Time for another #FirstLineFriday folks, and today I’ve chosen something I suspect will pretty easy for many of you, though it could be challenging for quite a few, as well. Still, it’s a pretty good opening line, whetting one’s curiosity as it does. Hope you’ll enjoy it.
PLEASE READ these simple rules, just to refresh yourself on how this should be done. Thanks.
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at 4:00pm, with the title and author of the correct book.
- Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
- Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
- Submissions end at 4:00 P.M. EST, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
- Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any one of my books for themselves, or for someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of the offered books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
- Winners who live elsewhere may request a mobi or PDF file of the same books, since, sadly, Amazon won’t let me gift you from the site.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Put on your thinking caps, because here is today’s opening line:
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Remember, email answers only, please. Thanks! And now off I go to await your guesses.
Love this book!

I really tried to find one some of you would recognize instantly, and I’m guessing I did, since I awoke to four winners already. Looks like I might be ending today’s quiz early! 😀 Congratulations, Trish!! 🙂

It should be familiar to many, Gwen. I suspect if it doesn’t come to you, you’ll be giving yourself a head smack! Keep thinking, and Good Luck! 😀

I should know this one…

I cheated and now I know why I forgot. I’m probably one of the rare people who hated that book! 🙂

Yeah, I think you’re in the minority on that one, at least among folks who’ve actually read it. I’m sure a lot of younger readers haven’t, but I also felt this would be one where I’d finally have some winners. (Woke up to four, already, so I might be ending this contest early.) Thanks for playing, Joan, and sorry it didn’t come to you, so I could give you a book. LIKING the source of the isn’t necessary in order to win. 😀 😀 😀

I know but this one is a book I’d rather forget. 🙂

Ha. Well, it would appear that you got your wish. 😀 Sorry you didn’t like the book, but thanks for checking out the quiz today, anyway. Maybe next time it will be both familiar AND a favorite. 😀

That is so familiar but it’s escaping me right now.

Keep thinking, Jeanne. Though with four winners before I even woke up this morning, I may be closing the contest early. Good luck! 😀

Yay! And another winner! I’m so glad to be able to give away some books today, and happy to have you be one of the winners, Darlene. Super glad to know it was one of your favorites. I remember I liked it very much when I read it decades ago, but darn if I can remember many of the details, beyond the general premise. I need to RE-read some classics!! 😀 Congratulations and I’ve already emailed you. 😀

So familiar. I had to look it up, and yup, I read it 60 years ago. No wonder I couldn’t put my finger on it.

I read it during my Great Classics Binge year, when I was 12. I remember the general premise of the book and some character names, but details (like opening lines) are gone. I definitely need to re-read some of these great books. Sorry it didn’t come to you, John. Would have loved to gift you a book, and being a U.S. citizen, Amazon would actually have let me do so, rather than substituting a Mobi file. Try again in 2 weeks, though I confess, the pickings from my All Time Best Lines list are getting slim. There are still a couple of goodies, though. Thanks for giving it a try. 🙂

Doesn’t cost a thing to guess, John, and nobody sees the email but ME, so you’re safe. I won’t publicly ridicule you or anything. Honest. (Probably. 😀 )
