#TenThingsYouMayNotKnow – About Sue Rovens

Happy Wodin’s Day, everyone! Please join me in giving Sue Rovens a big welcome to The Write Stuff today. Sue is another brave soul who is sharing ten things about herself that we may not know, so without further ado, let’s get started. Take it away, Sue!

Ten Things You May Not Know About Me
by Sue Rovens

  1. After 30 years in Milner Library (at Illinois State University), I’ve finally retired!
  2. The Graduate is my favorite movie of all time.
  3. I love all animals…except spiders. They are headless monsters with too many legs.
  4. I collect old radios, clocks, and advertising signs (love retro stuff)
  5. I have a master’s degree in Kinesiology and Recreation.
  6. I don’t eat meat…except White Castle once a year. (mmm, sliders)
  7. I’m learning how to play French Horn.
  8. I love all things TEA!
  9. I don’t drink pop or coffee, ever.
  10. I’m “that person” who will point out cows, goats, sheep, and hawks on road trips.

  1. I love those people who point out animals on road trips. Seeing wild horses while driving through the mountains of Northern Spain was the most amazing and Sue would love it!! Congrats on your retirement. Happy writing.

    • Thanks, Darlene! Yeah, I’m still getting used to NOT having to be at work (it’s only been 4 months). It’s weird without a daily schedule (but I like it!)

  2. I’m with Sue on spiders, and I had to look up White Castle as we don’t have that here in Wales. It’s fascinating how these ten facts can bring you closer to an author – far closer than the blurb you get on Amazon, usually!

  3. We have a few things in common, Sue. IMO spiders are evil creatures who should be banished from the earth. I’m also a tea lover, hate coffee, and rarely drink a soft drink. I enjoyed getting to know you.

    • Hello! Nice to meet you too! I had a dream about 20 years ago that I could play french horn, so I figured…now that I’m retired, why not? It’s never too late. The cats are concerned, but I think they’ll be okay. 🙂

  4. That was a fun Top 10 list—although i admit I had to look up Kinesiology, LOL.
Most all insects make me shudder (with few exceptions), so I totally get the spider phobia. Nasty creatures! And although I won’t drink soda (as we call it in the north), I am a coffee drinker. Do I get points for loving tea, too? 😀

Thanks for sharing, Marcia, and wonderful to get to know you better, Sue!

    • Hi Mae! Yep, spiders do NOT get a pass with me. And yes, tea, in all of its wonderful iterations (hot, cold, matcha, oolong, etc) always gets points. 🙂

    • Normal, Illinois. Yep – two of my books are set in Bloomington-Normal (Track 9 and the new one, Rage). Thanks so much for reading. And YAY for animals!! (except the legged ones who shall not be named)

  5. How wonderful to meet this author! Sue is new to me and I will be checking out her work. I have a hard time relating to anyone who doesn’t drink coffee, but Sue may be the exception. 🙂 Thank you for sharing, Marcia!

    • Hi Jan! Thanks so much for the comments! 🙂 If I had to recommend a starting point for my books (depending on what you like), I think it would be Buried. That one appears to be a good “starting point” for folks.

  6. Thanks, everyone, for welcoming Sue today. I’m sure she’ll be along when she can, and in the meantime, I, too, discovered I have things in common with her. I drink nothing but tea and water. Nothing else at all. Earl Grey is my morning companion, though I have a huge collection of teas on hand. I hate spiders so much, I’ve included them in my official bio. (I figure anything with eight hairy legs is surely up to no good.) And yep, I point out animals alongside the road all the time. In fact, I used to lead canoe trips for Audubon, wherein it was my JOB to point them out.

I’m glad so many of you are enjoying this new series. It’s really a fun way to get to know each other better, and I hope to continue running it for a long time. So glad to have Sue here today! 🤗 ❤

    • Thank you SO MUCH for having me today, Marcia. It’s a joy to be here and share some tidbits about myself (and our communal hate against the legged things). I’ll be popping on here and there today and look forward to answering and connecting with your readers. 🙂

      • It was a pleasure to have you today, Sue, and I look forward to you coming back as a guest in the future, too. You gave us a great list of fun and interesting things to ponder, for sure. As for the spider thing, I no longer kill them, having learned to suppress my urge to bring in a 55-gallon drum of RAID every time I spot one, because they have an important role to play in the environment. However, I now let my husband handle my Arachnid Catch and Release program, so all is well. Inside, at least. 😁

Thanks so much for taking part in the new Ten Things series! 🤗 ❤

  8. Spiders are okay in my book, but snakes serve no purpose. The way they move about with no legs is just bizarre and freaky and I’ll move if I ever see one in my yard. Thanks for featuring Sue, Marcia! And I have to give a shoutout for Buried – just read it a couple months ago. If you’re a Fargo fan, this book’s for you.

    • Oh, now you’ve done it. Snakes are my favorites, and I’m so happy we have black racers in our yard. They eat mice, rats, and all sorts of disease-carrying critters, while carrying NONE themselves. So while I know some folks don’t like them, they really do serve a very important function. Heck, little ones eat ROACHES!! I’m always happy to see them patrolling the shrubbery. 😀

Okay, I’ll get off my reptile-loving soapbox, now. Truly, there aren’t many animals I don’t love.

Glad you enjoyed Sue’s Ten Things list. I thought it was fun and interesting. Thanks for stopping by! 😀

    • Thanks, Teri! I appreciate the shoutout for Buried! As I’m sure I mentioned somewhere, I don’t mind snakes (sneks!) – because of the sans legs. LOL. I think they’re kind of amazing. (And I finished Sarah – the review is up on Amazon – great read!! 🙂 )

      • Ooooh, anyone who loves (okay, “doesn’t mind”) snakes is okay in my book, Sue. I don’t even care (too much) that some people totally hate them. It’s the bashing perfectly harmless critters to smithereens that I really can’t stand. And I can’t even count the number of photos I’ve seen online with folks bragging about how they killed this deadly monster, and they’re holding up a totally harmless Brown Water Snake or the like. *sigh* One of my most popular talks I give is on Central Florida Snakes, wherein I share the very quickest and easiest ways to recognize at a glance if one of our snakes is potentially harmful or not. I “rerun” it every every year at both of my main venues and think it’s made a big difference to those who’ve been terrified of every snake, everywhere.

  9. Thank you, Sue, for sharing your list with us. I can relate to numerous items on the lisg – especially sharing information about animals, vegetarian diet, and retirement. I am a retired prof, too. (Humanities).

    • Hi Lynda!
Yes, I’ve been retired now for 4 months. I’m shocked at how I fit work into my normal daily schedule. LOL. I’m still looking for “downtime” to work on some short stories. Hasn’t quite happened yet…:)
