Home Again, and All’s Well!

Surgery went great, and I’m home, comfy, and wide awake. That will no doubt change when the “block” on my foot wears off, and I have to take a pain pill. But for now, all’s well, and I’m testing out my Comfy Chair Office. Hope you are all having a great day. I’ll check in again later.

Carry on, Folks! 🙂

Dear bloggers,

I woke up this morning to find comments, reblogs, innumerable Tweets , retweets and shares of all kinds from my post about Nick’s participation in the triathlon and his Indiegogo campaign for the acquired brain injury charity he is supporting. It has continued all day.

I cannot tell you how valuable that support can be. It isn’t just about raising funds, but about raising awareness. It is also, for me at least, about Nick himself and showing him that after the last few years, just by making it to the start line of the race, he is already a winner.

In the twenty four hours since Nick launched his campaign, £500 has already been donated… and here’s the thing that had me in tears with my coffee… YOU have done this. YOU, the blogging community.

I look at the list of donations and the vast majority of them…

Have you tried a thunderclap?

20150727thunderclap

One of the new launch-publicity methods I’m trying out is a thunderclap campaign. If you’re like me and eschew social media whenever possible, a thunderclap can be a way to get that launch bang without maintaining a large twitter or facebook following. Or at least I hope that will turn out to be the case!

“What’s a thunderclap?” you might say. It’s a bit like a kickstarter, but with no money changing hands. Instead, people pledge to share your image, note, and link with their facebook, twitter, and/or tumblr audience on a specific day. You can spend up to 60 days accumulating supporters, and then all of the shares go off at once with a bang…or, rather, with a thunderclap.

The tricky part is getting all of those supporters lined up in the first place. Like kickstarter, there’s a minimum (100 supporters in this case) or nothing will happen at all. So you need to hustle a bit to get all of your ducks in a row. I’ve asked my facebook friends for their help and will beg for support from my email list the next time a newsletter goes out, but I’m getting most of my supporters by joining this facebook group where you can trade support for each others’ campaigns. To keep your request in the public eye, be sure to thank each supporter and to acknowledge as you support them in return. The return comment is just polite…and it also pushes your post back to the top of the group feed so others will notice your campaign.

Embrace the Adventure

The other important factor in your thunderclap, of course, is to make the tweet/post you eventually send out as enticing as possible. Being a twitter neophyte, I studied up on hashtags a bit and worked up the best image I could come up with for the project. Here’s hoping the effort will pay off!

If you’d like to support my thunderclap campaign, you can do so here. And I’ll do my best to remember to report back in three weeks when all of the shares come rolling in. I’m curious to see how a thunderclap compares to a paid promotion!

AWOL…and More of the Same Coming.

So sorry to have been missing in action these last two weeks or so, but I’ve been working like a thing possessed to get caught up and ready for my impending foot surgery (this Friday). Sadly, I will be undergoing a long recuperation afterward, which might limit my time online, too. They are doing bone surgery and putting in a steel pin, and I won’t be able to put any weight at all on that foot for several weeks. I’ll spend the first two stuck in the Comfy Chair (or bed) with it elevated and iced, so can’t sit at the computer at all. Then I’ll gradually be able to use a wheelchair and slowly transition to crutches or a walker. But I’ll pretty much be stuck at home for the next six weeks, and it will take a full three months or so for it to heal completely.

The good news is, if all goes well, once it is healed, I will be able to walk without pain for the first time in several years. YAY! (I had this done to my other foot seven years ago, and knew this day was coming.) I have bought a tablet, and set up working space around the Comfy Chair, where I can sit with my foot elevated in front of me, and hopefully, keep up with my blogs, and do a bit of work on the last edits of Finding Hunter. Plus, I’m hoping I’ll have time to catch up on my reading, too. After a couple of weeks, I’ll be able to sit at the computer in the wheelchair for short periods, IF my foot doesn’t swell too much in that position.

I will definitely be able to keep in touch via email, and will do my best to post here somewhat regularly, too. I need to wrap up Finding Hunter, in time for a September release, and get started on Harbinger (Book 3 of the  Wake-Robin Ridge series), aiming for a spring release. So…no rest for the weary…or the foot-impaired, as the case may be.

You guys keep on keepin’ on, and please remember to tweet and share everyone’s news while I’m gone. (I’m guessing I’ll be pretty much out of things this weekend, what with all the good drugs and all. But I should be back in a limited way by Monday, at least.)

As you were, folks! See you soon!!

The Legender — free today and tomorrow

Just wanted to let everyone know that my ebook The Legender will be free to download today (7/27/2015) and tomorrow (7/28/2015). Connect to The Legender on Amazon by clicking here.

Here’s a quick description of the book…

“The pacing is brisk…the action is fun” – Publishers Weekly
“At last, a great fantasy novel!” – Vine Reiwer
“A brilliantly conceived page-turner that intelligently reveals the story” – Amazon Reviewer
“A celebration of those who are faithful at great personal cost” – Amazon Reviewer
“Fantasy at its best!” –Amazon Reviewer

Arkos, a reclusive artisan, bides the long age of peace carving animal bones and remembering his days of adventure. In the ancient city of Tierrion where he dwells, no one suspects he is one of the legenders—those forces of nature clad in human form who spoke with the elements and shaped them into mighty beasts. After the legenders fought in the bygone war against the Living Shadow, they faded into myth and have remained in historical obscurity. That is, until a great evil strikes Tierrion and Arkos saves the city with his power over the elements. This grand revelation of his true identity comes at a cost, however, for there are kings and politicians who would use a legender for their own purposes. Bound by an oath of service, Arkos must obey their commands—dire consequences descend upon legenders unfaithful to their vows.

Fearful that Tierrion’s catastrophe portends war, the kingdoms order Arkos to the uncharted wastelands of the north to discover if the Living Shadow and his legions are preparing to mount an attack once again. Arkos’ journey takes him over perilous mountains and through hostile terrain where he must use his elemental abilities to overcome dangers fatal to man. As he travels onward, a sinister and mysterious figure watches from afar, awaiting his dreadful schemes to unfold. When Arkos reaches the dark unknown and finds secrets lost in history, an unexpected choice confronts him: to take his long-awaited freedom or save the kingdoms that would enslave him.

A thoughtful page-turner, The Legender draws the audience into a fantastical new world of rich characters. Beyond the excitement invoked by adventure and political intrigue, the story at its core resounds with identities redeemed and courage found, arguing that there is more to us than we ourselves would believe.

New review of Die Laughing from Book ’em Danno!

I particularly like this review because it was concise and at the same time insightful. Patrick Murtha runs the Book ’em Danno! Die Laughing_147 KBreview site. He touched on nuances and subtleties in the novel that others hadn’t. He also did a terrific analysis of my approach to the characters. I can’t ask for more than that from a reviewer. Book ’em Danno! review site

What do you look for from a reviewer? (As opposed to a reader who leaves a review – in my mind they’re two different groups, or am I wrong on that?)

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

Fantastic new series. Rachel Caine has outdone herself.

My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

If you are looking for the type of review that goes into great detail about plot and characters, you may as well quit reading right now. I don’t do an awful lot of that anyway, and I’m darn well not going to give away a single thing about this book, except this: it’s bloody wonderful! Finished it over breakfast today, crying on my poached eggs, and any book that brings me to tears like that is a 5-star book in my mind. It means that it engaged me so completely that the characters and the world became real, and I was fully invested in each.

I’ve been a fan of Rachel Caine for a long time. Her Weather Warden series and its Outcast Season spin-off were terrific fun. I even enjoyed every single book in her YA Morganville Vampire series. But she has soared to new heights…

Stern
Someday
by Caitlin Wynne Stern

My mother carried my name
years before
she carried me
Read it, and it took root
a bud
promising
to blossom someday
Then someday transformed to soon
months layering
growing
increasing
Surrounded by hills ribboned with brick sidewalks
almost-pizza topped by hardboiled eggs
new glass buildings mixing
with old stone edifices pocked with bullet holes
and the occasional Red Brigade bombing
my mother hunted
for a second name
Finally, she joined a single
syllable to
that first bud
so when I joined the world
bloomed from possible into messily real
with the standard ten fingers, ten toes
two eyes, and one nose
I had four names
instead of the usual three
A solid rectangle to build
a future on
