As promised, #FirstLineFriday is back! We’ll have to see how it goes, but I’m aiming for every other week, and hope you guys will enjoy these little challenges that teach us so much about how to use opening lines effectively. This week, I’ve chosen one that I think will be fairly easy, but we’ll see if that turns out to be true or not.
As always, the rules are simple:
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at 4:00pm, with the title and author of the correct book.
- Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
- Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
- Submissions end at 4:00 P.M. EST, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
- Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any one of my books for themselves, or for someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of the offered books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
- Winners who live elsewhere may request a mobi or PDF file of the same books, since, sadly, Amazon won’t let me gift you from the site.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Put on your thinking caps, because here is today’s opening line:
“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
Remember, email answers only, please. Thanks! And now off I go to await your guesses.

Pfft, that puts me out this week 🙂 Sounds like a Harry Potteresque story though…

Bill, you were supposed to email the reply so that the rest of us don’t see it. That way, it wouldn’t spoil the competition.

I’ve put up another quiz, Harmony. I think Bill just got exited and forgot to email. Give it another go. I’ll bet you know this one. 🙂

Yes, please respond by email with the answer. Now others will know.

I just put up a second quiz, Joan. We’ll make this work one way or another. And Bill has played before. I think he just forgot for a moment. 🙂

I’m sorry, Bill, but by answering here, you’ve kinda stopped the quiz. Now everyone knows. I’m glad it was familiar to you, and hope you’ll play again, but as stated in the post above, I need you to email the answer to me so you don’t give it away to everyone else.
Thanks.

Bill, Bill, Bill . . . well, Tidalscribe sent in the answer it looks like. Good pick, Marcia!

Yep, Tidalscribe wins this one, but I just uploaded a second quiz, Priscilla, and I bet you’ll know the answer to it. (I think Bill was just eager to play, and forgot the rules for a moment.)

Have put up a second quiz, Jeanne. Give that one a try! 🙂 Poor Bill is probably hiding under the bed now. 😯 I think he just got carried away and forgot. 🙂

I didn’t see Bill’s comment, but I didn’t know it anyway. Then I looked it up. Duh.

Well, this one has been stopped, Teri, but I just put up a new one, so you still have a chance to win. Hope you’ll check it out! 🙂 Hint: it’s pretty easy. 😀
