Sometimes my inspiration comes from the nearly overwhelming beauty of an Appalachian Spring. (Great name for a symphony, Mr.  Copland!)

And sometimes it comes from the close observation of the plants and wildlife of the
St. Johns  River, including basking alligators, and turtles like this one, which knows when the alligator’s hungry, and when it’s not.DSCN1991

    • I have a hard time deciding whether I prefer sitting on a slab of granite, gazing out over the ancient, rolling hills of Appalachia, or gliding silently down a Florida waterway in my canoe, watching life unfold around me. Both are fodder for my imagination, and my stories. 🙂 Glad they feel soothing and calming to you, Let’s. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙂

    • My first reaction was to tell you they are rhododendrons, which are one of the dominant native flowering shrubs in the mountains, but as I take a closer look at how low-growing they are, I think they might be azaleas. They are related, and have similar flowers, but rhodies grow much larger, towering high above the heads of hikers. There are some native azaleas in this area, too, so it’s not a stretch to think these might be some of them. I’ll see if I can pin it down better for you, but you’re definitely in the right ballpark. 🙂 Glad you like the pic. It’s stunning!

      • Okay, Linda, here’s what I found for you, in a quick Google. Azaleas and rhodies are related, as I knew. Specifically, all azaleas are rhododendrons, but not all rhododendrons are azaleas. 😀 Rhodies are bigger, taller, and have larger leaves, and they have ten stamens, where azaleas have only 5. (How good are your eyes? 😀 ) Because the leaves in this photo look smaller in comparison to the flowers than the leaves of most rhodies are, I’m going to guess that these ARE azaleas. Which means that they are ALSO rhododendrons. Hahahahahaha. I love it!

        If I were there, able to see them up close, I could tell, but from this angle and distance, it makes it tougher.
