And now, here’s the answer to today’s quiz:
“Blue Sargent had forgotten how many times she’d been told that she would kill her true love” is the opening line from Maggie Stiefvater’s wonderful 2012 novel, The Raven Boys.
The Raven Cycle is a series of four contemporary fantasy novels written by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The first novel, The Raven Boys, was published by Scholastic in 2012, and the final book, The Raven King, was published on April 26, 2016. While categorized as a Young Adult novel, the book is far, far more than that–a beautifully written and well-imagined fantasy, with characters that pull readers in from the start.
WHAT AMAZON SAYS:
Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her.
His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.
But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.
For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn’t believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

That wraps it up for this week, folks. I hope you’ll give this one a try. Trust me. It’s worth it. Thanks again for taking part, and stay tuned for another #FirstLineFriday quiz next week. See you then!
Wow! Congrats to Sarah. Sounds like I better check this book for my 11-year-old grandkids…and me!

Oh, trust me. YA maybe, but I don’t know so many 11-year olds who’d really “get it.” I loved every single word of it, and devoured Books 2 and 3, but get this: I haven’t been able to read the final book. It’s lying on my shelf taunting me. But I developed this irrational fear that something bad is going to happen to Gansey, and I don’t want to know it. How totally dumb is that? I don’t even know if it’s true. Hahahahaha. I do intend to read it, I’m just chicken. (Even though I’ve read a lot of Stiefvater’s work and am pretty sure she’ll have chosen the “right” ending, even if it’s different from what I’d like.)
*going off now to be embarrassed for a bit* I take my favorite books (and characters) way too seriously. 😀

But that’s a good sign -#1 what a great author this is, to make her characters so real, and #2, what a great reader you are, to believe so much in the characters. xo
You’re right re I need middle grade for the 11 year olds – these books are YA. I’ll read them and then save for a few years. 🙂

You are too kind, but I appreciate it. I DO relate to my favorite characters totally, and they become part of me in some obscure way.
Young Adult (for my money) should be exactly the same as regular adult, only without the graphic stuff and language. In other words, it really shouldn’t be “dumbed down.” These are good books, period. If you try this one, I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. 🙂

Well done, Sarah. Not an author or series I’m familiar with. Another good opening line. xo

I was pretty sure of that, because a name like Blue Sargent would trigger your memory if you’d read these, I suspect. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed that opening line, though. It sure worked for me. 🙂 ❤

Well, Sarah and I both think so, and that should SURELY be enough proof for anyone, right? 😉 😀 Seriously, I think the books are terrific, but don’t take my word for it. Hope you’ll check for yourself, if you get a chance. Thanks so much for checking this out today! 🙂 Maybe next week will be one you know immediately! 😀

Just my own opinion for what it’s worth, Trish, but I think she’s very, very good. And this book has over 1500 reviews, with a 4.5 average. I could live with that. 😀 I’m glad you enjoy these, Trish, and if you check this one out, be sure to let me know what you think! 😀

Aha! I just purchased this book a couple of weeks ago and haven’t started it yet. I guess I will soon-ish. (So backlogged, ugh – a good problem to have these days).

What a great coincidence! And now you know how much Sarah Brentyn and I (among 1500+ others) loved it. I hope you will love it too, when you read it. The characters just pulled me right in and one at least, Gansey, would not let go! 😀 All were well-developed, though, and the plot is lovely, plus Stiefvater’s writing is excellent. Happy reading when you get to it! 🙂
