Do you usually offer pre-orders on your new books? If so (or not), you should check out John Howell’s Story Empire post today, and see what he’s learned. Very interesting stuff, indeed. As usual, please consider sharing this among your social media friends and groups so they can enjoy it, as well. Thanks, and thanks to John for sharing some info I was totally unaware of. Super post! π

Hi, SEers John here with you. Today I want to share some information I learned from Dave Chesson on pre-orders on Amazon. As you may know, Dave is the founder of Publisher Rocket, and he is one of the foremost experts on all things Amazon.

The question I want to answer is, do pre-orders help or hinder a book launch? Since Iβm getting ready to launch Eternal Road β The last stop, I did some research on the idea of whether or not pre-orders are a good thing.
Here is what I learned.Β Pre-orders work like magic if you are an author with the following attributes.
- You are famous
- You have a large following
- You are a marketing genius with an iron-clad launch plan.
I donβt fit into any of those categories. So, I am subject to some of the facts of life ofβ¦

Always happy to share, John. And this post might surprise a lot of folks, too. I know it did me. π

This has been the trend “Oh yeah. Do preorders. You’ll get a nice spike in the first 30 days of launch” Thanks, Marcia.

I think I’m glad I never decided to try one. By the time the book was done, I just wanted to get it out to readers as fast as I could. π It turns out that was probably the better move for me. π

I found this one really interesting – particularly as it affects all of trying to raise our profiles. Many thanks!

Me, too, Trish. I admit I’ve never been seriously tempted to do one, but I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that maybe someday, I’d try it, just to see how it went. Now, I think I may have unknowingly made a better choice for me. Oh, the things we learn! π

Very informative. I did a preorder with my new book and I’m planning a tour, so it will be interesting to see how that compares to previous launches. Great share, Marcia.

Glad you enjoyed it, Diana. I found it very enlightening, myself. I’ve never done a pre-order, so I don’t have any personal experience, but I have a feeling it probably wouldn’t work well for me, if this info is correct. You are in a different place in your writing career and better known than I, so it might be that it’s just the ticket for you. I hope it turns out that way, and will be interested if you decide to share your experience afterward.
Thanks for stopping by! π

Thanks Marcia. I’m trying harder this year, and it’s hard as an introvert/hermit to step outside the comfort zone.

Yep. You’re always encouraging us to stretch, Marcia. It’s how we grow, right? Experience is a great teacher.

Exactly right. I had an art teacher once who told us never to be afraid to fail at anything, because the only people who NEVER fail or those who never even try. I took that to heart. π
