How to open a link in a new Window – and why you should #Blogging

Hi folks – I see too many bloggers who risk losing their audience by NOT using this one simple step on their WordPress blog – don’t be one of them!
If you AREN’T already using this simple tool, skip over to the full post for easy to follow steps to keep your readers on YOUR blog.

We all want people to read our posts, don’t we? Why else would we devote so much time to blogging?

So in amongst your material, you include helpful links to other articles.

What you may not realise is that more often than not, once a reader clicks away from your page, they don’t come back.

Particularly if you’ve put a link fairly early on in your post, you may have inadvertently lost that reader to someone else’s blog.

Don’t get me wrong, sharing readers is great and part of the fabulous ethos of the community of bloggers and writers, but what if there was a way to keep your reader on your blog at the same time as sharing someone else’s post?

Well, strangely enough, there is!

I learned this way back when I first started my extensive research before ever dipping my toe into the deep water of indie publishing and blogging…

  1. So glad you shared this post here, Debby. I agree, too many people don’t know to do this, and even as visitor to a site, I’m not happy when clicking on a link takes me to another one, instead of opening in a new window. I’m usually not done with what I’m reading when I decide to check out a link, and it’s so much better if I don’t get taken away from the site. You’re right. Sometimes I don’t make it back there, again. 😦 Better not to send your visitors away, and it’s SO easy to do. 🙂

    • That’s really what prompted me to write this post – I find it really annoying when I click on a link and get taken away from the site I really wanted to stay on. Sometimes it can end up being half a dozen clicks to get back there, by the time you’ve followed other links and I might not be bothered by then.
      NEVER send your visitors away.

      • Amen, Debby! That’s like sending your friends, or potential customers, off to another party. Once I saw that option when adding a link, I knew that was a better way to go. But unlike me, you were smart enough (and nice enough) to share the info with everyone. To make up for never having thought to do that, I’m sharing you post everywhere I can. 🙂

  2. Yes! I have a post about this. It’s so important to open that link in another window! I see this all the time. I keep clicking and, eventually, I can’t get back to the original post. Or I have to click “back” a few times and reopen the link in another tab.
