Whew! We Were Spared!!

NOTE: Just after I posted this, Elsa made landfall near Cedar Key. (A good distance north of us. 65mph winds, and from the map, it looks as though Gainesville (where my son lives) is now being hit by those eastern bands. We are “officially” in the clear here.)

Just a quick note to let you know that Hurricane Elsa was once again downgraded to a tropical storm, and didn’t come ashore yet. It barely missed a direct hit on Tampa, apparently, and has continued northward up the coast.

Here, we were greeted by torrential rains  from one of the wicked eastern bands at 6:00am this morning , but any serious wind must have blown through overnight. Thus far, we seem to have escaped any damage, and I think my son & family did, as well, though an hour or two ago, they were getting a LOT of heavy rain. But nothing dire.

I believe we are out of Elsa’s reach now, unless she does a sudden U-turn, but please keep the folks still in her path in your thoughts and prayers. It can gain strength again before finally touching land, and even as a tropical storm, can cause a lot of wind and flood damage.

And a HUGE thank you for all the well wishes, prayers, positive thoughts, and encouragement. It really helped me deal with the prepareation and stress involved over the last couple of day. I’m going to try to catch up with some comments, but bear with me if it takes a while. In the meantime, I must say, you guys ROCK!

Hurricane Elsa Update …

Yep, it looks like Elsa will be a hurricane when it hits Tampa, which means those folks over there could have all kinds of things to deal with, even if it’s a mild hurricane, including possible storm surge, etc. And it definitely means we be getting the outer bands of the storm, so it might get pretty unpleasant over here, too. I’m hoping not, but there’s nothing to do at this point but to wait and see how it plays out. Will get back with you folks on the other side, which could be a day or two if we have much damage or lingering power outages. But I’ll let you know how we fared as soon as I can.

Thanks for understanding why I may not be able to take part in tomorrow’s Ten Things post, but again, I do hope you’ll enjoy it, regardless. And I’ll join in as soon as possible!

Thinking of everyone in the storm’s path, and hoping you ALL stay safe!

Tropical Storm Elsa Update

As you can well imagine, we’ve been tracking the progress of Hurricane/TropicalStorm/HurricaneAgain(?) Elsa since the trajectory began indicating we might take a hit from this one. On the plus side, it’s not a storm as significant as many we’ve lived through, including Hurricane Irma (which is the one that brought an enormous tree down on our house.) At least, not so far. It started as a hurricane, got downgraded slightly to a tropical storm with 70mph winds, and has now crossed over Cuba to enter the Gulf of Mexico. This is the point at which storms often build up strength again, and it looks like that might happen at any time now.

The storm is currently predicted to come ashore in Florida at Tampa (that big yellow dot in the middle of the pink area). The two blue dots represent Orlando, where Mark works, and Sanford slightly north of it, where we live. As you can see this projected path means we could get significant wind and rain, though nothing is certain. And it also looks like it could pass directly over my son’s home in Gainesville. So this is why we’ve been doing a lot of prep work, clearing up things in the yard that can become flying (lethal) projectiles, etc.

I’ve lived through many, many hurricanes during my life, sitting hunkered down in the living room all night, listening to loud thuds on the roof as limbs and debris rained down upon us. I’m not unduly afraid (generally) but I never, ever scoff at possible consequences. Especially after Irma smashed our garage and car. I’ve always been of the mindset to prepare for the worst, and pray for the best. Once we’ve done all we can to be ready, it’s out of our hands.

Thankfully, we just had the last of the dying laurel oaks removed from our property, so 100′ tall trees falling on us are unlikely, especially during a less powerful storm like this one appears to be. But then again, we didn’t expect our neighbor’s huge oak to fall on us, either.  (And when I say huge, I mean the trunk was about 6′ THICK, and the canopy engulfed our entire house, though the weight rested primarily on the garage, thankfully, or we wouldn’t still be here.)

The bottom line is, winds are expected to begin picking up today about 2:00pm, and the storm looks like it will come ashore at Tampa sometime Wednesday morning. Hopefully, it will still be a tropical storm and not a full hurricane, and the damage will be minimal to those in its direct path. But there is a high likelihood of power outages so if I disappear for a bit longer, that’s probably what’s going on.

I do have a Ten Things guest tomorrow, and I HOPE I’ll be able to access the internet so I can welcome her, but if not, I’ll join in the conversation as soon as possible.

Thanks, folks. Any and all prayers and/or positive thoughts will be greatly appreciated and welcome, and hopefully, Elsa will mind her manners and go on her merry way without wreaking too much havoc.

Stay safe, folks, wherever you are! See you on the other side!

#ReblogAlert – Sally Cronin’s Smorgasbord Weekly Roundup Post

Running a bit late this weekend, but here it is–Sally’s most excellent weekly roundup post. Be sure to stop by and see what you might have missed this week. You’ll be glad you did! 🙂

Check out Sally’s Smorgasbord Roundup Post HERE

And there you go, Folks! Happy Reading!

Happy Independence Day!

If I disappear for a day or two, you can probably blame it on Hurricane/Tropical Storm Elsa, which appears to be heading straight for us. The biggest question is, how strong will it be when it goes over our area. It has been losing some power, so we are hoping it will not gain back up to hurricane strength, and instead,  will get weaker and weaker–but you never know with these. If the “winds” of Fate are kind, I’ll see you on the other side! 😊

#Reblog Alert – This Week on Story Empire

Once again, Story Empire has presented a fabulous week of excellent posts. You’re gonna want to take a look at all of these, if you haven’t already done so.

MONDAY:  John W. Howell starts the week off with a great post entitled Writing Motivation Killers Are Out There — Let’s Discuss Three of Them. The title says it all, and believe me, you’ll want to check it out HERE.

WEDNESDAY: Joan Hall’s mid-week post, entitled simply Words, is full of interesting tidbits and is a lot of fun, especially if you are a lover of new words and coined phrases throughout history. Check it out HERE.

FRIDAY: Staci Troilo wraps up the week with a super post called Developing Your Villain. This one has some great tips even for those of us who don’t write murder mysteries, etc, because Staci explains how to strengthen the contrast between any character up to no good and the protagonist of the tale. Check it out HERE.

And there you go, folks! Great stuff, huh?

#ThorsDaySmile

The Emissary 1

BLURB

An angel’s work is never done—that’s part of the gig. But angels hadn’t been created to deal with such a vastly over-populated planet, rife with misery, suffering, and general chaos. Helping souls in peril has become a nearly impossible job, and even angelic tempers are frayed.

The archangel Azrael has had enough. He believes he’s found a way to ease their burden while saving jeopardized humans, too—hired help.

When Jake Daughtry lost his life rescuing a total stranger from certain death, he was on the fast track to Heaven. But that was before Azrael pulled him right out of line at the Pearly Gates. Now, as an Emissary to the Angels, Jake is taking to the highway in a quest to help souls in trouble. But the innate stubbornness of human beings bent on self-destruction is a challenge unlike any he’s ever faced.

It’s up to Jake and Azrael to bridge the gap between humans and angels. Will they ever convince the Council of Angels this endeavor is worthwhile? Can Jake figure out how to play by Azrael’s complicated rules? Will Azrael ever master the use of contractions in general conversation?

To find out the answers, hop on board Jake’s big red-and-white semi and travel the roads from the Florida Keys to north Georgia on an adventure that will make you laugh hard and cry even harder.

The Emissary 2: To Love Somebody

BLURB:

They’re back!

Jake and Dodger, the first (and so far, only) Emissaries to the Angels, are on the road again.

They’re looking for mortals about to take a wrong turn. You know the ones—the kid thinking about stealing from a corner market or the man planning to lie about a coworker and destroy her career. Yeah, them. People on the brink of making a mistake that could send them down that wrong road and jeopardize their mortal souls.

Of course, there are rules by which the emissaries must play, and the archangel Azrael stands ready to enforce them. First and foremost, a person’s free will must never be compromised. Emissaries are allowed to use only the smallest of mental nudges. Thankfully, a whispered suggestion here or images of a better course of action there is usually all it takes. The potential mugger walks on by. The thief drops the wallet back into the unattended purse. But whether the results are obvious or not, Jake and Dodger are fully committed to making a positive difference, even as they struggle with issues of their own.

Will Dodger get over losing his chance to learn what true love is all about? Will Jake survive the grueling angelic equivalent of Boot Camp? Will Azrael ever finish the Official Emissarial Guidebook—including the chapter titled Do Not Even Think About It?

One thing’s for sure—Jake’s and Dodger’s strengths are growing daily, as they help more and more people make better choices. But is the price for so much power higher than they’re willing to pay?

The Emissary 3: Love Hurts

BLURB:

Azrael’s emissary program was growing daily, but it still met with stubborn opposition from many on the Council of Angels. Dodger’s request to be allowed to experience what falling in love was all about didn’t help matters, but Azrael thought the boy was onto something. He agreed emissaries who’d shared a loving relationship during their mortal lives would have a deeper understanding of human emotions and motivations, thus enhancing the skills needed to do their jobs.

With that in mind, Azrael gave Dodger one chance to search for true love. He then laid down a daunting set of stringent rules and guidelines that could not be broken under any circumstances lest dire happenings occur. But while the angel sincerely hoped Dodger would find a way to make this endeavor work, he feared an avalanche of unintended consequences could be in store for his youngest emissary.

Sometimes even angels hate to be right.

Will Azrael ever tire of popping up behind Jake just to see his first emissary fall out of his chair in shock? Will sharp-eyed motel owners ever notice a big red-and-white semi mysteriously appearing and disappearing from their parking lots overnight? And will Dodger be able to track down the mystery girl who caught his eye two weeks earlier to see if she’s really The One?

To find the answers to these and other angelic or emissarial questions, come along on one last adventure with Jake, Dodger, and that ginormous, glowy-eyed archangel, Azrael. They’re waiting for you!

Author Marcia Meara

Marcia Meara lives in central Florida, just north of Orlando, with her husband of over thirty years and four big cats.

When not writing or blogging, she spends her time gardening, and enjoying the surprising amount of wildlife that manages to make a home in her suburban yard. She enjoys nature. Really, really enjoys it. All of it! Well, almost all of it, anyway. From birds, to furry critters, to her very favorites, snakes. The exception would be spiders, which she truly loathes, convinced that anything with eight hairy legs is surely up to no good. She does not, however, kill spiders anymore, since she knows they have their place in the world. Besides, her husband now handles her Arachnid Catch and Release Program, and she’s good with that.

Spiders aside, the one thing Marcia would like to tell each of her readers is that it’s never too late to make your dreams come true. If, at the age of 69, she could write and publish a book (and thus fulfill 64 years of longing to do that very thing), you can make your own dreams a reality, too. Go for it! What have you got to lose?

#GuestDayTuesday – #CoverReveal – #SarahBrentyn

I have a special surprise for you folks today! My friend, Sarah Brentyn, has not one but two beautifully redesigned  and elegant covers to share with you! But I’ll let her tell you the full story of how they came to be. And here she is:

~~~
I Don’t Know How Art Works
To me, art is magic. And I mean that literally. Obviously, figuratively, too, since all creative endeavors are magical. But it’s…I don’t know…weird. I just don’t get it.
Having these covers made was a long process. I asked many, numerous, countless, repetitive, stupid questions along the way. It wasn’t pretty. Like “How do you get the picture from your notebook to the computer screen?” And “What do you mean?” And, “How is that going to turn from a…line thingy…into a shaded flower?” And “What do you mean?” And “How are you going to make that lighter without making the other part darker?” And “What do you mean?” Fortunately, the artist I worked with is a saint with a great deal of patience. (Or, just as likely, sent kind inquiries and tolerant responses while screaming obscenities I couldn’t hear. Yeah. That’s super possible.)
I’m going to give you the sanitized version of how this all went down. (Believe me, this is for your own good.)
I didn’t know what I wanted.
Or, rather, I knew exactly what I wanted but had no idea how to express it. I don’t speak art.
So, when I tried to explain the idea, it sounded like Dr. Seuss on a bad day:
“I’d love to have a fringlehop around the juglifine. A circle ‘round the difentoot with wiscott and some bine.”
She asked if I could show her what I meant. That went well. It was like a two-year-old shoving a crayon scribble at you and expectantly waiting for applause for the amoeba-shaped blob that is obviously a cat.
After that, came more, ridiculous, relentless questions. Like “Can you move the thing over to where the other thing is?” And “What do you mean?” And “How about if that thing is closer to the other thing?” And “What do you mean?”
There was also a great deal of, “I don’t know how art works.” It became my mantra.
When the artwork was done, we needed to distress it. The images were too clean and pretty for my dark writing. Did I want the background distressed or the image itself? And what type of distressing? That, my friends, is another story.
For now, enjoy the beautiful artwork by the talented (and ever-patient) Loni Townsend. I hope you like the fresh, new look for my books!
Shoutout to the lovely Allie Potts for getting these covers into print-ready form so I could have my precious paperbacks (and for creating beautiful 3D images).
And … tada! Here are Sarah’s freshly redesigned covers for your viewing pleasure. Personally, I think they are gorgeous! Elegant and refined, and positively stunning. I suspect most of you will agree.
Now I ask you, was I right? I love both of these covers so much, I’d buy them just to put on easels on my bookshelves. But an even better reason would be because the writing is so very good. It’s a Win-Win! Check out these Blurbs!
