How to use short stories to promote a novel

beyond.jpgI read and enjoyed Deborah’s review of Rayne Hall’s Deep Point of View in October, and when I discovered Hall’s entire series was in Kindle Unlimited I gave several a try. My favorite was Writing Short Stories to Promote Your Novels, which charged me up to put together a free anthology of paranormal short stories and novellas with some friends. (I hope you’ll check it out — I’m really proud of it. And did I mention it’s FREE?)

Ahem, back to the point. I know everyone’s time is limited, so I wrote up a quick cheat sheet based on Hall’s excellent book. I hope this helps make your own short story attempt a success!

Goal: Your promotional short story needs to represent your novel and brand. So it should:

  • Be in the same genre and subgenre. (My example: Urban fantasy with paranormal romance crossover)
  • Contain many of the same motifs (My example: shifters, spunky heroines, first person POV, romance with low steam level but moderate sexual tension, focus on intrigue/politics/world-building, action and suspense, outsiders finding their place in the world)
  • Elicit the same mood (My example: page-turning, light, romantic, character-driven, action-packed)
  • Appeal to your average reader (My example: forty year old housewife who yearns for adventure and romance)
  • Be set in the same world (My example: modern USA…with werewolves)

Characters:

  • There should be one main character and no more than four side characters. Two side characters is optimal — one who’s pulling the character toward what she should do and one who’s pulling the character toward what she shouldn’t do.
  • Good main characters are your novel’s protagonist (if the story is a prequel) or a side character. Side characters are especially handy for those of you writing straight romance since many readers won’t want to see your novel’s romantic lead in an earlier relationship.
  • Use the same motivation checklist you’d use when writing a novel: Who is she? What does she want? Why? What’s at stake? Is there a ticking clock to ratchet up the tension? What obstacles stand in her way?

Setting:

  • Should match your novel as closely as possible
  • Look for a single location, especially a “closed room” where the characters can’t leave
  • Good settings are unique and atmospheric, matching the mood of the novel

51uBNuIKMfL._UY250_Structure (for a 3,000 word short story):

  • Beginning — This should clearly state the protagonist’s problem
  • First plot event — Something happens, not just the protagonist being lonely or sad
  • Second plot event — Ditto
  • Dilemma, danger, or sacrifice
  • Conclusion — Does she get what she wants…or what she needs?

If you get stuck and need to be walked through the process in a workshop manner, I definitely recommend Rayne Hall’s book, from which I drew this information. It’s 99 cents, or free with Kindle Unlimited. And don’t forget to check out your free copy of Beyond Secret Worlds to see how we took this idea and ran with it. I’m looking forward to seeing your own experiments here soon.

Excited to announce the release of Pedal

I’m excited to announce the release of my 2nd novel, Pedal, which examines the life of 49-year-old elementary school music teacher, Joanne Brick, who is fired and struggles to reclaim her life back through bicycle racing.FRONT ONLY_lower res

This uplifting story tells how Joanne—who lives with her bossy older sister, and ailing mother—deals with unemployment, loneliness and loss of self-worth. Pedal is a contemporary family drama based around the theme of daring to change and how ordinary people deal with those changes. (Beyond the Book Store just did a wonderful review of Pedal.)

Great news for all who own a Kindle, Assent Publishing has reduced the e-book price for the next couple of days to only 99 cents! For more info and to purchase, here’s the link: http://tinyurl.com/Pedal-Kindle

Thanks, and I’d be very grateful if you would share.

Another Road Trip!

Good Morning, All!

Hope you each had a wonderful day yesterday, either celebrating Thanksgiving with your friends and families, or simply celebrating a beautiful Thursday in November! There is ALWAYS something to celebrate!

Today, I’ll be running around like a crazy person, getting ready for my trip to Charleston tomorrow. My daughter & family have just bought a new home, and moved in a week ago today, and I’m planning to do my Granny thing, keeping two-year old Kaelen busy while his parents continue the huge job of  unpacking and setting up house. It’s 5+ hour drive from here, but my payoff is this:

Definitely worth the drive, wouldn’t you say? 🙂

I’ll be back Wednesday afternoon, so play amongst yourselves until then. I will have my tablet and, of course, my iPhone, with me, and I’ll do my best to check in with you guys each night. But I can’t promise.

And before I forget, Carmen’s #FabulousFridayGuestBlogger post will be the last for the year, unless someone contacts me, desperate to post between now and January, or unless I decided to become my OWN guest poster between now and then, ha! The posts WILL start up again in the new year, so be thinking about what YOU’D like to write about. 😀

Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you soon!

Today, our guest blogger, Carmen Stefanescu, is going to tell us a bit about the Romanian tradition of St. Andrew’s Night. I hope you find this as interesting as I did. The “floor” is yours, Carmen.

St Andrew’s Night – Romanian Halloween

We have no Halloween where I live, I mean Romania, better known to many people as Dracula’s country. However, there’s another tradition I can tell you about – St. Andrew’s Night.

30th November is St Andrew’s Day in Romania, a day full of symbolism as St Andrew, one of the 12 Apostles, is considered the one who made the Romanians Christians. But more powerful in traditions and superstitions is the preceding night, the eve of St. Andrew’s day.

29th to 30th November, called St. Andrew’s Night, is a magic night when people have to do certain things to keep the evil away from them. St. Andrew’s Night is, in some way, the equivalent of Halloween.  It has a lot of traditions and superstitions. Ghosts come out in the human world, wolves speak the human language and predict horrible things.  Vampires, zombies, ghosts living-dead wander along the roads in search of human preys. People who are attacked this night by evil spirits will turn into werewolves. To protect themselves against evil, people can use garlic and spells.

Here are several customs on this special night:

–  To get rid of evil spirits, and prevent them entering the house, villagers grease the doors and threshold with crushed garlic. They also use garlic to protect the stables, too. Animals are given basil in their food and housewives sprinkle the stables with holly water.

–  Mothers draw small crosses on the palms of their small children to protect them.

– The young maidens who want to get married put several leaves of basil under their pillows.  Or, another custom, if they want to see their fated husband – the girls should stay naked between two mirrors, at midnight, holding two burning candles in their hands. They will see in the mirror behind them scenes of their future life, including the face of their future groom.

– Housewives turn all the glasses and cups with the mouth down to prevent evil settling inside them.

– The weather this night predicts how the coming winter will be. If the sky is clear, the winter will be mild with less snow and warmer days. If the sky is cloudy, it means the winter will be a harsh one.

– St. Andrew’s Night, when the sky opens and the witches recharge their powers, is the best moment to find the answers of past mysteries and unsolved enigmas.  It implies taking part in an odd ritual in a graveyard. Then, in a basin with water,   over which an incantation is uttered, people will see everything that happened and wasn’t known.

Thank you for hosting me today, Marcia! I really appreciate it.

Can’t say it better than this! Happy Thanksgiving, ALL!

Happy Thanksgiving for everyone who celebrates it.

Even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving (at all, or at this time), it’s always time to be thankful, right?

Long rambles under scarlet flushed trees

on days growing cool

leaves crunching underfoot

Warmth radiating from a steaming mug

of cocoa or tea

cradled while perusing a good book

A thick wedge of pumpkin pie

blooming with flowers

of whipped cream

Gathering holidays of family and friends

and the walls

echoing with laughter
