I mentioned in my last post that despite being up to my eyelids in NaNoWriMo word count, I am also in the midst of promoting my upcoming urban fantasy book, Siren, which is set to release on January 5, 2015. It’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon, so I’ve been working some new strategies for promotion to try and reach a wider audience before it actually goes live.
What I’m doing is certainly nothing new. A lot of authors I know, both indie and traditionally published, release little images like this, but promotion is often a huge pain, so maybe we don’t always put as much effort into it as we should.
I was really proud of how this turned out, and thought I’d share it with all of you.
Every Tuesday until January, I’m going to be releasing a new teaser image with a little snippet from the book on my website, my Facebook author page and a few other social media haunts I frequent from time to time. Here’s the first one.
I’d love to hear what you think! I’d also be delighted if you took a minute to share a few of your own personal promotion strategies in the comment section below!
I like it, and I really like your cover, too. I’d be curious to hear how preorder goes for you.

My cover designer is a rock star! I have some other promo stuff coming up to help pre-order sales, including a pre-order blog blast on December 5th. I will definitely let you know how it goes. I gave it exactly 2 months to gather momentum before it goes live. It’s been slow going, gradual increases here and there, but I think the whole pre-order option for indies is going to take some serious experimentation until we figure out the best ways to make it work for us.

This whole preorder concept is very interesting, Jenny! I can’t wait to hear more from you on how it’s working and what we can do here at The Write Stuff to help out, too. Of course, we’ll tweet, etc, but if you have anything more specific, let us know, so we can decide if it’s doable. We’ll help you. You’ll help us. Its a win-win. And we learn from each other in the process. Very exciting, all the way around.
Thanks for the great post, and I LOVE both your image and your Siren cover. Gorgeous! Would this image be considered a meme? I’m finding that word has a very loose definition for most people. 🙂 Whatever you call it, it’s a brilliant idea, and I’d love to do something similar with Rabbit’s book. And the best of luck to you as you get farther into the promo process. So glad you are sharing with us.

I love your excerpt — very tantalizing! And I’ll be curious to hear about your preorder experiences as well since mine have mostly been flops (which I need to post about soon). But I didn’t come up with an ingenuous way to keep people interested pre-release like you have!

It’s a learning curve. Every new book release something else is learned that makes promoting the next book even easier. I’ve got a whole host of tricks up my sleeve this time. I’m kind of scared. *bites nails*

What a great idea – love the tempter and the cover; I’m off to Amazon to pre-order – job done 🙂

Just pre-ordered but thought I’d make a point here – the tempter you’ve put above sold me on the book, but the actual blurb on Amazon would not have done it for me.
Just a thought…

Thank you, Deborah. Hang onto your Amazon receipt. I’m launching something special tomorrow for pre-orderers.
That blurb. It worries me. It’s been written and rewritten so many times. I may have to take another look at it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s much appreciated.

Oh I know how that is.
As it stands that blurb gives no hint of the magical glimpses in your teaser snippet, and sounds like a different genre altogether; more like a romance with a bit of a nasty mystery.

I agree 100%. I’m working with someone to see if we can get wrestle it into submission, try to display more of the urban fantasy elements.

Just a quick note, the blurb has been changed. My cover artist is also a blurb assisting goddess. Thanks again for your feedback, Deborah! It really is appreciated.

It’s a great idea and don’t feel like everyone knows a lot about promoting. Most of us favor the writing part. I know that I’d love to be finished when my book is published to move on to another story. Marketing is hard stuff. I really like your idea and the product is very professional and a real teaser. Great job!

Thanks, Evelyn. Promotions is a huge time suck. I would much rather spend that time writing more books, which they often say is the best way to promote your other books, but I think promotion for Siren is actually going to be a lot of fun.
