Attention Dresdenphiles, Everywhere! Only 7 More Weeks Until #PeaceTalks Arrives!

Happy Tewe’s Day, Everybody! Guess what? We’re another week closer to the release of the long-awaited and greatly anticipated Peace Talks, Book 16 of the Dresden Files series! Yep, only seven more weeks to go, and my doesn’t the time just fly by? Yeah. Like a kid waiting for Christmas morning! Tick …….. tock.   Tick …….. tock. You get the idea. BUT, we are closer, so for that I’m going to be grateful. And I’m going to share some things with you that interested me. Hope you’ll enjoy them, too.

First, I thought maybe it would be appropriate to talk about the man who created Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Wizard Extraordinaire. That would be Jim Butcher, of course. I will admit that over the last six years, I’ve given serious thought to tracking Jim Butcher down and smacking him with a pizza so old and stale, even Toot-Toot the fairy wouldn’t touch it. However, I am too much in awe of his prodigious writing talent to do such a thing. Instead, I gnashed my teeth and bit my nails in silence, waiting, waiting, waiting for the day he would send forth the 16th installment of my favorite series of all time.  And finally, that day is drawing near!

INTERESTING STUFF

Butcher wrote the first book in The Dresden Files—about a professional wizard, named Harry Dresden, in modern-day Chicago—as an exercise for a writing course in 1996 at the age of 25. Storm Front, the first novel in The Dresden Files, was picked up by Roc/Penguin Books for publishing. It was released as a paperback in April  2000. Fool Moon followed nine months later on January 1, 2001, and the third book, Grave Peril, was published in September 2001. Thereafter, the release schedule slowed, with Summer Knight appearing on September 3, 2002. The fifth and sixth books, Death Masks and Blood Rites, appeared in August 2003 and 2004, respectively.  

For several years, you could pretty much count on a new Dresden Files book every year or so, until Skin Game (#15) was released in 2014. Then the drought began. Yes, I know there were graphic novels being written, and short stories (most of which are absolutely fantastic) appearing in various anthologies, and loads of other things going on in his life. (He is also the author of the Codex Alera series, a fantasy I quite enjoyed, and The Aeronaut’s Windlass, Book 1 of a new fantasy series that I hope will be continued.)

And those are all great things. BUT.  Harry disappeared for a very long time. I thought perhaps–unbeknownst to his fans–my favorite wizard had been yanked into the Nevernever and left there to wander lost and lonely as a cloud until the end of days! Happily, as we now know, he’s back! Thus my series of posts wherein the countdown of the weeks continues and I dance around all excited, while generally acting like a looney tunes.

    • Yes! You are officially a Dresdenphile! Welcome to the … umm … pack? No, that would be Billy and gang. Fold? No, that sounds more like Michael Carpenter. I guess I’ll settle for club, though it has a weaponry ring to it. 😉 At any rate, I’m absolutely tickled pink that you’ve become a fan, my friend! And you are in for a wonderful ride! (Possibly atop a dinosaur!) I finished re-reading Book 3, started Book 4, then jumped ahead to Book 5 so I could read along with Mae, as I promised her. But I’m bouncing between 4 and 5 until I’m officially caught up with her.

      You know, since I read each of these books as they came out, it has been 20 years since I started the series, and even books 4 and 5 are more than 15 years old. I discovered I’ve forgotten much of the details about the individual plots, though the overall arc will never go away, along with the regular characters. They are treasures! Re-reading these is even more fun than the first time.

    • Hi, Priscilla! I’m happy to hear these posts make you chuckle. Making folks chuckle has been one of my lifelong pursuits, as far back as I can remember. Laughter is the saving grace that keeps us sane. Of course, it’s best when it contains elements of truth we can all recognize, but I’ll take the cheap laughs, too. 😀

      And it’s great to know you look forward to these posts. I’m having a lot of fun with them, myself. 🙂 Now, when you tell me you are busily reading the series so you’ll be ready to go when Peace Talks comes out, I’ll know my work here is done! 😀

(In case you hadn’t guessed.) And do you mean the art movement? I’ve never thought about that before. Hmmmm…..

        • Hahahahahaha. I was truly confused, but don’t feel bad. I spend half my life that way! Now that I fully understand (*head smack*) I agree. I’d hire him myself, if I could! Harry would try to defend the devil himself against the Dark Arts! 😀

  5. Yay! So I love these posts and look forward to them, especially now that I am immersed in Harry’s world again. I didn’t get any reading time last night, but hopefully tonight. I’m only a short way into book 6 but loving it!

    • So glad you are loving it, Mae. I would have felt bad for urging you to read it, otherwise. Now I feel great! And I’m well into 5 (having left the rest of 4 for another time). I had totally forgotten about The Archive! Oh, how I love Ivy! And even Kincaid. This is a fun one, though I’m nervous for Harry and his duel with Ortega. (Yeah, I know he lives to star in another book, but while I’m reading, there’s still a risk he could be killed! It feels that real to me.)

      I’m happy you are enjoying the countdown, too. Will catch up to you somewhere along the way in Book 6, I hope. In the meantime, Shiro and Sanya are here, Adorable Ivy has arrived, at least for a bit, Charity is still being a jerk about Harry–downright mean, if you ask me, though I understand her viewpoint–and things are getting more and more complicated. I LOVE IT!

      • OOh, Kincaid is a great character, too. I hope he’s going to be back in future books. And I agree with you about Charity, but I seem to recall she was never a fan of Harry. Hmph! The nerve! 🙂

        • Nope, Charity has ever been unkind to Harry, as I recall, and even though I get why she hates him coming around, she always seems to make it personal, and I do NOT forgive her for it. The poor man is tormented all the time anyway, and carries enough guilt on his shoulders without her adding to it. Thankfully, Michael does what he believes to be right, even when he pays for it when he returns home. He doesn’t deserve that, either. She needs to accept that’s who she’s married to, and he will never shirk what he feels is his duty.

          The nerve, indeed! 😀 Happy reading to you, as well. I’m almost done with 6, and can’t wait to start 7.

        • He seems to be surrounded by fans and cosplay events and what have you all the time. I doubt he’d be impressed by my countdown posts. But I don’t care. I will always be grateful to him for this series. Re-reading it is making me laugh a lot every single day, and for the last few weeks, laughs have been few and far between. Still … you may be onto something. 😀 *goes off, pondering what an email like that would sound like*
