Still Alive & Kicking…Feebly!

Just wanted to let you guys know I haven’t abandoned you. Went to the doctor yesterday to see if my bout with what was probably the flu had left me with a sinus infection. It had. But it also HADN’T left!! Turns out, after ten days of misery, the flu virus…yes that very strain that’s in the news…is alive and well in my system, STILL. 😦 But I am now armed with serious medication. And I will take the dang stuff. I have a presentation to give in ten days, and I must be well!

I did learn something I want to share with you guys. If you get to the doctor immediately upon coming down with the flu, there IS something they can do, besides give you antibiotics, which don’t work on viral infections. Tamiflu can help you kick the flu, if you get to the doctor within the first 48 hours. After that, it’s pretty much a treat the symptoms and let it run its miserable course.

One way to know you have come down with the flu, as opposed to a bad cold, say, is by the rapid onset. I did know that, so I thought I had the flu from the start. I got sick in about 30 seconds. Seriously. I was sitting at my computer, working away, and I started to cough like crazy. Five days later, I hadn’t stopped, but had rapidly gone from the initial coughing spell to fever, in less than an hour. A cold usually builds more gradually over several days, starting with some sneezing, or a runny nose, perhaps, then gradually a scratchy throat or cough. Remember, the various symptoms build over a few days, instead of body-slamming you to the ground, instantly. Had I gone to the doctor within 48 hours of this train hitting me, I could be well now, instead of still running a fever and feeling terrible.

So. Lessons learned and shared with you. Take care of yourselves, folks. This is no fun! And remember…the best prevention is to wash your hands…at LEAST 167 times a day!! Go do it now! It might keep you well. 🙂

Now carry on, good folk! I’ll check in when I can.

    • Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I don’t think anything would have headed this one off…it’s the H3N2 mutation of swine flu, and it’s killing people nationwide. And since it hit instantly, nothing short of the Tamiflu anti-flu medication would likely stop it. Sometimes good over the counter preventatives are really helpful, and sometimes you have to drag out the big guns. I will check this one out, though, as part of my future arsenal, especially if it’s helpful for the common cold, which most prescriptions are not. Stay well!

  1. My sympathies – I have it too 😦
Coughing mostly gone now, but major dizziness and weakness continues, damn it!
And I have a horse show scheduled to compete in 8 days from now – not sure if I’m going to make it.
I did, however, make the most of being stuck indoors, and finished the short story I’d plotted out in the patches when I’ve felt well enough to sit upright!

    • Aww, I’m sorry to hear you’re sick, Deborah! Hope it is soon gone. It’s really wicked, isn’t it? Glad you were able to get some work done. I was plugging away as best I could on my editing, too, but I may have been able to shake this sooner had I been resting in bed where the doctor said I belonged. Who knows? Sitting upright has definitely been difficult. Still is, in fact. Here’s wishing us both good health very soon!

    • Thanks, Mishka. While being ill is never fun, it does add insult to injury to be sick at the start of the year. Had to cancel my traditional southern New Year’s dinner of roast pork and hoppin’ John, guaranteed to bring good luck for a full 365 days! 😦 But I’m getting better, and I’ll make up for lost time. Good to see you, btw. Hope all is well?

    • Close enough, Ned. I’m taking your advice as gospel, being as how you’ve had all that “playful” experience. 🙂 Thanks for the well wishes, my friend. It’s much appreciated, and I can honestly say that I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel today. I’m…ready for it?…not coughing! (Probably shouldn’t have said that in print…this stuff has a habit of rapid U-turns!) You stay well way out there on the other coast! And I’ll be back soon. (Takes more than some steenkin’ ol’ SWINE to keep me down. I’ve had lots of experience with various sorts of those, and I’m still here! And still crazy after all these years.)

  2. Glad you are feeling better. I got hit on a Friday night so by Monday it was too late for that medication. Now over 3 wks later I finally have some strength but the cough is lingering and driving me to distraction! It will be soon when you are doing cartwheels once again!! lol
