10 Things Writers Need To Stop Doing

I saw this and thought it was so true. Write on, people. Write on!

Nate Philbrick's avatarYou Write Fiction

I’m going to be brief and to the point today. This is a message for every writer out there, myself included. You need to stop…

…Defining success by number of book sales.

…Pressuring yourself to always write well.

…Assuming no one wants to read your work.

…Writing what everyone else is writing just to feed the market.

…Doubting your own talent, skills, and dedication.

…Equating a missed quota or wordless day with failure.

…Getting pulled down by bad reviews or negative criticism.

…Paying attention to unwarranted opinions on what you should or shouldn’t write.

…Trying to write stories and characters that will please everyone.

…Finding excuses to not get back to work and finish that story.

You’re better than all of that. Keep calm and write on, friend.

Poetry Month: Things Not As They Appear

April is National Poetry Month. I’m celebrating with Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day Challenge. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This poem is from the sixth, and the theme is things-not-as-they-appear.

Camouflage

Be wary of figures of speech

they aren’t what they seem

Metaphors lurk

in murky swamps of text

a moss covered log

that with a snap

is revealed as an alligator

Similes are less bold

like a horse with a plastic horn

that knows it isn’t a unicorn

but would like to pretend

otherwise

Beware of figures of speech

they’re keeping an eye on

you

Poetry Month: Secrets

April is National Poetry Month. I’m celebrating with Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day Challenge. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This poem was from the second, the topic: secrets.

Blossom

The best kind of secrets

are the ones you are waiting

to share

that blossom warm and bright

in your heart

and make you smile

for no reason at all

because you know something

no one else does

yet.

Tell me those secrets

I will share your smile

and we will be twice as incandescent

together

The worst kind of secrets

no one wants to share

pain

shame

guilt

like an anchor

dragging you down but you have to

tread water and smile

because you want no one to know

Tell me those secrets

I will cry with you

and help you chip at the chains

holding you down

one day you will break free

You can escape alone

but you don’t have to

Tell me your secrets

and I’ll tell you mine

Poetry Month: Resistance

April is National Poetry month. I’m doing Writer’s Digest’s Poem a Day contest. I’m sharing a few of my favorites. This is from Day 1, a poem about resistance.

Negated

There’s a

no

in my heart but not

on my lips

You asked for something I wasn’t

willing to give but you didn’t

wait for my answer

You assumed it had to be

yes

My smile is a double agent

a carefully constructed lie

I drag my feet and hope you change

your mind

If you don’t

there will come a revolution

Happy Pi Day!

Happy Pi day! As a special bonus, you can celebrate at 3/14/15 9:26:53, for extra digits of pi.

Fresh Pi

It’s a small

holiday,

celebrated by those who

care about the

circumference

of a circle, but

the one for

next

year will be special!

Not just 3/14

but

3/14/15, a rare occurrence.

And I think

two

extra digits of that

endless number is

well

worth waiting for, as

is having a

slice

of sweet fresh pi.

Poetry: Dictionary

Sometimes it’s fun to make a poem into a certain shape–so long as you don’t pick a shape that’s too complicated.

It grows, the tree

Each leaf, each branch

is cluttered with lots of little words

that

to blanket the ground

The Write Stuff

May your year bring you all sorts of inspiration, success, and most of all, happiness.

The Write Stuff

If they ask whether you have

the right stuff–

the answer is

yes.

If you’re full of panic,

doubt and worry and frustration,

if you hesitate and erase,

stare at a blank page for hours

until a dull throbbing echoes

through a mind empty of words,

and you couldn’t feel more lost–

the answer is still

yes.

Because you have a fine mind

that can overcome obstacles,

an imagination that paints a picture

unlike any other,

and no matter how long

the paths winds,

or how steep the hills,

your craft will only improve

from the journey.

One step isn’t enough,

or one thousand,

but each step makes you stronger.

So can you write

whatever is right?

Yes!

Color Poem: Carnelian

And since I’m sharing more complex color poems, I thought I’d share an older one, just to make sure the day is sufficiently colorful. A nice warm poem, for everyone braving the cold.

Carnelian

An earthy blanket of rich chestnut mulch

neatly bound

by a ring of eggshell and gray-dappled limestone blocks

under a robin’s egg sky

Sun warmed and drowsing

glossy emerald leaves stretch out and up

toward that pale blue sky and inescapable light

anchored by thick gray-brown stems shading to

verdant hues

At the ends

red-tinged new budding curls of foliage

emerge

crowned by bright jewels

proudly lifted to entice passing bees

bright bold petal ruffles flushed carnelian

releasing sweet whispers

on the wind

Color Poem: Aubergine

“Oooh, aubergine! Oh, yes, please!! I dare you!!”–Marcia

It’s different from the other color poems I wrote, as it’s a bit more challenging, but hopefully it still brings some color to the blog. 😉

Aubergine

Another word for eggplant

and used to describe

that same shade

of reddish purple brown

which doesn’t resemble any egg

I’ve ever seen

(The name comes from white varieties

because language more often

than not

seems designed to confuse)

The glossy fruit

makes a tasty parmigiana

The color ornaments a variety of objects

bridesmaid dresses

flowers

paint and decor

both lovely, dark, and deep
