Yep, it’s Friday again, and time for another #FirstLineFriday quiz. I’ve chosen something I think might be easier for some of you, but then again, I’ve never guessed right about that yet, so why would it happen today? 😊 Once again, I hope you enjoy this chance to study another opening line considered to be one of the greatest in many Top 100 lists!
As always, the rules are simple:
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at 4:00pm, with the title and author of the correct book.
- Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
- Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
- Submissions end at 4:00 P.M. EST, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
- Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any one of my books for themselves, or for someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of the offered books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
- Winners who live elsewhere may request a PDF file of the same books, since, sadly, Amazon won’t let me gift you from the site.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Here’s today’s opening line:
“To the red country and part of the gray country of Oklahoma, the last rains came gently, and they did not cut the scarred earth.”
Remember, email answers only, please. Thanks! And now off I go to await your guesses.
Easy peasy 😸 A classic I remember from school.

Already got your email and replied. You win, as I’m sure you knew. 😀 Thank goodness. I was getting tired (and sad about) not having any winners the last couple of times. Congratulations! 😀

Aw, I’m sorry it didn’t ring a bell, Teri. (You might have to give yourself a headsmack when you see the answer. It’s pretty famous.) BUT, I’ve found that even in books I’ve read and loved, I don’t always recognize that first line. It’s teaching me to pay more attention to them in general. Thanks for taking a look, anyway, and maybe next week, you’ll know it right off. 😀

I looked it up and I’ve heard of the book (duh, lol), but haven’t read it. I’m surprised we were never required to read it in school.

It’s a classic, for sure, and required reading for many years. You should add it to your TBR pile and check it out one day. Amazing story by an amazing author. 🙂 Hope next week’s choice jumps right out at you! 🙂

Your stab worked, Darlene! Congratulations! I’ve just emailed you back. Woohooo. We already have 3 winners on this one, which makes me happy. I’m always sad when no one guesses correctly. Good job! 🙂

And your aim is true, Mae! You win, of course! Now to figure out what to gift you that you don’t already have. Maybe a download of The Emissary Part 3, when I finish it? Email me later and will figure it out! 🙂 And congratulations! ❤

Recognized this one immediately! Great opening for a great novel! Too late to enter, but I do love these Marcia. They really provide wonderful examples for us as writers. 🙂 Have a fantastic weekend! xo
