Happy Wodin’s Day, Folks! Time for another Ten Things post, and this one features a first time guest on The Write Stuff, author Yvette Calleiro.  I hope you’ve been enjoying this series as much as I have been, and I’m absolutely sure this will be another post you’ll love! Take it away, Yvette!

Ten Things You May Not Know About Me

  1. I am an Army brat. I was born in Germany and have lived in five U.S. states and two other countries. I’ve settled in Miami, Florida, but I do my best to escape during the summer months to explore our great country.
  2. I am an empath with a strong sixth sense and a loud inner voice.
  3. I have a goal to see all 50 states in the USA before my son graduates from high school. After this summer’s road trip, we will only have three states to go!
  4. I was named after the actress, Yvette Mimieux. Although my parents are both Cuban Americans, my mother chose the French spelling of Yvette. I’ve spent most of my life having to spell out my name because the majority of people around me want to spell it with an I (Ivette).
  5. I am an intensive reading teacher at a middle school. My first twenty years were spent teaching reading at a high school. I’ve been teaching the middle grades for five years now, and I love it.
  6. I love being surrounded by nature. My sanctuary is the beach, with the forest being a close second. I enjoy camping, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, and bike riding, so long as I’m out in Mother Earth’s element.
  7. I am highly allergic to mosquito bites, and I’m a mega-magnet for them. Of course, this does not mesh well with my love for nature. My favorite bite repellants are coconut oil and a lemon-eucalyptus blend that I found.
  8. I am a firm believer in holistic wellness. I use homeopathy and kinesiology to keep my body healthy and balanced. I do my best to eat organic (or at least, non-GMO). I also enjoy EFT (emotional frequency tapping) to calm my nervous system.
  9. Music tends to be background noise for me. As a child, I could sing along to everything on the radio and would collect records and tapes and listen to them all day long. As an adult, I only listen to music in the car. I prefer silence over sound.
  10. The two books that got me hooked forever on reading were The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien and My Sweet Audrina by VC Andrews. The Hobbit opened up the world of fantasy for me, and I’ve never left. My Sweet Audrina fascinated me with the depth of character development, and I continue to crave more about the human psyche.

Author Yvette Calleiro

Yvette M. Calleiro is a heavily addicted reader of both young adult and adult novels.  She spends most of her time pseudo-living in paranormal worlds with her fictional friends (and boyfriends). She’s also been known to ride the stationary bike at her gym for hours while reading anything from paranormal to fantasy to suspenseful thrillers.

When she’s living amongst real people, Yvette M. Calleiro is a middle school Reading and Language Arts teacher. She’s been sharing her love of literature with her students for over twenty years. Besides writing about the various characters that whisper (and sometimes scream) in her head, she enjoys traveling, watching movies, spending quality time with family and friends, and enjoying the beauty of the ocean.

Yvette lives in Miami, Florida, with her beautiful son who allows enjoys paranormal and adventurous stories. She also shares her space with an assortment of crazy saltwater animals in her 300-gallon tank.

    • Right now, I have only two tiny fish, a blue starfish, and various snails and crabs. Lol! I got a bad batch of salt water with one of my cleanings that killed my fish, including my eel. 😢 So, I’ve been focused on adding more coral. I should be adding more fish (and an eel or two) soon. 😊

  3. I read somewhere that mosquitoes are attracted to certain blood types more than others, but my kids and I have the same blood types, and I seldom get bitten, while my kids are usually feasted on. Wish I had a solution (for all of you).

  5. Nice to meet you, Yvette. I’ve never seen it spelled with an I before, always a Y. So I find it weird you get it confused on you so often. But I do understand. I often have to spell mine out for people, or I’ll get it spelled Jeane, Genie, Gene, or Jeannie. Some people have trouble pronouncing it, too.

    I love being out in nature, too. I love being in the woods, and find being near water rejuvenating. Then again, I am a Taurus, which is an Earth sign.

  8. Yvette, thank you so much for taking part in my Ten Things series. I LOVE your list, and as you can see from the comments coming in, others do, too. I’m sorry that I’m going to be away from my computer most if not all of today, so I won’t be able to respond to comments along with you, but I will read and like as I can. And as a fellow Piscean, I fully understand your love of water, though I prefer our Florida rivers to the beaches. (Largely because I have to avoid the sun, and the rivers are, for the most part, beautifully shady.)

    I will try to check in throughout the day, but with all the lovely comments coming in, you’ll be plenty busy, with or without me. 😃

    • I appreciate you creating this series and allowing me to participate, Marcia. I love the Florida rivers as well. My sister and I love to take the kids up north in the summer to go kayaking, paddle boarding and tubing on the rivers. 🙂

  9. I loved getting to know more about Yvette. We have some commonalities with meditation techniques and EFT, although I haven’t actively practiced EFT in a while. I also was a huge fan of V.C. Andrews and devoured her books. I am disheartened that they continued to publish new books under name after her death and they are not the same. Thank you, Marcia, for spotlighting this fabulous author today!! Congrats, Yvette!

    • Jan, that was a BIG disappointment for me as well. I read the first few after her death (the ones that were her unfinished works), and even those did not have the same feel as the originals. Then, they just became repetitive. I still have all my original paperbacks. I loved those stories. The first one I ever read was My Sweet Audrina. I found it so twisted that I was hooked. I then devoured every other series. Lol! Thanks for sharing that with me, Jan. You took me down memory lane. 🙂

  11. Another great 10 things that fix an author more clearly in my mind. I do keep coming back to that 300 gallon tank. My daughter-in-law has what I’d call a very large tank in her house and I know it takes ages for her to do a change of water and clean it – I’m also sure that its capacity is nowhere near 300 gallons!
    I think that her work in school is one of the most important in the world. Thanks, Marcia ❤

  12. Great list and learning even more about you, Yvette! I’m a mosquito magnet too but only get slighly itchy. It does ruin those nature moments sometimes. I would love to see all 50 states too. Only three to go? Wow! Like you I believe in holistic healing too. I wonder how many writers are empaths? Thanks for doing these lists, Marcia!

    • I am a huge empath. I’m learning how to fortify my own energy without allowing the energies of others to drain me. The three that I’m missing with my son are Hawaii, Arizona, and Vermont. The only one I haven’t been to is Vermont. Somehow, we missed that lot of land on our New England road trip. But that’s okay! I hope to take him next year during the changing of the leaves since he’s never seen that as a Florida native. Thanks for stopping by, Denise. 🙂

  15. I loved learning more about you, Yvette. I am also an empath, and while I’m not allergic to mosquito bites they cause me more grief than most people. And when I step outside it’s like ringing the dinner bell. My sister is the same way.

    I can’t believe you only have three states to go to have visited all 50. That’s amazing!

    • Yes, not only do mosquitoes love my blood, the bites swell up and stay with me for days, sometimes even more than a week. Unfortunately, I passed that trait (assuming it’s a trait) down to my son. 😥 I love road trips, so every summer, my parents, my son, and I pick a few states and take off in my dad’s Honda Ridgeline. Most of our road trips last between 25-35 days. We spend months planning it to make sure we are seeing a little bit of everything that each of us wants to see. We are all nature lovers, so there are always national parks and waterfalls in the mix. 🙂
