Two weeks in a row! We’re on a roll with #FirstLineFriday, our little quiz designed to help us appreciate some of the best opening lines in literary history. Told ya I was gonna do my best to catch up on things here at The Write Stuff, and I’m working on it! As usual, from the classics of long ago to the latest best-sellers, everything is fair game on #FirstLineFriday, and I have an interesting and slightly newer line for you today.
As always, the rules are simple:
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at 4:00pm, with the title and author of the correct book.

As I mention above, I suspect you’ll be familiar with the author, even if you haven’t read this book. I’ve read most of his work, and loved every single one, even this one, so I decided to share this offbeat opening line today. Nope. Struck out again! Can’t even get a handle on the author – but I may be intrigued enough by that opening to get the book.

Don’t want to enter but I’m pretty sure I know this one. You know I LOVE first lines. Been yammering on about them my whole life. Did that series on them, like 3-4 years ago. Perhaps time for a new post? 🙂

First lines are intriguing, aren’t they? They are so important, and yet, we often don’t recognize them later. It’s strange. There are plenty of exceptions, of course, but most of us will forget that opening by the time we’ve reached the end of the book. At least, that’s what this quiz has been indicating. Still, taking a look at great opening lines is fun and a chance to study ways to make our own better. Glad you enjoy them! Now send me your guess, so I can give away something else! 😀 ❤

I’m obsessed with opening lines. I love them. I also love an author who uses the first line of each chapter as an opportunity for yet another amazing “opening line”.
I’ve emailed you for fun but let’s see if someone else gets it. I have most of your books. Now I just need to find time to read them. (Plus, I never accept free books. It’s a thing. I prefer to purchase them with all the craziness with Amazon and the “connections” to authors and “knowing” authors. It’s gotten completely out of control.)

Replied to your email a few minutes ago, and just so the whole world knows how brilliant you are, your answer was correct. I’ve suggested a Mobi or PDF file, which is totally out of the Amazon loop, if you’d like to reconsider. But I do understand your concern. Once something goes wrong on Amazon, it can be the devil to straighten out again.
I also love opening lines (obviously) and am really happy to have two folks get this one right, so far. Hopefully, there will be one or two more by 4:00, but already we have TWICE as many correct answers as last time. 😀 Yay! ❤
