While it’s still in the high 80s and low 90s down here in the Land of Sunshine, I’m in the mood to celebrate fall and Halloween, so here’s an offering from my book, Summer Magic: Poems of Life and Love. Hope you enjoy October Siege!
~~~
October.
The siege begins.
Enemies among us
Everywhere!
With evil grins,
They lurk,
They skulk,
They glare,
Sharp fangs bared.
October.
Hide inside.
Nighttime danger
Everywhere!
With shining eyes,
They menace,
They taunt,
They torment,
Mouths opened wide.
See how they glow!
Deadly, gap-toothed grins
Midst curves of vivid orange!
Silently screaming with devilish glee,
They lounge on nighttime porches,
And march up darkened drives.
Casting yellow light from watchful eyes,
They search for unwary victims,
For slow and easy prey.
Big ones, tall ones,
Skinny ones, or round.
Colored like the fiery sun,
Or the moonlight pallor of alien visitors.
They line up on fence posts,
Stair steps, and windowsills.
Peering out . . . or peering in?
Looking for who?
You!
October.
Watch your step.
They’re back again,
Everywhere!
With wicked intent,
They scheme,
They hunger,
They haunt,
Pumpkins on patrol!
Boo!
What a fun “siege” to read! Brilliant poem, Marcia! Love it!! Happy October to you. 👻🎃👻
Thanks so much, Gwen. I’ve written poems since I was five years old, only back then, I filled a yellow legal tablet with long poems about cowboys and horses and cats. 😀 So glad you enjoyed this one. I’ve been thinking about putting together another collection, since they don’t usually take me as long to write as a full-fledged novel does. Glad you enjoyed this one, and thanks for letting me know. 😀 ❤
So glad you enjoyed it, Jan. It was a fun one to write, but then again, I feel that way any time I’m writing poetry. I need to do more of it. MUCH faster than novels! 😁 Thanks for stopping by today! 😀 ❤
Thanks, Janet. Glad you enjoyed it, and my daughter just sent me pics of my 3-year-old granddaughter picking out a pumpkin in just such a place. We don’t have those so much down here. *sniff* I’d love to visit one again some day.
Thanks for stopping by and letting me know you enjoyed the poem! 😀 ❤
Our pumpkin farm was full of skeletons so I got plenty of photos for my blogs. My daughter-in-law picked one pumpkin as she wants to make pumpkin pie. As they are working away they dissected the pumpkin and my freezer is full of diced pumpkin until they are back. As we are English and have no idea how to make pumpkin pie she found a recipe on the internet. Looking forward to seeing what happens….
I have always been a lover of pie over cake or cookies, and pumpkin pie is my absolute favorite, followed by “real” Key Lime pie. Hope you find a great recipe! Good luck. (I don’t bake, happily, because if I learned how to produce these things, I’d soon not be able to fit through the front door! I’m just the designated pie eater, I’m afraid!) 😄
Ha! I love this. You get right into the Halloween spirit, Marcia. I’m going to have to carve a pumpkin now. Thanks for the smiles!
Aw, thanks so much, Mae. I’ve really been missing writing poetry, and think it’s something I’ll soon be taking up again. It’s fun, and FAST. Both of those sound good to me right now.
Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a moment to tell me you enjoyed this, and Summer Magic, too! 😃💗😃
