It’s getting closer, folks, and I’m getting more and more eager! Of course, you do realize if this book turns out to be lousy, I’ll be the most disappointed person on the planet! 😯 But Jim Butcher’s writing hasn’t let me down yet, even if I have been driven half mad by this long wait. (Can we say it all together, Boys and Girls? SIX YEARS!! Ahem. Thanks.)

My choice for Dresden Files character of the day is Michael Carpenter, a close and trusted friend of Harry Dresden. He is a devout Catholic, and a Knight of the Cross, who wields a mighty sword called Amoracchius. 

This is my favorite fan art representation of Michael, and it looks
pretty much exactly as I imagine him.

Michael’s own words give you a pretty good picture of who he is.

As you can see from the next two paintings,
Michael is a handy person to have on your team,
as Harry well knows and appreciates.

As the series progresses, Michael’s role in Harry’s life
grows in importance and scope, but rest assured,  he never
flinches from doing what he believes to be right.

    • Wooohoooo! I’m glad you’ll give it a try. If it’s not your thing, I won’t think less of you. Honest. Not much. 😀 😀 😀 Seriously, I don’t care how good they might be, not all books work for every reader, and I understand that. But I can’t help hoping you’ll like it. The series started as a college project of Butcher’s twenty years ago. The first couple of books are heavy into creatures that were the rage then, like shifters, but they continue to grow in scope and progress to other realms and just about every supe you’ve ever heard of before long. Plus a LOT of human characters who also grow in strength and scope. Some of the stories include more graphic “attacks” than others, but truly, I never imagined the series would strengthen as much as it did. From a good start to an amazing #15, it’s so well worth the read. And Harry is a hero for the ages, with all the human flaws and failings we all have. He just works so hard to rise above them. AND HE’S FUNNY. 😀 I’ll be looking forward to seeing how you feel, but I hope you’ll give it time to grow on you. I BELIEVE IN HARRY DRESDEN! 😀

      • I’ve started book one and am enjoying it. The big thing putting me off is the price tag on the later books in the series. For eBooks, I don’t usually pay more than 4.99, and these come in at 6.99. However, as the first few are a mere 0.99, I’ll give them a go and see how I get on. Thanks for adding 15 books to my TBR, Mrs Marcia 😂😂😂.

        • Once you are hooked (as I hope you’ll be), you might find yourself in real trouble. I decided a couple of years ago that I wanted ALL the books in HARDBACK format, and with the Chris McGrath covers, for my Dresden shelf. I managed to get most of them, but some are only available through other sellers and can range in price from $50 to well over $100 each!!! Even I have a hard time with that. 😯 I haven’t given up, but I still have some gaps to fill.

          And it was my pleasure to add 15 (soon to be 16) books to your TBR! *Dusts off hands, and walks away with an evil chuckle* My work here is done! 😀 😀 😀

    • I have the first in his series and started it some time back, but somehow never got pulled in. I need to go back and re-read. Sometimes it’s all about the frame of mind you’re in when you read something. I have a feeling it’s a series I’d enjoy, too. 🙂

    • It’s another great piece by Mika Blackfield, I think, and it is perfection. I do love Michael Carpenter for so many reasons, not the least of which is his loyal friendship to Harry, in spite of their difference approaches to various things. And his bravery and faith are so well portrayed that you have to admire him, through and through.

    I’m starting book 5, Death Masks tonight, so I have a lot of catching up to do, but I am familiar with Michael. I love your enthusiasm for this series!

    • Oh? You noticed my enthusiasm? 😀 Okay, I guess I’m broadcasting it excessively, but why not? I’m on a break from a lot of my normal postings, but it’s easy to pull together some fun images and do a bit of cheer leading for my favorite wizard of all time. And for sure “I BELIEVE IN HARRY DRESDEN!”

      Michael is a wonderful character whose loyal friendship and support are inspirational. I love that he doesn’t look down on Harry for not seeing everything the same way he does, even if he harbors the hope he’ll convert him at some point. But he’s there when needed, and later in the series becomes more central to Harry’s life than you’d ever imagine. He’s a good man in the truest sense of the phrase.

      Happy reading tonight. (Have you met Harry’s brother Thomas, yet? I don’t remember which book he shows up in first.)

    • Yeah, me too, Staci. I’d hate to have to track down Jim Butcher and smite him about the head and shoulders in righteous indignation. After a six year wait, it needs to be blinkin’ FANTASTIC. 😀 But I have a feeling it will be the best yet. He certainly left things set up for that to be the case.

      I’m going to read as much of #3 as I can today at lunch, then jump ahead to #5 so I can read with Mae. She re-read parts of the Pendergast stories with me as I caught up to her, and it was fun talking about them afterward. A.X.L. Pendergast is second only to Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden in my long list of beloved characters. 😀

Snarky (and witty) humor abounds, and the villains go from the vamps and shifters popoular 20 years ago to things you won’t believe. And all the while, the plots are getting more complex and sophisticated. I think you’d love it. 😀

    • Michael is one of my favorite characters, Craig, and that’s saying a lot, since Butcher excels at creating a supporting cast of all sorts for Harry to lean on, help, fight with, learn from, and otherwise hobnob around beside. And the nice thing is that he has allowed for growth in each of them.

      I do think a strong supporting cast is important, though I’m still learning how to do that well. But just imagine how well it works in film. (Jack Elam and Strother Martin, for instance, as we were talking about today.) They won’t all be large roles, though some certainly can be, but I think they all have their place and help move the tale along. We also learn a lot about our main characters by how they interact with them.

  8. Love the heckhounds bit! Michael is like Harry’s redeeming character, in the metaphorical sense and in the saving-his-ass sense. When I re-read Skin Game, it reminded me of the price Michael paid for being so close to Harry. And MIchael’s wife, Charity, is no slouch, either! 😀

    • Charity can be a powerhouse, but as I re-read, I remember again how very mad I was for book after book, for the way she treated Harry. She was downright hateful, even if she had reason to worry whenever Michael joined Harry in yet another battle. But she makes a good counterpoint, and I guess if I had a house that full of kids, I might get a bit cranky, too. 😀 Glad to see you catching up on these, and the heckhounds quote is a classic! 😀
