#FirstLineFriday Trivia Quiz is Now Closed to Submissions, and the #Winners Are …

Okay, folks. It’s all over but the accolades! This one turned out to be even harder than I expected, but we had two winners: Mae Clair and Robbie Cheadle. Congratulations to them on winning a download of one of my books for themselves or someone else of their choice, or a credit for a free download of my next book.

I promise to go easy on you next Friday with an opening line that won’t be quite as much of a challenge, but for this week, here’s your answer.

“The cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fogs revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting.”

Answer: This is the first line of Stephen Crane’s classic American Civil War novel, The Red Badge of Courage. Lest you think I was giving those in the U.S. an edge, it was also made into an internationally acclaimed film in 1951, starring Audie Murphy, and remade as a successful TV movie in 1974, starring Richard Thomas of The Waltons. 

Because it was an older book than even Fahrenheit 451, I knew it would be a bit more difficult, but I didn’t expect it to be quite as hard as it was. It is, after all, still being sold in bookstores and on Amazon, and I believe there are audio books out as well. It’s also still being studied in some college courses.  See? Classic. 🙂

I DO promise to make next week’s quiz a bit easier on your gray cells, honest. And thanks for playing today. Hopefully #FirstLineFriday 3 just might be the one that makes you smile.

    • There was a time when it was required reading, and though I’m not sure anything is required these days, I did hope some of you younger folks might have read it. It’s definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in history at all, and if you like powerful books about traumatic experiences. I read it at 16 and enjoyed it way back then, and probably should take another look to see if it still impacts me as deeply. 🙂 Thanks for playing Jeanne, and hopefully next week will be one that you recognize right off the bat. (I doubt I’ll be giving clues, though. You can tell I felt guilty for this one being so hard! 😀 😀 😀 )

    • Thanks on their behalf, Darlene. This turned out to be an even trickier one than I thought, but we still managed to get a couple of winners. Next Friday’s quiz will be easier, I promise. (Mark your calendar, and join in the fun!) 🙂

  4. I never would have gotten the answer without your first clue reference to war, Marcia. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read this book, but I know it’s a classic.

    • Well, it DOES say an “army” stretched out on the hills, resting. I thought that might point towards some war, somewhere, though I knew it wasn’t specific. At any rate, you did get it, but I’m not going to do the clue thing anymore. I realized that it would give some folks an advantage over others, depending on when they read the posts. So, either it’s one that a few folks recognize, or we’ll try again the next week. But I’m happy to have had two winners this week, anyway, and EVERYONE will have a fresh chance next Friday! 🙂 That’s the good thing about doing it weekly, I think. 😀

  5. Congrats to Mae and Robbie. Obviously this challenge isn’t working out for me, lol, I keep missing it. I don’t randomly blog hop during the day and get my email notification posts in the evenings, so I lose, lol 🙂

    • I saw this thing at the grocery store once. I think it’s called a “Post-It Note” or something like that. 😀 If you decide you want to play just stick one on your monitor on Thursday night to remind yourself to check The Write Stuff Friday morning. The Quiz will be awaiting you. 😀

      Seriously, sorry it hasn’t worked yet, but perhaps a little reminder will help you remember. You’ll soon be able to win free downloads from more than just my books.     • It’s definitely a classic, and might be worth reading now. I figured I’d start attaching the Buy Links for whatever book I’m featuring on Fridays, so that those who haven’t read them can grab one easily, should they decide to check it out. 🙂
