Question About Amazon/Kindle

Okay, this is for authors and readers, both. Anyone who uses a Kindle or Kindle app. Why is it whenever I edit one of my own Kindle books, I can’t get the new version on any of my devices? I delete the OLD version from the device, and I delete it (supposedly) permanently from the Cloud. Then I BUY a brand new version, download it, and it is the same version I had to start with. Every single time. After two years, I still can’t get the edited version of Wake-Robin Ridge on my Kindle.

What am I doing wrong? (Forget that part about checking the box to allow updated versions of books to automatically be sent to my Kindle. It has never worked on ANYONE’s book that I’m aware of.)  After uploading Finding Hunter a couple days ago, I discovered some wonky formatting going on that had NOT shown up on the Previewer. I fixed it, uploaded it, but have no way to tell how it looks on my own Kindle Voyage, because they merely sent me back my original purchase. ?????

Anyone else have this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Hey Marcia, hope you’re healing nicely. If you log into your Amazon account on the web and click on Manage Your Content and Devices it will open up every book you’ve ever purchased or downloaded for free. On the right hand side of the list there is a column with buttons that say “Update Available” when there is an update. Click that button and then refresh your Kindle/App and the updated version should appear on your device.

    • YOu know…I go to that page all the time to delete stuff I don’t want, and I’ve never noticed that on the right. I’m always looking at the left, I guess. DOH! I’m going over there RIGHT NOW to see if it will update Finding Hunter for me, with the formatting changes I made yesterday. THANK YOU a million times, Jenny! I should have known you’d know! 🙂

    • I was thrilled to find this out, too, D.G. Trouble is, it didn’t work. There was NO such place on my page. 😦 Aimee Easterling says you have to jump through hoops to get amazon to do this for you. Deborah Jay says (in Britain) they have no issues at all, and it’s all automatic. Either way, I still can’t get updated copies of my own books. I’m going to call about this one of these days, and insist they send me the corrected versions. Geesh. Is that so much for an author to want?

  2. Hmm, ok, just visited my kindle. And there isn’t a column on the right like you said, but I went into my settings and copied this for you here, : ” Opt in for automatic book updates to receive new versions of your books when we have confirmed that improvements have been made. In order to keep your notes, highlights, bookmarks and furthest reading location in the new version, ensure that all your Kindle devices and reading apps have the ‘Annotation Backup’ setting turned on.”
    Mine is turned on, is yours? Yes, Deb is a friend of mine and I often ask her if some things with amazon are the same on her end. That’s how I discovered your blog from her blog 🙂 Thanks for asking me about excerpts. I’ll be publishing my newest book tomorrow! Sure I’d be thrilled to have a little something up on your page.     • Thanks for trying to help, D.G. I do have it all turned on, but still, nothing. 😦 I just don’t know what else to do. I’ve never, ever had any book from anyone update when edits have been made. And I can’t update my own, no matter what I do. *sigh* The next time I call amazon with a problem, this is going to get covered in the same call, and when I have any kind of good answer, I’ll share it here.

      Oh, I’m glad to know you found me through Deb. She’s been a big supporter since I set this blog up about 9 months or so ago. I appreciate her greatly! 🙂

        • And nice to meet you, as well, Debby. Looking forward to your posts. It’s good to know I’m not the only one with this problem. Not that I wish it on YOU, you understand, but just that I was beginning to wonder if Amazon just had it in for ME. 😀 Seriously, if I ever get an answer, I’ll get back to you. As Aimee Easterling commented on another thread about this issue, it might be a matter of jumping through all kind of hoops to get the situation fixed. But it shouldn’t be. Especially with your own books. I’m quite disappointed in that, though overall, I’m happy with the publishing process and how things work for Kindle and CreateSpace.
