#poetry #writingtips – Marcia, I’m sure you agree: Reading and writing poetry can help authors fine-tune their skills.

As I mentioned in my last post, I haven’t written fiction or worked on fiction in a long time, although I’m okay with that. What writing I have been working on is poetry.
There are a few things I have discovered about poetry as I started writing my “sonnets from the desert,” as I eventually decided to name them. I discovered that poetry can teach a fiction writer many things.

I absolutely agree, Linda, and I thank you for sharing such an inspiring post. It makes me want to write a new poem tonight. (Except for that part where I’m already in a stupor from such a long day’s work! Of course, nobody said it had to be a GOOD poem, right? 😀 )

As I started writing with poetry I can’t do but totally agree with this post. and I remember that some time ago I found, but sorry I don’t remember where, such a piece of advice for authors: to write poetry at first. So Marcia, we two have obeyed, even if not knowing it the rule.

I started writing poetry in grade school. Admittedly, I was no Emily Dickinson or Robert Frost–but I collected volumes of poetry books, which I still have after all these years. I wrote scores of poems that mean a lot to me, if not to anyone else.
Writing poetry helped me develop an affinity for words–appreciate alliteration, assonance, and consonance. To this day, I’m deeply moved by other writers’ poetry. 🙂

I love this! Writers need to be familiar with all sorts of genres and poetry–the study of it and the writing of it–is so valuable! I think the best writers are constantly renegotiating the lines between genres anyway.

I love the line about renegotiating the lines between genres. Very true, and welcome to the board! Hope to see you around here often. 😊
