Still trying to catch up after so many interruptions this fall, so not back on my normal posting schedule. Since we have no guest blogger today, I thought maybe I’d just share an excerpt from my first novel, Wake-Robin Ridge, available on Amazon for the permanently low price of $.99.
“Wake-Robin Ridge, where ghosts walk,
ancient legends abound, and things still go bump in the night.”

EXCERPT
A slow, cold mile later, he could see the faintest hint of dawn through the trees just ahead, and knew he was approaching the clearing. The trick was to get close enough to see without being seen. He found a spot behind some thick but low-growing bushes. It was a perfect place to hunker down and wait. In the gray light of early morning, he pulled out his favorite filleting knife and a small whetstone, spat on the stone, and began to slide the knife back and forth across the surface. Falling into a rhythm, eyes half closed, he continued to hone the knife, metal caressing stone again and again. His excitement rose as he thought about the damage the razor-sharp edge was going to do, slicing deep into tender flesh, and releasing spray after spray of coppery-scented blood into the air. He smiled, already hearing the terrified pleading and the screams that would follow.
The soft noise of blade on stone kept him company as time passed. At last, morning broke in full, and spilled pink and gold daylight into the world, but his thoughts were not on the beauty of the new day opening in front of him. Instead, his hatred morphed into a cold fury as he thought about the full extent of the treachery committed against him, and the bloody revenge he planned to extract.
Lloyd crouched low in the bushes, peering at the little cabin in the clearing. This is what she chose to do with his money? Hide out on a deserted hillside in a stinkinโ little wooden shack that looked like it should have belonged to the Beverly Hillbillies, before they struck it rich? God, he could kill the bitch. โOh, thatโs right,โ he said. โIโm going to.โ

An excellent post on Story Empire today. If you write suspense in any form, you’ll surely pick up some great tips. Check it out, and don’t forget to share from their site. ๐
Craig here again, and the topic this time is writing suspense. Staci posted a wonderful piece about horror back in October. This inspired a great friend of ours, Sue Coletta, to write some suspense techniques over at her blog. I encourage you to check it out here. I mentioned that I was considering this for my next post here. Sue encouraged me to do it, because my techniques are different than hers are. And here we are.
So how do you go about writing suspense into your stories? Iโll tell you next month. Thank you, thank you, Iโm here all week.
Bad jokes aside, that is actually one way to include suspense. Itโs a process of baiting the reader, but withholding the information. To write this, Iโm going to refer to a living document I have on the very topic. Like many of you, Iโm a writing student asโฆ

One of my sister authors at misterio press is doing an all-at-once release of a new trilogy. Thought you all might be interested in how she’s doing it.

Call it the age of Netflix.
Itโs spoiled us for the wait โ no longer do we have to hang on an aching seven days to find out what comes next on our favorite TV show. With shows produced by Netflix, we can now binge watch the entire season over a weekend. (And yes, Iโm guilty of this โ Longmire! Stranger Things!).
So when I heard about โbinge reading,โ I decided to take the plunge with my new Doyle Witch cozy mystery series. Fortunately, my patient editors at misterio press were willing to take this journey with me, because a lot ended up happening in a short span of time.
The concept is simple โ launch all the books in the series at once… Read More

First of all, I’d like to thank Marcia for the chance to post on her site. ย I really appreciate yourย support of other writers, Marcia. ย So here’s my post:
Iโm excited to announce that PAIRS AT NATIONALS, the second book in my Pairs on Ice series, is now out and available on Amazon.ย In this book for tweens, Jamie Bartlett, 13, and her partner Matt OโConnor, 15, have just won a gold medal at the sectional competition.ย Now they are psyched to win gold at the National Championships.ย But then an accidentย changes everything. ย Jamie and Matt are forced to skate at a new rink with a new coach. With skating as the backdrop, this book lets the tween reader (and older one, too) feel the struggles of training, the thrill of competition, the pain of bullying, and the power of family and friends.
For the next ten days you can download the Kindle book for only 99 cents.ย So now is the time to buy.ย Youโll not only have a fun book to read or give to your favorite tween, but youโll help me achieve a higher ranking on Amazon.ย Why does this matter?ย Because Amazon gives more attention to books with high rankings,ย such as including a book in their โyou might also likeโ suggestions.ย ย In addition, once a book receives fifty reviews, Amazon will actually help promote itโand thatโs especially important to indie authors (like me) who donโt have a big publishing house behind them.ย ย So . . . if you decide to download Pairs at Nationals and enjoy it, Iโd appreciate a review.ย It doesnโt have to be longโjust a few sentences is fine.
To find Pairs at Nationals, you can go to my blog at www.elizabethvollstadt.blogspot.comย or click on the link under the cover picture.

Hereโs the first chapter.
PAIRS AT NATIONALS โ Chapter 1
Jamie counted to the music as she circled the rink. Five . . . six . . . seven . . . At eight, she tightened her muscles and leapt. One, two, three rotations, then a smooth landing as her right blade touched the ice in a flowing glide. A perfect triple Salchow! Even better, she could see Matt coming out of the jump in perfect sync with her. They were awesome!
She skated over to Matt for a high five. It was hard to believe that when they started skating together last year, they couldnโt stand each other. Now he was her best friendโor second best. No one could replace Nicole. She had been Jamieโs best friend since their first time on the ice when they were six years old. Jamie looked across the ice. Nicole gave her a thumbs up before setting up for her own triple Salchow.
โSo, what do you think we should do next?โ Matt asked. But he wasnโt looking at Jamie. His eyes swept the rink.
Jamieโs eyes followed his. โWhere is he?โ she muttered. Cam was almost an hour lateโand he was never late, not once in the whole year and a half he had been their coach.
โGot me,โ Matt said, as if she expected an answer.
Jamie scanned the rink again, hoping she had somehow missed Cam. But no, all she saw was a kaleidoscope of skaters jumping, twirling and gliding over the ice. Cam wasnโt anywhere to be seen . . . but . . . what was her father doing here? He was standing by the bleachers talking with Bob, the rink manager. They both looked serious.
Her dad glanced up and his eyes met Jamieโs. He waved her over. โGet Matt, too,โ he called as she started skating toward him.
She turned, but Matt was right behind her. They stepped off the ice. โWhatโs up?โ Jamie asked. She grabbed her skate guards from the shelf around the rink.
Her father touched her arm. โLetโs go sit in the bleachers. Iโm afraid I have bad news.โ He turned to include Matt. โThereโs been an accident. Camโs in the hospital. They took him to surgery as soon as he got to the ER.โ Continue reading

Atย my recent workshop, I met a man who is ready to publish an oversized book with lots of color illustrations. I’ve heard there are better options for this type of book than CreateSpace. Have any of you had experience doing this, or heard of other Print on Demand sites thatย would be better choicesย for this type of thing? I’d like to be able to offer that info when I’m doing self-publishing workshops, and to pass it along to this gentleman, in particular. Since I work solely with CreateSpace, and do nothing with illustrations, etc, I’m clueless, andย don’t want to lead him astray. Thanks for any info you can share!

Our friend, D. G. Kaye, has a great FREE promo running now. You should check it out, for sure, and share with all the usual suspects. I’m sorry I can’t reblog from her site, but just click here, and see for yourself! (And while you’re there, download your free copy!)
