Excerpt/Teaser Week Is Here!

snakereading

You are all hereby invited to share short teasers or full-on excerpts from any or all of your books or WIP’s all week, here on The Write Stuff. This is your chance to give everyone a taste of what your writing is like, and what your books are about. Feel free to share as often as you like throughout the week. I promise to tweet and share everywhere I can, and to encourage all members to do the same.

If you share a longer excerpt, please use the “More” button to break it up after 2 or 3 paragraphs, so it doesn’t fill up the whole front page. If you don’t know how to do that, I can do it for you. That way, we can have more authors visible on our Home Page. And if you aren’t already a contributor, able to post your own new thread, just email me for help. I’ll either make you one, or I’ll post for you. It’s all good. The only thing that matters is getting your words in front of as many people as possible, and thus convincing them they can’t possibly get through this summer without buying your book. 😀

So, join in and share a scene, or teaser, or whole chapter, if you like. I can’t wait to see your work. I’m going to start us off shortly, and then I expect to see lots of good stuff coming through here. 😉

And Now For Something Completely Different: A Scavenger Hunt

This Has Nothing Whatsoever to Do With This Post, But It Made Me Laugh, So I Figured I’d Share.

Looking for a fun way to drive more traffic to your FB page or put your book in front of a few more readers, maybe get a couple more reviews? Veronica Williams is having a Scavenger Hunt, and it sounds like a lot of fun, plus a chance to win some cool prizes. Check out her Event Page below and see what you think. I don’t know about you guys, but when something falls into my lap out of the blue, I tend to think it’s probably something I should pursue. So, I’ll be joining in the hunt. Who knows, I might win a great prize!

You should play along on the hunt and see what you might win. Have fun!

Still Cold Where You Are?

Belinda’s Dream Rose and Black Gamecock Iris

Well, believe me, it sure isn’t here! It hit 90 today, and the sun was just broiling down on me. I had to stop my yard work much earlier than I planned and come inside to the a/c. If you doubt it’s already full summer here, take a look at these two pics I took earlier. My roses are blooming like mad, and things like cigar plant (cuphea) and Amistad salvia are running amok. Luckily, I know the roses and cuphea will continue straight through the summer heat. Will find out how Amistad does as it continues to get hotter. I love the dark purple, so I hope it won’t burn up. It’s already way too hot for petunias, violas, nasturtiums, and other plants we grow here in the winter. Florida. The rules are different here. 🙂

and Amistad Salvia to the right. The hummingbirds love the cigar plant,
and I’m told they will love the salvia, too.

I finally hired a Virtual Assistant, and she’s proving to be worth her weight in gold, already. (More on that later.) For starters, she’s set me up on Instagram and Google+. If any of you visit those sites, please stop by and Follow me. I’d be ever so grateful! 🙂 We’re trying to get it off the ground. Thanks so much!

If any of you guys are going to be in central Florida on Saturday, April 25, or Tuesday, April 28, maybe you might have time to come for a fun trip on the St. Johns River. Captain Jeanne Bell and her photographer husband, Doug Little, have invited me to do a Meet the  Author tour with them, at 1:30 both days. Here’s the way the press release reads:

“Best selling Amazon author, Marcia Meara, will be conducting a Meet the Author talk onboard the Naiad, her inspiration for the Undine, in her novel Swamp Ghosts. Accompanying her for a tour of the scenic St. Johns River will be Captain Jeanne Bell, a/k/a/ Maggie Devlin, in Swamp Ghosts.

At 1:30 PM on Saturday April 25, and again on Tuesday April 28, the Naiad will leave from Highbanks Marina, located at 488 W. Highbanks Road, DeBary, FL.  We will retrace the tour that inspired the author to write Swamp Ghosts, accompanied by the individuals who are characterized in the book. Enjoy a beautiful, nature-filled afternoon aboard the Naiad, and find out how it all came about.

After the tour, Marcia will be available to autograph copies of her books. Sign up for her monthly newsletter, and you’ll receive a free download of Summer Magic: Poems of Life & Love.

Don’t miss out on a relaxing, fun-filled afternoon on the river. For reservations, call St. Johns River Eco Tours at 386-626-9004.”

I’m really looking forward to this. I’ll be doing a reading at the beginning of the tour, and another at the end, and then just chatting with everyone about the book, and some of the things featured in the story, like the difference between albino and leucistic reptiles–or whatever the good passengers want to talk about. Plus, we’ll be stopping to view alligators and birds, and any other interesting wildlife along the way.

Of course, I know most of you probably can’t do this, even if you’d like to, but I wanted to share, and I hope you’ll pass the info along to your followers everywhere, in case some of them can. And even if you can’t come along on this particular tour, believe me, the regular narrated trip is fantastic, and well worth the price of the tickets.

You can book tours any time here: St. Johns River Eco Tours Click on Book Now. Scroll down to the Swamp Ghost tours (in red) to book one of mine, or stop on any other day that fits your schedule to book a “normal” tour.

Getting to Know You Week!

dexterforprinting2

I realize Monday is almost over, but my day was derailed by a few unexpected tasks. Sorry, but I’ll try to make up for it now. Let’s get to know each other a little bit better. Many of us only know the other TWS members by their books…not that it isn’t wonderful to know about each other’s writing…but I think it would be fun to learn a bit more about what makes us each unique. So, through this week, I’d love to see you guys post something about yourself that most of the group probably doesn’t know. It can be little or big, personal or career-oriented, whatever you’d like to share that you think would be interesting, or even surprising. You contributors can just go right ahead and post, and if you want to share, but aren’t a contributor yet, just let me know. I can set you up to do it directly, or I can post for you, whichever you’d prefer.

I’ll start. Most of you may not know that I’m a painter. I started dabbling in oils as a teenager, and continued painting off and on over the years. Eventually, I taught acrylics to beginning painters for a large franchise with several stores in our area. Then, I got interested in digital art. I discovered the joys of painting pictures with a Wacom tablet and electronic pen, and for several years, earned my keep painting custom pet portraits. I’m not a trained artist, nor have I ever done Fine Art. But tole and decorative painting, acrylics on canvas, and digital painting made up my creative life for a long time. Here are a couple of pictures of some of my digital pet portraits just for fun.

This is a hugely reduced jpg of an Arabian I did several years ago. The finished painting prints out in fade-resistant ink on heavy watercolor paper. I also made greeting cards and other smaller items from all of my paintings.

This is a portrait of a pit bull named Ginger, done as a memorial after she had passed on. The owner assures me they had nothing to do with her ears being cropped so badly, but they were glad I painted them exactly as they were. The actual painting is about 5 times the size of this.

Close up of nose and eye detail, so you can see how it looked as I was working on it. This isn’t photo manipulation, btw, but stroke by stroke “painting” just as I would have done with wet paints.

There. Now you know something about me most of you probably didn’t know before. Your turn. Do you have an interesting avocation or hobby? Were you once an entertainer? Have you traveled to somewhere wild and exotic we’d all be envious of? Can your wiggle your ears? Hold your breath a very long time? Whatever. Inquiring minds wanna know! Let us hear from you.  Oh, and the Dalmation at the top was my daughter’s dog, Dexter, who lived to be nearly 15, which I’m told is ancient for a Dal.

Took a Break, and Made Another

I haven’t done any graphics work at all in so long, even the most basic made me stop and think. Probably a sign I should get back to doing a bit more of it, before I forget how to work the program. Enjoy. And feel free to share this one, too, thanks. (Post one of yours, and I’ll pass it on, too.)

Just Sharing With You Guys, and Hoping You’ll Retweet!

Starting a new series of memes and graphics, because…FUN! 🙂 Please feel free to share anywhere you wish. This is a quote from my latest book, A Boy Named Rabbit. Find it on amazon HERE. Thanks!

Thank You All!

You guys are the BEST! In response to Excerpt Week, we had over 30 excerpts shared here on TWS! I call that an unqualified success, and believe me, we’ll be doing this again. Maybe quarterly or so. But between now and the next “official” Excerpt Week, please know that you can share excerpts with us at any time you wish, particularly in conjunction with promos or blog tours, etc. Don’t be shy! This blog is meant to be a place where we can learn from each other, AND share our good news, our works in progress, and selections from our books already “out there.” Anything we can do here to promote writing and writers is ALL GOOD!

Now, have a great week, everyone! You’ve earned it!
