Here it is Friday again, and time for another chance to study an amazing opening line from a well-known book. This time, in addition to seeing if you recognize the line, read it out loud a time or two. Think about how it’s put together, and whether or not it would have pulled you into this book, as a good first line should. And then, have a go at the quiz. You can only enter once each week, but if the line doesn’t ring a bell, feel free to take your best guess. Nothing to lose, and who knows? You might be right.

I don’t recognize this one, but it’s interesting. I’ll have to think on it a bit to try to identify it.

I chose this one because it is so interesting. Very definitely made me curious, and I’ll admit, I’ve never read this book. I’ve certainly heard of it, though, and I’m looking forward to seeing who has read it and recognizes these words. They seem pretty unforgettable to me. 🙂 Good luck, Jeanne!

I find it amazing that no matter how many books I read–and I’ve read several every week of my life for more than 65 years–there are so MANY others out there that I haven’t gotten to yet. Like this one. I do think had I read this, I would probably recognize the first line, as it’s very distinctive. However, I’ve certainly heard of this one, as I imagine most of us have. And now, I find myself wanting to add it to my TBR pile, just to see if the rest of the writing is equal to this wonderful, curiosity-provoking opening line.
The good news is, if we live to be 150 years old, there will always be wonderful books waiting for us to discover. 😀 Yay!!

I’m sorry you don’t recognize this one. It seems to have stumped everyone, but I promise you’ll have heard of the book. At least, I think most will have.
And I’m glad you are paying more attention to opening lines. That can only be a good thing, not only from the perspective of getting more enjoyment out of reading, but also from the perspective of being writers who want to learn to be better and better at our craft. I’ve been blown away by some of the opening lines I’ve read lately, and I hope you are enjoying them, even when they don’t ring a bell.

I’m late this week. Didn’t matter, though. I don’t recognize the quote. It’s compelling, though. I want to know what the wound is and how it was sustained. And the comparison is unique. I’d definitely read on.

Glad you stopped by, Staci, but I’m sorry you don’t know this one. I didn’t recognize it, either, though I’ve sure heard of the book. And your reaction to it is the most important thing, I think. Going forward, I’m going to be concentrating a lot more on creating compelling opening lines for my own books, for sure, and I hope that turns out to be true for everyone.

I think if I’d actually read this book (which is certainly a familiar title to me), I’d remember a line that original. Alas, I haven’t, but I think I’m GOING to, just to see if the rest of the book is as intriguing as the opening line.
