#Writing Prompt – Candlelight

candle fire

                  Hidden

The aging Diva primped for her grand entrance to the Christmas party she hosted annually. She reminded her assistant for the umpteenth time, to make sure the Grand Ballroom was to remain dimly lit — candlelight only. Her vanity dictated that she’d only be seen in best light.

The aging recluse hid within herself what she didn’t want to face in the mirror — the lines and wrinkles which marked her time on earth. As she entered the Ballroom, her flaws remained hidden to the crowd, but not to herself.

The Diva managed to conceal her face, ravaged with time, by wearing scarves and hats, and her signature cat-eye shaped sunglasses when she absolutely had to go out; trying her best to stay out of the limelight during the day. But certain social gatherings were expected, and obligatory.

As the evening progressed, a woman in an intoxicated state stumbled into the elegantly decorated sweet table. She was unaware that the jagged claws encasing the expensive diamond in the ring on her hand had latched on to the tablecloth in her passing stupor. As she continued to walk, without noticing, a thread remained attached to her ring causing the tablecloth to rip away from the table.

The disturbance captured the attention of the guests as the candles fell over and caught fire to an edge of the tablecloth and everything else flammable on the table. Pandemonium ensued, and in instinct, a guest dashed to flip on the lights.

The room was illuminated and the ornate chandeliers sparkled in all their glory. Guests and wait staff tossed pitchers of water at the spreading flames, and within moments, the fire was extinguished.

The Diva was nowhere in sight.

The Smell Of Cinnamon – October Writing Prompt with a difference.

If you will forgive me, I shall throw this prompt upon its head,

I rarely write prose or poetry, but I eat, sleep and live for books, so I found you three books all to do with cinnamon.

Cinnamon Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke, (Joanne’s books are all fun food themes in their titles)

11796251

April is a busy time for Hannah Swensen and her bakery; the warm weather makes folks in Lake Eden, Minnesota go wild for something sweet. When Hannah hears that the Cinnamon Roll Six jazz band will be playing at the town’s Weekend Jazz Festival, she’s more than happy to bake up a generous supply of their namesake confections to welcome the band to town. Before the festival even begins, tragedy strikes when the tour bus overturns. Among those injured is Buddy Neiman, the band’s beloved keyboard player. Buddy’s injuries appear minor, until his condition suddenly takes a turn for the worse – as in dead. Hannah’s no doctor, but she suspects that the surgical scissors someone plunged into Buddy’s chest may have something to do with it. Hannah isn’t sure just how she’ll unravel the mystery, but one thing’s for sure: nothing’s sweeter than bringing a killer to justice.

Cinnamon Toast and the end of the World by Janet E Cameron

Stephen Shulevitz remembers the end of the world. Two o’clock in the morning on a Saturday night in Riverside, Nova Scotia, when he realises he has fallen in love – with exactly the wrong person.

There are no volcanic eruptions. No floods or fires. Just Stephen, watching TV with his best friend, realising that life, as he knows it, will never be the same.

The smart move would be to run away – from Riverside, his overly dependent mother, his distant, pot-smoking father, and especially his feelings. But then Stephen begins to wonder: what would happen if he had the courage to face the end of the world head on?

Writing Challenge for October

challenge

Starting tomorrow, I think it would be a lot of fun to have a monthly writer’s challenge on TWS. We can always use a chance to excercise our creativity, right? Or should  I say “write?”

I plan to make this simple, and hope that a lot of you will enjoy taking part. At the beginning of each month, I’m going to post a list of writing prompts. You may use these in any way you like. Create a poem, a short paragraph or two, or an excerpt from a larger work.  Long or short, serious or funny, it doesn’t matter. This doesn’t have to go anywhere…or it could be a starting point for more, if you like. But for our purposes here, it’s just meant to be a fun feature to stretch our minds, and see how many ways the same words or ideas can be used.

This month’s prompts are:

Candles or candlelight
The colors orange and black
The smell of cinnamon
A racing heart
A cry in the night

Yes, they sound seasonal, which is what inspired my choices, of course. But you don’t have to use them in any seasonal way at all. For instance, the black could be a slinky little date dress, and the orange could be someone’s pet tabby.  You can use one or all of the prompts, but the more the better.

As always, you can promote your books at the end of your post, and include an author bio, or cover photos. If you are a regular contributor, feel free to post directly. If not, send me your offering, and I’ll put it up for you.  And we will, of course, ALL share your submissions via Twitter, Facebook, or our own blogs. And, ANYONE can take part, whether you’ve posted here before or not. The more, the better!

Whaddya say? Let’s have some writing fun. And you have the entire month to play with this. I can’t wait to see what your creative minds can do!  (Oh, and extra points to anyone who can make up a story featuring a big, green snake, and a chocolate frog! 😀 )
