document, I realized that in shuffling around some items at the back of the book (Author’s Notes, etc), I had failed to remove a Page Break at the end of the last page. And that, my friends, was enough to throw a monkey wrench into the whole process.

If this ever happens to me again, the first thing I’ll be looking at will be the very last page. If that’s not the issue, I’ll check the page breaks at the end of every chapter, and between the other sections of the book. And I’m sharing this with you today, so you won’t panic if it  ever happens to you. Kindle does NOT play well with blank pages. A word to the wise, and a lesson learned by me.

Just A Reminder

Please remember to share posts like Aimee Easterling’s latest two-parter. Reblog, post on Facebook, or Tweet, if you can. This information is SO worth sharing, and it will help build more traffic here on TWS, so more folks will see YOUR posts and promos, too.

Writers Helping Writers by sharing. Thanks!!
