Black Friday & Other Sado-Masochistic Endeavors

Are They Having Fun Yet?

Do you participate in the madness? Me, I’d rather have spiky bamboo shoots shoved under my fingernails! They’d have to be giving away cars and jewelry for free, and throwing in a dinner date with Chris Hemsworth, as well, before I’d fight the Mall Mobs and Sale Seekers today.  I guess I just don’t want anything that much. I’m going to put up one of my Christmas trees, instead. (Yeah, there are several to be done, and while I hate shopping, I LOVE Christmas!) And Mark will get started on the outside lights. And oh, yeah…I have a BOOK to be finished, if I want it out in January, which I do, so there will be writing going on, also.

What are YOUR plans for Black Friday? Inquiring minds wanna know.

  1. For anyone who is actually thinking of shopping today, I’d suggest going between 9 and 11 a.m. That’s when things will clear out as everyone’s Thanksgiving bowel movement hits, and the only pandemonium taking place will be in the public restrooms.

    • It’s always…interesting…to see what your perspective is on any issue, Young Ned. I can count on you to come up with things the rest of us would never have even considered. (Your mind works in mysterious ways!) I’ve noticed many of those things center on bathrooms. (Especially around your office. See, I’ve been paying attention!) Have to admit, your advice here makes a certain amount of sense–but I still think I’ll avoid the stores. Getting run down by a frenzied horde racing for the restrooms would be just as unpleasant (possibly more so) than being run down by desperate shoppers, willing to kill or maim to save a few bucks here and there. 🙂

Hope all is well with you, and you’re getting in the holiday spirit! Deck the halls!!

  2. You’re probably right, Ned.
I’m with you, Marcia. We’re putting up our Christmas decorations today, too. You won’t catch me out shopping today. Besides, I’d rather shop online, anyway.

    • HI, Evelyn! Yeah, online shopping RULES!! No crowds, no fighting in the aisles, no aching, tired, swollen feet and ankles at the end of the day. And the best deals ever! 🙂 Win-win-WIN!

I’ll be putting up Christmas decorations today, tomorrow, and for the next ten days, at least. It normally takes me 10 days to 2 weeks to get the inside of my house done. I’ve been collecting for over 50 years, and I have managed to amass over 300 Santas, in addition to everything else. 😯

I love doing it, but I know in the next couple of years, I’m going to have to cut back drastically. I won’t have the energy to do as much as I’ve always done. But my grandson will be here in 2 weeks, and I want the house to be splendiferous for him, even though he’s only 20 months old. He’ll still enjoy it, I think. And my 9-year-old granddaughter does, too. She has a special Wizard of Oz tree she decorates when she’s here. I’ll have to share some pictures later. Maybe ask others to share a bit of their holiday traditions, too, just for fun. (It can’t ALL be about work!) 😀

    • Hi, Jackie! Nice to see you here today. I’m with you. No crowds for me, if I can avoid it, and I usually find I can. Did I know you have a dachshund? If I did, I forgot it! Dilly is a great name for one, too. 🙂

  3. I wouldn’t have gone out were it not for those signed editions at the bookstore, but I have to say, it must depend on where you go. There were hardly any crowds at the mall in the morning, and only a few people sedately browsing books in the store.

The local artists fair I went to in the afternoon was more crowded, but still no fighting, shoving, or anything of the sort. Maybe the insanity only happens over big ticket items, like tvs, other electronics, and the must-have toys?

  4. Hi, Caitlin!

For sure, the big-ticket items are the worst. I mean, people camp out on the sidewalks all night for those. (I can’t even imagine!) But all of our stores are jammed. You can’t find a parking space in the parking lots of individual stores, and the mall is insane. I don’t even want to drive BY it. 😦

I’m glad you had a good experience, though. It’s nice when you can enjoy shopping. It actually used to be one of my favorite things to do. Christmas music playing, people being friendly, lights up in every store. I loved it. But that was then, and this is now. Now I have more fun browsing online, and I can cover a LOT more territory in less time. No waiting. Works for me! 🙂
