Happy Thanksgiving!
Going to have Thanksgiving dinner with my friend (and cover designer) Nicki and her family tomorrow. In case I don’t get a chance before we head out, I wanted to wish every one of you a wonderful Thanksgiving. May you be surrounded by those you love, and may you remember to tell them so! May you be grateful for all the good things that have come into your life this year, and forget about the bad ones. And may you and your family be blessed through the holidays and all the way through 2017, too.

9 Ways to Find What You’re Looking For on Google

I’ve been using Google since the early 90s, when it was first conceived, and have been using it daily since. And yet, even I didn’t know some the shortcuts found below, brought to us by brightside.me.
1. Either this or that
Sometimes we’re not sure of, whether we’re looking for, say, a picture of Jennifer Anniston or Jennifer Lawrence. To overcome this common problem, simply put in both names, separating them with the word ”or” (or the pipe symbol “|” ).
2. Searching using synonyms
How many times do you have the word you’re looking for at the tip of your tongue, but can’t for the life of you remember it? To overcome this, just add the “~” symbol to your search. For example, if you search for the term “healthy ~food” you’ll get results about the principles of healthy eating, cooking recipes, as well as healthy dining options.
3. Searching within websites

I love that it mentions Sir Terry Pratchett, a special favorite of mine, and Little Free Libraries, which I WISH were a “thing” in my area. Maybe I’ll have to be first! In anticipation of my normal weekly schedule resumption (Sunday, I suspect), I thought I’d share an autumn/Indian summer themed poem. Might be the last chance before all our thoughts turn toward Christmas and wintery themes. This is one from my book, Summer Magic, and I hope I managed to capture some imagery you enjoy.
Indian Summer by Marcia Meara
He sees her standing
Below the falls,
Carefully balanced
On the slippery rocks,
And laughing
In the hazy October sun.
Only yesterday
The ice-rimmed pool
Mirrored angry gray clouds,
And a wind out of the north
Chilled his bones.
Today, a warm yellow sun
Has eaten the frost,
And resurrected the ghost
Of a summer already laid to rest.
She’s wearing shorts,
As if she knew
There would be a reprieve
And dressed accordingly.
Dampened hems, and a
Misty sheen on
Her long, slim legs
Bear testament to
The wind-blown spray.
Her loosened hair is a
Sable cloud swirling
Around her face,
Smelling faintly
Of August nights
And tupelo honey.
She turns toward him,
Radiant and joyful,
Filled with a wonder
Most have long lost.
Her smile invites him
To let go of autumn
To share the sunshine,
To be reborn in this moment.
Surprised, his mouth
Curves in response, and
His soul cries,
Yes, oh yes!
Desperation gives voice
To need long ignored.
Yes, he thinks again,
Walking toward her.
I want the sunlight,
The warmth, the wonder.
Show me, teach me.
He takes her hand, and
Lets the sunlight
Flood his heart,
Thawing the frost within,
Setting him free.

Embedding Your Fonts for Paperback Books

There are lots of fabulous fonts around these days for us to use in our paperback books, and I think that making them visually attractive as well as wonderful to read is a great idea. Using a plain font for most of the body text is best, but there is no reason not to create great looking chapter headings, or using old typewriter fonts to make letters or notes stand out in your stories. Some fonts are made by hobbyists and offered online free for use commercially so it’s always necessary to check that they are embedded in your manuscript when you load it up to CreateSpace or any other POD system.

I’m Back. Mostly.
Finally Getting to Meet Jackie, One of My WONDERFUL Beta Readers!
Hi, Everyone! Just wanted to touch base with you good folks to let you know I have not abandoned you. Lately, Life has just been a bit . . . errrmmm . . . challenging, shall we say. The past six weeks or so started with a car accident, and concluded (I hope) with the passing of my mother, who had been ill a long time, and heavily sedated toward the end. I’m glad she is far beyond that now, in a better place, but it was still very sad, as I’m sure you can imagine, and posting on my blogs was just beyond me for a while.
So, without going into further detail, let’s just say I’m hopeful (insistent, really!) that November and December will be filled with positive, happy events. I’m going to do my part to see that they are. And to get the ball rolling, the smiles and laughter began in earnest on Saturday, at the Meet the Author Tea at DeBary Hall. What a great time I had, and I think everyone else did, as well. This was one of the best groups I’ve had the pleasure to visit with, and I can’t tell you how much their comments, questions, support, and encouragement did to inspire me. It was just what I needed.
I came home ready to plunge right back into my story, to finish That Darkest Place, the third Riverbend book. Yeah, I know the title doesn’t sound very cheery, but those who’ve read my books know that I often put my characters into some dreadful situations, just to let them discover how much strength and courage they have within. I won’t leave anyone actually IN that darkest place–unless, of course, they’ve earned it. I promise. 🙂
I need to spend a day or two catching up with my writing, and then another day or two catching up with my blogs, before it’s business as usual, here. I’ve had to unsub from many of your blogs, since I’m in the process of scrapping my old email address. Don’t worry if yours was one of the ones I’ve left. I’ll be RE-subbing under my NEW email address as soon as possible. Can’t wait to find out what you’ve all been up to during my absence. (And if you didn’t notice I was gone, all the better. Pay no attention to that woman behind the curtain. Just carry on as usual! 😀 )
