It’s been a long time, but finally, our #FirstLineFriday quiz is back! I’m going to be very, very interested in seeing who gets this one, as I’m pretty sure every one of you has heard of this book, though many may not have actually read it. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

As always, the rules are simple:

  1. Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at noon, with the title and author of the correct book. 
  2. Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
  3. Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
  4. Submissions end at noon, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
  5. Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any one of my books for themselves, or for someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of the offered books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
  6. Winners who live elsewhere may request a PDF or Mobi file of the same books, since Amazon won’t let me gift you from the site.

    • Funny thing is, I did read this one, but still would not have recognized that line. And since it’s such a distinctive one, I have to assume the reason I didn’t was because it has been many, MANY years since I read it. That’s my only excuse! 😀 Thanks for stopping by, Trish! 🙂

    • Probably about as famous as they get, I suspect. And yet I wonder how many will remember this line. Hopefully, we’ll get a winner or two. Email me, and I’ll send you a PDF file if you’re in the top 5. 😀

        • I have discovered “should be” and “is” are two very different things. 😀 I definitely knew the author and remember the book fairly well, but I would never have remembered this opening. I should have, yes. But it just didn’t click. We’ll see how many folks have better memories than mine. (Probably most!) 😀

  3. I recognised this one as well, but as I was a recent winner, I’ll let others have a chance. I’d be surprised if you don’t get plenty of replies, Marcia, although I think people might still be recovering from the holidays!

    • I have a feeling it’s going to be trickier than one would think. So far, no one has even made a guess. But we still have 3 more hours before the contest closes, so we’ll see how it does. (And just so you know, there’s no limit on how many times you can win. I may have to think of some different prizes for those who win often, but that’s fine, too.) Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 ❤

  4. Nope, doesn’t sound familiar, but I’m sure I’ve likely heard of the book. The style does seem kind of familiar, though (and like something I would write). I’ll probably kick myself when I see the answer. Glad to see this feature back at last 😸

    • I think this one may turn out to be harder than it should be. We’ll see. And yes, you’ll probably kick yourself. I wouldn’t have been able to answer this, either. Thanks for being happy to see this feature return. I’m happy, too. For one thing, it means I’m feeling much, much better than I did. And for another, I really enjoy finding good lines, and then pondering why they work so well. In a million years, I would never have considered opening a book with a sentence like this one. 😀 Lots to learn from first lines. 😀
