Here it is Friday again, and time for another chance to study an amazing opening line from a well-known book. This time, in addition to seeing if you recognize the line, read it out loud a time or two. Think about how it’s put together, and whether or not it would have pulled you into this book, as a good first line should. And then, have a go at the quiz. You can only enter once each week, but if the line doesn’t ring a bell, feel free to take your best guess. Nothing to lose, and who knows? You might be right.
The rules are simple:
- Be one of the first five people to email me before the game ends at noon, with the title and author of the correct book.
- Do not reply here on the blog. Email only: marciameara16@gmail.com
- Honor System applies. No Googling, please.
- Submissions end at noon, or when I receive 5 correct answers, whichever comes first.
- Winners who live in the U.S. may request a free download of any of my books for themselves or someone of their choice. OR, if they’ve read all of my books, they may request a free download of my next publication.
- Winners who live elsewhere may request a PDF or Mobi file of the same books.
Got your thinking caps on? Then without further ado, here’s today’s #FirstLineFriday poser:
“My wound is geography. It is also my anchorage, my port of call.”
Good luck!
I don’t recognize this one, but it’s interesting. I’ll have to think on it a bit to try to identify it.

I chose this one because it is so interesting. Very definitely made me curious, and I’ll admit, I’ve never read this book. I’ve certainly heard of it, though, and I’m looking forward to seeing who has read it and recognizes these words. They seem pretty unforgettable to me. 🙂 Good luck, Jeanne!

I find it amazing that no matter how many books I read–and I’ve read several every week of my life for more than 65 years–there are so MANY others out there that I haven’t gotten to yet. Like this one. I do think had I read this, I would probably recognize the first line, as it’s very distinctive. However, I’ve certainly heard of this one, as I imagine most of us have. And now, I find myself wanting to add it to my TBR pile, just to see if the rest of the writing is equal to this wonderful, curiosity-provoking opening line.
The good news is, if we live to be 150 years old, there will always be wonderful books waiting for us to discover. 😀 Yay!!

It’s a great first line, but I don’t recognize it:) I’m paying much closer attention to opening lines now!

I’m sorry you don’t recognize this one. It seems to have stumped everyone, but I promise you’ll have heard of the book. At least, I think most will have.
And I’m glad you are paying more attention to opening lines. That can only be a good thing, not only from the perspective of getting more enjoyment out of reading, but also from the perspective of being writers who want to learn to be better and better at our craft. I’ve been blown away by some of the opening lines I’ve read lately, and I hope you are enjoying them, even when they don’t ring a bell.
Thanks for stopping by today. Almost time for me to bring this one to a close. 🙂

I’m late this week. Didn’t matter, though. I don’t recognize the quote. It’s compelling, though. I want to know what the wound is and how it was sustained. And the comparison is unique. I’d definitely read on.

Glad you stopped by, Staci, but I’m sorry you don’t know this one. I didn’t recognize it, either, though I’ve sure heard of the book. And your reaction to it is the most important thing, I think. Going forward, I’m going to be concentrating a lot more on creating compelling opening lines for my own books, for sure, and I hope that turns out to be true for everyone.
Stay tuned for the answer. I’ll try to get the post up shortly after 12:00, though I’m running a wee bit late today. Then we’ll see how many people recognize the book, if not the line. 😀

Oh, I looked it up. I’ve heard of the book. (I’ve seen the movie!) I just didn’t recognize it.

I don’t recognise the quote, but it’s a good one. Thanks, Marcia! Have a lovely weekend 🙂

I think if I’d actually read this book (which is certainly a familiar title to me), I’d remember a line that original. Alas, I haven’t, but I think I’m GOING to, just to see if the rest of the book is as intriguing as the opening line. Stay tuned for the answer, Harmony, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend, too. 🙂

That’s the way it went today, Teri. I have only ONE winner, and she got in during the very last minute. And technically, she wasn’t even playing. But I’m determined to give out a prize, and she’s the one who’s gonna get it! 😀
Stay tuned for the answer, which is coming right up. 🙂

Don’t feel by yourself, Joan. This stumped all you guys, pretty much. Will explain who’s going to win a book when I put up the answer. Hang in there. It’s coming! 😀

Great first line, Marcia! Written by a traveler no doubt… My guess on an author who might have written it is James A. Michener. 🙂

That’s an interesting guess, Bette, and since the contest is already over, I can tell you right up front, it’s not correct. But read on. The next post will give you all the scoop! 😀 (And btw, I hadn’t read the book, so I didn’t recognize the quote, either, though I’m surely familiar with the title. I’ve added it to my TBR pile.) 😀

I’m late, but I had to checkout anyway. I have no clue on this one.
Now I’m off to see the answer and the winners since I know you’ve already posted those!
