‘The Elements Save Mother Earth’ (Excerpt) Author, D.B. Mauldin

“You say the sylphs are perishing? Well, I am not surprised. The air is nearly pure poison. How many sylphs are left?” he asked.

“I’m really not sure, Paracelsus. I have been receiving the sad news of their perishing for some time now,” Tiina, Queen of the sylphs replied sadly.

“Have you been in contact with any of the other elementals?” Paracelsus asked. Continue reading

Thank You & Some News

thank_you_banner-500

A big thank you to everyone who participated in #ExcerptWeek, whether by sharing some of your work, or by taking the time to read, comment on, and pass along  the work of others. It was a great week, and I had such a fun time seeing what you’ve all written. We’ll do it again soon.

In the meantime, please don’t forget that  this is a community board, and you are encouraged to share excerpts, promos, news, resources, ideas, and questions any time you want. The more the better. An active blog draws more eyes, and as writers, eyes are what we want, right? So post often, and remember to share what you read here, thanks.

Now for the news. I’m planning several new things for this blog, and one of them is Fabulous Friday Guest Bloggers. Starting this Friday, I’ll be hosting guest bloggers, as you probably figured out from that title, as often as I can find folks who want to participate. I’m probably going to surprise you by not announcing who my guest will be until Thursday, so stay tuned for that news. Hope this will be something you’ll all enjoy. I know I’m going to!

And that’s it for now. Will post my #RomancingSeptember links shortly. Have a great week, everyone.

Amazon Update

It seems Kindle books are back again, ready for download. KDP Sales, Bookshelves, Dashboard, whathaveyou, is not. Now, the message is that KDP is down for “scheduled maintenance.” So, no uploading new books, or checking your sales at the moment. Hopefully, that will be back soon, as well. 🙂

Amazon…Anyone Else Having Issues?

I seem to be locked out of anything to do with purchasing books, checking on my sales, or otherwise doing business with Kindle this morning. I can access my book pages, but the options to buy on the right side are gone. When I go to my Sales Report/Bookshelf pages, they aren’t available. The last time I checked, I did get a message that said “Sorry. This feature isn’t available. We’re working to resolve the problem.” So I’m guessing it’s not just me. Wondering how many of you are affected, as well?

Can you buy books this morning?

#Excerpt Week – Have Bags, Will Travel #memoir/travel/humor

Have Bags amazon image

It seems that with every trip I take I’m faced with issues of dealing with overweight luggage and have become almost a person of interest when it comes to passing through Canada customs on every return trip.

This book has snippets of stories from travels in earlier times when airline restrictions were a little more lenient (when overweight luggage wasn’t a huge concern), opinions on some of the places I’ve visited, and fond memories with best friends.

Here is an excerpt from Airport Security

Returning home from a vacation is always a nerve-racking event for me. Instead of flying home and basking in the memories of the wonderful time I’ve just had on vacation, I repeatedly go through my receipts from the trip so I can carefully calculate how not to exceed the fixed limit we’re allowed to bring back without penalty. I must remember which receipts correspond to the tags I’ve already cut off so I can take them out of the pile. More math!

Most people don’t worry about such things—but I have to. It’s practically like my face is on a milk carton: HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WOMAN SHOPPING? For decades now, I’ve been consistently pulled over at customs. A planeload of people pick up their luggage and sail through the exit doors to freedom, and one person (and her husband) get singled out for interrogation. This happens on ninety percent of my trips. Why is it that I’m picked out of two hundred and fifty passengers to be interrogated? I lament, but I’m familiar with all the tricks by now: don’t wear flashy jewelry, don’t dress up, try to blend in. I can’t help it, though. I have what I’ve identified as shopping face. . .

Have Bags, Will Travel is available now in ebook at Amazon, and will be available in print this week.

#Excerpt Week Finding Hunter CH 8

Final FH Cover Smaller

A shorter one this time…a scene from CH 8, from Hunter’s POV, and giving you a bit more insight into who Hunter Painter really is. Another of his secrets, exposed. 🙂 Poor Hunter. He’s so befuddled.

******

I duck, climbing in, nod my thanks, but don’t speak.
He talks enough for both of us. My head hurts.
I yell at him, see his shocked face.
He stops, pushes me out, drives away fast.
Walking again.

Chapter 8

You Write
~~~
Saturday, January 19, 2013
 HUNTER WATCHED WILLOW stroll through her herb garden, basket over her arm, and small, sharp scissors in hand. The weather had been mild this winter, and there were plenty of hardy herbs still green and fragrant. She gathered bunches to hang in the kitchen, and the snip-snip sound followed her as she moved along each row.
Sitting at a white wrought iron table in the shade of a young laurel oak, legs stretched out in front of him, Hunter’s sharp eyes missed very little. Admiring Willow’s graceful movements had been a pastime of his since the first day she came into his life, an activity as familiar as breathing in those days. Today, it brought a perspective that was new—and completely unanticipated.
Today, she was his, as he was hers. Today, his heart was at peace, even if only temporarily, and the constant, unfulfilled longing from years ago was gone. She loved him, which made everything different, and he refused to let anything steal this moment from him.
His gaze lingered on the silky blue fabric of her skirt, blowing around her slim legs, and the pale gleam of her unbound hair, cascading down her back. Words tumbled through his mind, and that familiar need to commit them to paper took over.
With his small, spiral notebook and pen in hand, Hunter wrote, spilling his thoughts onto each narrow blue line, still as in love with the process as he had been as a young child. Then, as now, random marks turned into letters in front of his eyes, and letters into words. Words became sentences, then thought, then pure emotion. His pen flew across the paper, capturing every image and feeling, so he could revisit them later, at will.
Hunter Painter loved to write. It helped convince him he wasn’t simply taking up space on this planet, and it was as much a part of him as his gray eyes and brown hair. When he was lost in the process, the rest of the world disappeared, which is why he didn’t realize Willow had finished her herb gathering, and stood behind him, reading over his shoulder. Oblivious, he scribbled on, trying to capture each word before it got away.
When she laid her palm on his shoulder, he shot straight up, pen flying from his hand, and spiral notebook dropping to the ground. “Geeze, Willow! Didn’t know you were there!”
He scrambled around, retrieving pen and notebook, hoping she hadn’t had a chance to see what he was doing, but one glance at her expression told him he’d been caught. Running wouldn’t help. He’d tried that. She would follow.
Willow took a seat at the tiny table, the basket of herbs by her feet. “You write.” Amazement was in her voice and shone from her eyes. “Poems.”
Cheeks burning, he eased back into his chair, uncertain how to respond. “Yeah … I guess I do.”
“You guess? You write, Hunter. Why are you so embarrassed? What I read was wonderful.”
He stammered, face flushing redder. “I never … show anyone. It’s just … something I do.”
“For how long?”
“Always. Long’s I can remember.”
“You’ve been writing as long as you can remember, and no one knows about it? No one has read any of it?”
Hunter sank lower in his chair, groaning inside. She wasn’t going to let this go. “No. Never.”
“Why on earth not?”
He shrugged, face still hot. “Never showed it to anybody.”
Brow slightly furrowed, she uttered a noncommittal sound. “Hmm.”
“What’s ‘hmm’ mean?”
She rose, picked up her basket, and beckoned to him. “Let’s go inside. I’ll fix us some lunch.”
Left alone, he had little choice but to follow her, muttering under his breath the entire way. “Done it again. Never showed anybody a word I’ve written for thirty years, and somehow, after only a few weeks, Willow knows all about it. How does this keep happening?”
#ExcerptWeek – USURPER’S LEGACY by Deborah Jay #EpicFantasy
So this time I am treating you to a teaser excerpt from my upcoming release, sequel to THE PRINCE’S MAN, titled (probably) USURPER’S LEGACY.
This is from the prologue, which gives us the climactic scene from the end of the previous book from the villain’s point of view…
“Risada!”
The high voice cut through the crackle and hiss of the burning hall. Mykel spun towards it and saw the one piece of good fortune left to him. When the beam fell, Lady Risada had been forced back from the dais and now stood, wavering on unsteady feet amidst tumbled chairs, two rows over. Mykel smiled. Small compensation, but at least one of Halnashead’s spies would not leave the hall alive. He raised his sword.
“I don’t think so.”
The voice came from right beside him—just before a chair crashed against his shoulder, knocking him off balance. One of its legs caught him along the side of the head and stars sparkled across his vision. The breath that whooshed out of his body was replaced by smoke as he inhaled, and he coughed it back up even as he lashed out at his attacker. His sword swung through empty space as something smacked into the back of one knee, felling him.
He landed in a tangle amidst fallen chairs and smouldering greenery. Heat seared his lungs as he struggled to regain his breath. If he didn’t escape the hall soon he would die, yet he still found his focus drawn to Lady Risada, on her knees now and so tantalizingly close.
#FindingHunter Available in Print Format Now!
Final FH Cover Smaller
Woohoo! Finding Hunter is now available in print as well as Kindle format. Here’s the blurb from amazon:
Before, I never thought about taking a life. Not once.
Now, the thought fills my mind day and night, and
I wonder how I’ll hide that terrible need,
As an old car swings to the shoulder,
And stops.
~ Traveling Man ~
Hunter Painter’s darkest fears have shaped his offbeat personality since he was a child, crippling him in ways invisible to those unable to see past his quiet exterior. In a sleepy Florida town known for its eccentric inhabitants, he’s always been a mystery to most.
Only one person sees beyond Hunter’s quirky facade. Willow Greene, the new age herbalist who owns the local candle and potpourri shop, has secretly loved him since they were in high school. When, sixteen years later, she discovers Hunter has loved her just as long, Willow hopes her dreams are finally coming true.
Soon, Willow learns that Hunter fears happiness at her side isn’t in the cards for him. With her natural optimism and courage, she almost convinces him he’s wrong—that they can really have that life together they both long for—but even Willow can’t stop what Hunter knows is coming.
One by one, his worst nightmares become reality, culminating in an unthinkable tragedy, which devastates everyone it touches. Willow’s battle begins in earnest as Hunter is plunged into a bleak, guilt-ridden despair, threatening to destroy not only their love, but Hunter, himself.
Finding Hunter is the story of a lost man’s desperate struggle to make his way home again, and one woman’s unshakeable faith in him and the power of their love.
Update to Welcome Page (Link at top)
Happy Freya’s Day, Everyone! Hope you are all set for the weekend. Still limping here, but forging ahead regardless, because you can’t just lie down and quit when your foot hurts, dadgum it! 🙂
Just wanted to let you guys know that I finally got around to revising the Welcome Page linked above in the black section, to better reflect what this site is about. I also added my few rules for contributors and readers alike. Not too stringent, but in place to keep this site friendly to ALL writers (and readers), and avoid any conflicts. Please take a minute to read the post, even if you’ve been here from the start, and especially if you are a new visitor or contributor. Don’t want any confusion later.
Also, please rest assured that if I feel like anyone has gotten a bit out of bounds (whether intentional or not), I won’t be tossing you to the side like yesterday’s news. I’ll simply contact you privately to remind you, and that will be that. 🙂
Having said all of this, I do want to reassure you that to date, no one has ever done or said anything here I found objectionable or controversial at all, so I suspect these rules will never be called into play. But they’re officially posted now, just in case.
Now…back to Excerpt Week. You still have 3 days to share your work with us, and we’d love to read it, and share it with our own groups, so what are you waiting for? Get posting. We LOVE seeing what you’re up to. And we WILL pass it along. 😀
