Another week gone by, and you know what that means. Another chance to try your hand at #FirstLineFriday, a little quiz designed to help us appreciate some of the best opening lines in literary history. From the classics of long ago to the latest best-sellers, no matter how old or how recent, everything is fair game on #FirstLineFriday. Let’s see how many of you remember this one.
As always, the rules are simple:
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at 4:00pm, with the title and author of the correct book.
- Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
- Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
- Submissions end at 4:00 P.M. EST, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
- Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any one of my books for themselves, or for someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of the offered books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
- Winners who live elsewhere may request a mobi or PDF file of the same books, since, sadly, Amazon won’t let me gift you from the site.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Put on your thinking caps, because here it is! Today’s opening line:
“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”
Remember, email answers only, please. Thanks! And now off I go to await your guesses.
Well, I’m guessing that this isn’t set in Dickensian London… I do like that these brilliant opening lines are difficult enough to make the challenge feel properly worthwhile. Thanks, Marcia! I’m a bit behind with my emails but I’m getting there… ❤ 🙂 ❤

Glad you enjoy them, Trish, and don’t worry. No one could possibly be farther behind in emails than I! It’s ridiculous, and shameful!! Especially where my good friends are concerned. 😦 But I’m working on it, and trying to get this blog back up to speed with the regular features, too. Thanks for checking out today’s quiz. If the answer comes to you, just drop me an email. I PROMISE I’ll answer it immediately, so you’ll know if you’re right or not! 😀

This one sounds vaguely familiar, but I’m just not thinking of it.

Aw, darn. I thought sure you’d get this one! I had a winner before I could even take my first sip of Earl Grey, and I thought you’d be right on her heels. Keep thinking!! It may come to you, yet. 😀 Good luck! ❤

I have no clue with this one, Marcia. Looking forward to the big reveal later on. Thanks for more Friday Fun! 🙂

Always happy to provide Friday Fun, Harmony! I’ve had a winner with this one, too, which makes me even happier! Stay tuned for the Big Reveal! It may or may not be one you’re familiar with, movie version or book. I’m not sure on this one. But the correct answer appeared in my Inbox within SECONDS of it going live. 😯 😀

I’ve definitely not read this one or else I’d remember a first line like that! Good luck to those who have a guess!

Yeah, it’s one you either know or don’t, I suspect, and with enough clues to trigger your memory if you’ve read it. I had a winner immediately, but so far, no other guesses. I have to admit, I’ve never read this one or seen the movie, so I had no inkling as to how recognizable it might be. I just thought it an interesting way to start a book. 😀

It’s certainly an attention grabber, isn’t it? I’ve never read this book, myself, nor seen the film version, but that line really caught my eye. Stay tuned. Answers will be forthcoming at 4:00pm. 😀
