No Wonder…

…I’ve been craving my tea ICED all day! We have now had our first “official” day of this summer where we hit 100 degrees! And we’re only midway through June. I shudder to think what July and August are going to be like. Urk.  And THIS is why I love Florida so much more in the winter, when I can garden every day. 🙂 Hope it’s cooler where you are!

Promo Ideas for Signings: Attention Tea Lovers!

Adagio 2
adagio 1

I have to thank Jennifer Melzer for turning me on to the Adagio Teas website. Not only do they have absolutely delicious teas of their own, but they have a set up where you can combine teas, flavorings, and inclusions to produced your own custom blends, and your own labels! It’s so much fun.

Being the hard-core tea drinker that I am, I’m partial to writing a bit of it into my books. In the case of Willow Greene in Swamp Ghosts and Finding Hunter, it’s a bit more than “a little.” She’s a little New Age in appearance and dress, and loves her herbs and teas. (Not to let that fool you, though. She’s a clever business woman and a very strong character, in spite of it.) And Willow loves tea as much as I do. She has one for every mood or ailment, I think.

It was on my first visit to Adagio Teas that I decided my characters would be great inspiration for some custom blends I wanted to try for myself. For you folks who enjoy a good cuppa as much as I do, I hope you’ll stop by and check them out. I now give away sample tins of these teas at signings and presentations, and they’ve gone over very well. Plus the little tins serve as a nice bit of promotion for my books, since the labels include portions of the title graphic, and my name. 🙂

I now have ten custom blends, including: Sarah’s Favorite Earl Grey, Ruth’s Berry Apple Blend, Gunnar’s Assam Blend, Maggie’s Tropical Green, Willow’s Raspberry Cooler, Willow’s Soothing Chamomile, Lester’s White Cranberry, Maggie’s DECAF Mango Surprise, and DECAF Orange Mango Blend, and Christmas on Wake-Robin Ridge.

Hope you’ll check some of them out. You can order them in various sizes, including a small sample package to see what you think. I don’t get paid for this, per se, but any orders at all will earn me points I can use on my next purchase, including my own. So far, just my own orders keep me from ever paying shipping, and usually give me a few dollars off on my purchase as well. (This is a big help when you have over 32 different teas in little cannisters on your counter! 😯 )

If you stop by the site, be sure to look at all the wonderful teas they offer, AND you might consider making your own custom blends, as well. It’s so much fun. You can create them for you own use, or try using them as promotional giveaways at events. The cute little sample tins run about $2 each if you order 10 or more, so you don’t want to give away thousands of them, but a bowl full of freebies on your display table is a nice touch, and not totally prohibitive for most events I’ve been to, so far.

Ink and Bone: The Great Library Website – Check It Out!

ink and bone

Just got a newsletter from Rachel Caine with a link to her new Ink and Bone website. Great goobley oobley! Caine has gone ALL OUT on this page, and it is drop dead gorgeous! The artwork is to die for, and there are lots of fun things to look at and read. A couple of videos to watch, too, though I haven’t had time for that, yet. You really should stop by. If this doesn’t make you want to read the book, I don’t know what would.

Top Ten Tuesday List: Summer Reading 2015

My first time taking part in Top Ten Tuesday yesterday. It’s fun!! Hope some of you see a book or two you’d like to try.

Top Ten Tuesdays are a fun meme, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. The idea is to  feature lists related to all things bookish–characters, authors, titles, and favorites. What a neat way to find new and interesting books on all sorts of topics. Good way to discover bloggers who love the sorts of books you do, too.

Check out The Broke and The Bookish for their top ten and lists of other bloggers who participate! And maybe give it a try, yourselves.

The subject for June 16 is:  Top Ten Books On My Summer 2015 Reading List. Since I’ll be home recovering from foot surgery through all of August and probably into September, I might actually make some progress on these. So without further ado, here’s my list:

Introduction: Jason Link

Hello, my name is Jason Link, author of The Legender, and I’m happy to now be a part of “The Write Stuff” writing/blogging community. I’ve recently come back to the US after many years of living in Nicaragua–the tropical land where I proposed to my wife on an active volcano. (This, however, makes me sound more adventurous than I really am.) Instead of cutting my way through the jungles with a machete, I now cut my way through academia with a pen. I have taught high school English and I am now in Pasadena attending seminary. Happy to be here and join in on the conversation. (To learn more, my personal site is www.authorjasonlink.com). Thanks!

Marketing Help?

question-mark-8-xxl

Is anyone interested–or know of someone who’d be interested–in taking over some of the marketing aspects of my self-published books? I simply have not been able to find the time to figure out which advertising is right for me, which email lists I should strive to get on, the best promotions to run, and so forth. I can’t afford a big-time marketing firm, needless to say, but would love to find someone familiar with the best way to go about this, and looking to augment their income with a (very) small account. Anyone have any ideas? I’m open for suggestions, recommendations, and warnings. 🙂 Thanks!

Birthday Book Sale

I shared a poem from Seeking Solace during excerpt week and was so thrilled with everyone’s lovely response. I thought I’d best let you know that the Kindle version of the book is on sale this weekend in the UK and US in celebration of my birthday, in case any of you were interested. I’d be incredibly grateful to anyone who picks up a copy and if you enjoy it, I’m sure you all know how appreciated and helpful a brief review is. Have a great weekend when it comes, everyone!

Seeking Solace Seeking Solace

It’s my birthday this weekend, so I’ll be spending the majority of my time with friends and family. As a means of celebrating however, the Kindle version of my most recent publication, Seeking Solace, will be on sale in both the UK (found here) and the US (found here) from today until Sunday.

Seeking Solace contains a total of sixty poems that span a wide variety of different topics, ranging from love and friendship right up to war and grief. All were written with a desire to create poetry that is approachable, relatable and honest.

I’d be incredibly grateful to anyone who checks it out or spreads the word, and if you enjoy it, a quick review would make a wonderful birthday gift, wouldn’t it? 😉

You can find a few quotes below to give you a little taster. Have a lovely weekend…

The Darkling Prince is Now Available for Pre-Order

darkling princeKrayven has only ever wanted one thing: his mother’s love. Cold and beautiful as starlight, he trails after the queen, an unseen shadow vying for affection she would never lower herself to give. Enshrouded in secrets and mystery, he watches each day as she travels to the Nether Lake and stares longingly into the deep.

He knows not what she’s looking for, and following her is forbidden, for her secrets are her own. When his father’s jester informs him that she speaks to spirits there, the boy cannot resist the lure to spy upon her in the act. Perhaps he will overhear something to shed light on the aloof woman who brought him into the world, and then went on about her life as though he wasn’t even a part of it.

What he learns while spying is enough to send him running, for some secrets are better left undiscovered, lest they wake the darkness in a heart that was born to know only pain.

The Darkling Prince, a novella that takes place between the events in Winterborn and Jack in the Green, is now available for pre-order on Amazon for just $0.99. Other venues will follow over the next few days, so be sure to check the book page over on my site for updates as they are added.

Cover Reveal: The Darkling Prince

Today is an exciting day, as it brings me one step further on a path I’ve been traveling for what feels like a lifetime.

It seems like a lifetime ago that I embarked on the endeavor of publishing my first novel. The Goblin Market was a project I’d been working on for years, writing and rewriting it the entire time I was going to college, but never quite knowing what to do with it whenever I reached a point where it felt done. Then I met my husband, who at the time was podcasting his zombie novel ESCAPE. He convinced me to podcast The Goblin Market, and I set up a website, bought a cheap microphone and downloaded freeware recording software to embark on the rewarding, but complicated endeavor that is podcasting a novel. It felt like it took forever to record, edit and put episodes out into the world, but I did it and then I began the process of independently publishing the book itself. The podcast is no longer available, but there is now a professionally recorded audiobook, a paperback and an ebook version of The Goblin Market, which is still very exciting to me. The love of your first “real” novel never dies.

At the time I was very motivated. I knew right where the next story was going to go, and I’d even started writing it, but as things happen from time to time I lost momentum and my inspiration began to wane. Jack in the Green, the follow-up novel to The Goblin Market got put on the backburner so many times, I lost faith in the story itself and thought maybe I should shy away from the pleas for a continuation of the story and move on to other things. I couldn’t ignore the pleas anymore than I could ignore the story itself, and for years I poked at it, prodding and trying to breathe life back into it so I could move on with my life.

See, I’m one of those people that cannot abide unfinished business. I don’t like to break promises and I lose sleep over things that need to be taken care of. That’s not to say I haven’t had my fair share of good nights’ sleep over the last five years, but there have been times it’s really bothered me that I hadn’t been able to finish Jack in the Green yet. I wrote a lot of other things in the interim. Several other novels, tons of short stories and then I sat down one day and wrote Winterborn–a short novelette meant to bridge the gap between The Goblin Market and Jack in the Green. Maybe it would quiet the disturbance and get me back on track with the novel that needed to be written. For a while it did just that and diligently worked through the 65,000 words I’d already written on the manuscript that seriously didn’t seem to want to be written.

A character emerged during the reworking, an embittered young prince who needed further exploration, and several times over the last year I found myself tinkering with his story as he folded himself into Jack’s. I spent most of May working on Jack in the Green because that story finally decided it was time. And then near the end of the month I sat down and started writing a novella about that angry little princeling. With the story now finished and in edits and rewrites, it’s time to advance one step further Into the Green.

Coming July 10, 2015, pre-order details to follow shortly. In the meantime, if you’d like to begin your journey Into the Green, you can begin at The Goblin Market and follow it up with Winterborn before embarking ever further into the darkness that lurks between the Underground kingdoms with The Darkling Prince. If you’re already familiar with this world, you can learn more about the story itself over on my website in the Cover Reveal post there.
