#FirstLineFriday Last Clue!

I said this one would be trickier. Little did I know. Sorry. I promise something easier next week! 🙂

In my first clue, I told you this was a classic story of war, but I didn’t mention it was a classic story about an exclusively American war. Think about that a minute, and hopefully, it will give you a nudge in the right direction.

Good luck! 🙂

#FirstLineFriday Winner’s Circle

I’m going to post today’s winners here as they email me, and we have our first one! Mae Clair has answered correctly, and will receive a download for herself or someone else, or a credit for a download for my next release.

I have four more prizes to give away, before closing the contest at noon, so the rest of you? KEEP THINKING! 😀 And Good Luck!

#FirstLineFriday Clue #1

Decided to take pity on your guys and give you a little clue. The answer to today’s quiz is considered a classic look at war. Many of us read this in high school, I’m sure. Think harder. Dig back! 🙂 I’ll give you another clue at 11:00, if I haven’t received some answers by then.

I knew it would be trickier than last week’s but I did think a few would have ventured a guess by now.  Good luck! 🙂 ❤

#FirstLineFriday – #Giveaway – #FreeDownloads

It’s #FirstLineFriday time again! Last week was a learning experience for me, but I think I’ve worked out most of the kinks. For full instructions, you may click the Rules & Instructions link in the black header bar at the top, but here it is in a nutshell: I’m about to give you the opening line from a famous/popular/well-known book. If you recognize it, EMAIL me at marciameara16@gmail.comNO answers here, please–with the title of the book and the author’s name. (No Googling allowed.) The first 5 correct emailers win a free download of one of my books. It’s that simple.

The contest runs Friday mornings from 8:00am to 12:00pm (noon) EST. At noon, I will close submissions, and announce the winners. If you already have all of my books, you can either gift your prize to someone else, or collect a credit for a free download of my next book.

One more previously unbeknownst to me detail: Amazon will not let me gift a download to anyone not living in the United States, but will that stop our fun? NOPE. I will happily send you winners abroad a Mobi or PDF file of your book of choice, either of which can be read on Kindle.

So. All that being said, are you ready? Today’s might be a bit trickier, so put on your thinking caps and let’s see how you do:

“The cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fogs revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting.”

Don’t Forget! Tomorrow is Our Second #FirstLineFriday Trivia Quiz!

Just a quick reminder that I’ll be running our new #FirstLineFriday Trivia Quiz from 8:00am to 12:00pm (noon) my time (Eastern Standard Time). It’s easy, quick, and a chance to win a free download of one of my books (your choice).

If you recognize the opening line of the day, just EMAIL me with the title and author, and win! And great news! For some of the future quizzes, you’ll have a chance to win free downloads of books by other authors, as well. More on that as it develops!

Just be sure to check the post early and get your answer emailed to me as soon as you can. First five correct answers win!

Honor system, please. No Googling!

See you in the morning with an opening line I think might be a wee bit tricky. Prove me wrong if you can! 😀

A Word About Research

Some great tips on resources for research from Staci Troilo today. I found it very helpful, and I think some of you will, as well. Check it out and pass it on, if you can. Thanks, and thanks to Staci for these suggestions. 🙂

researchCiao, amici! I should be writing, but I  took a break after I got sucked down the world’s largest rabbit hole.

Research.

I don’t mind doing it. In fact, it’s probably kind of a sickness, but I actually enjoy it.

Most of the time.

Not so much when what I need isn’t available anywhere.

Queue the one resource I think we all tend to forget. PEOPLE. I’m pretty lucky. So far, I haven’t found a topic that I couldn’t conquer with a quick search on the web or a call to family and friends.

#ShareAReviewDay Tuesday – “Simple” by Anita Dawes

This afternoon, I’d like to welcome Anita Dawes to The Write Stuff. Anita is sharing a review of her novel, Simple, and I know you’ll enjoy reading this one. Don’t forget to share among your friends on social media, thanks!

REVIEW:

Amy Miller
5.0 out of 5 stars Life’s Choices
20 October 2018 – Published on Amazon.com

Simple is a story told by a young girl living in the woods with her family, which is made up of mostly harsh characters, who are contrasted by Simple, and then later Amber. It’s a story of love and loss and family and living with the decisions we have made. I had a very hard time putting this book down. I got the majority of it read in one day because I just had to know what all the mystery was. It snags you right away, and holds you tight for the ride. There were some harsh moments in the book, as well as some gems that made me think about life. Overall, what a great book! Well written characters, good depth of detail, and a driven plot.

BLURB:

SHADES OF DELIVERANCE MEETS THE WALTONS…

Simple’s life is a painful nightmare.
He is one huge bear of a man, but with the heart and mind of an innocent child. He suffers terrible abuse from his vicious and uncaring backwoods family.
Together with his half-sister Leanne, they are hunted like wild animals and suffer the terror of nearly being burned alive as they try to escape.

Author Anita Dawes

Hi, my name is Anita and although I am over 70, I am by no means a ‘silver surfer’. I have been writing fiction for a while now but never been picked up by the mainstream publishers. They all loved what I wrote, but said it was hard to slot them into a category!  It came tantalisingly close with Bad Moon, but no cigar, as they say.

When I retired, and with the help of my sister-in-law Jaye, I decided to dust off some of my manuscripts and try to achieve the impossible.

I am a paper and pencil girl. You could chain me to a computer for years and nothing would happen! Jaye is managing to cope with it, but then she has much more patience than I do.  (She is as stubborn as a mule, which helps!)

They say you are never too old to learn, but in my case never is another word for infinity!

#ShareAReviewDay Tuesday – CrossFire by Jaye Marie

This morning, please help me welcome Jaye Marie to The Write Stuff. Jaye is sharing a review of her book CrossFire, and I know you’ll enjoy reading this one. Please don’t forget to share far and wide, too, thanks! 🙂

REVIEW:

MegaReader
4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for an entertaining read
15 October 2018
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase

The book begins with the mysterious murder of DI David Snow’s colleague, mild-mannered Detective Jim Harris, killed by a strange injury to the head. Snow is determined to find his friend’s killer, and grudgingly accepts the help of Jim’s replacement, the enigmatic Ruth Winton, who has her own reasons for wanting to work with Snow. Ruth seems efficient at problem-solving, but Snow dislikes ‘Ruthless Winton’ for reasons he cannot seem to put a finger on.

Meanwhile, other deaths are occurring that Snow realises might be connected to his friend’s murder. Snow must work fast to catch the killer (or killers) before they strike again.

This book kept me turning the pages to the end, and I was interested enough to find out who had killed Jim Harris. All the characters were nicely fleshed out too, and the tension built as I read on. There were some minor editing errors however, and so I cannot give it a full 5 stars, but am happy to give the book 4.5 stars for an entertaining read.

BLURB:

DI DAVID SNOW HAS ANOTHER KILLER TO CATCH, a killer a mysterious as the crimes he commits.

Betrayal and lies come to the surface as Snow struggles to find the truth, but is he looking in all the wrong places?

Can Snow outwit the killer, or will the truth cost him his life?

Author Jaye Marie

My name is Jaye Marie, the genius ‘oily rag’ and one-half of the establishment http://jenanita01.com.  I usually prefer to stay in the background, but that is beginning change.

Since we decided to publish our books ourselves, most of my other interests have had to take a back seat. I am an avid Bonsai collector and my tiny trees demand a lot of my attention in the growing season, or they will die. (it is just like having children)

I prefer to be busy, although I did think that now I am over 70  I might be able to relax a bit more, but I don’t think I can for I am far too nosey. I love exploring all the wonderful writing possibilities and trying something new. I make all these plans in my head, knowing I will probably forget most of them, but I can’t help it.

For someone who loathes computers with a passion, and I suspect this is mutual, I have managed to master the beast to some extent, but there is still so much I don’t know. As long as there is life in this old body, I will keep trying, and you never know, our books might just make the bestseller list one day!

It won’t be for the lack of trying, believe me!

A Word or Two on Headers

Getting ready to head off for a presentation at Enterprise Museum on “Those Squirrely Guys,” but I wanted to take a minute first to thank you all for the terrific emails I got yesterday on our new Friday feature. I think this is going to turn into something fun, even for those not interesting in winning free books. 😀 You guys rock!

And I also wanted to mention the latest header at the top of the page. I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I change them pretty frequently, because, why not? I have the power! And the same old picture bores me after awhile, so I switch, just for “pretty.” The header above has special significance for me, though, because my daughter took it.

Erin & family have lived in Charleston for the last few years, but decided to relocate to Denver. They rented their house, packed up all their belongings, and hit the road, determined to make the drive west one they’d never forget. They’ve been on the road for 3 weeks, camping at some gorgeous places, and visiting many of America’s most beautiful locations. My favorites so far have been Niagara Falls (which I visited many years ago) and Mt. Rushmore, which I’d dearly love to see. But it was the pictures of the Badlands, themselves, that amazed me the most. I never expected them to be so beautiful.

Now I won’t say they look like a place I’d want to live–which might be why you see no housing developments in the immediate vicinity 😀 –but they are utterly gorgeous. So for the next few days, you’ll have those stunning rock formations with the colorful striations to enjoy. After that, who knows what I’ll put up. I have a plethora of images to choose from, stretching all the way across the country.

Enjoy! 🙂

#FirstLineFriday Submissions are Now Closed & We Have Winners!!

Wow, it has been interesting seeing how my new idea worked for today’s trial run, and I’ve already made a list of ways it can be better by next Friday. A tweak here or there will make it smoother on both your end and on mine. I will be posting mid-week to let everyone know how it’s going to work going forward, so you can all mark your calendars. That way, you’ll not miss out on getting your answers to me. More on this later. But not to worry. I really want to make this a fun thing each week, and I WILL figure out the best way to do that, so no one misses out.

Thanks for the great response so far. Our winners are: Harmony Kent, Staci Troilo, Jeanne Owens, Deborah Jay, and Bill Engelson. Jeanne, Debby, and Bill, email me with your book of choice, and let me know if you want it sent to you, or to someone else.

THANKS so much for playing. Have a nice night, everyone!

Huh? What’s that? Some of you would like to know the answer???  😀 Okay. I suppose I can give you that. 😀

*ahem* “It was a pleasure to burn” is the opening line of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. One of my favorite authors, btw, and a most excellent book. 🙂

Next week’s challenge might be harder. It might be easier. Depends on which one I pick. The post will go live at 8:00am, and submissions will close at noon, which I think makes it 1:00pm to 5:00pm in the U.K.  Mark your calendars. And keep an eye out for a mid-week post with more details. Got some ideas for ways to make it all even more fun.

Stay tuned for more, and whatever you do, don’t touch that dial! 😀
