A Word or Two on Headers

Getting ready to head off for a presentation at Enterprise Museum on “Those Squirrely Guys,” but I wanted to take a minute first to thank you all for the terrific emails I got yesterday on our new Friday feature. I think this is going to turn into something fun, even for those not interesting in winning free books. 😀 You guys rock!

And I also wanted to mention the latest header at the top of the page. I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I change them pretty frequently, because, why not? I have the power! And the same old picture bores me after awhile, so I switch, just for “pretty.” The header above has special significance for me, though, because my daughter took it.

Erin & family have lived in Charleston for the last few years, but decided to relocate to Denver. They rented their house, packed up all their belongings, and hit the road, determined to make the drive west one they’d never forget. They’ve been on the road for 3 weeks, camping at some gorgeous places, and visiting many of America’s most beautiful locations. My favorites so far have been Niagara Falls (which I visited many years ago) and Mt. Rushmore, which I’d dearly love to see. But it was the pictures of the Badlands, themselves, that amazed me the most. I never expected them to be so beautiful.

Now I won’t say they look like a place I’d want to live–which might be why you see no housing developments in the immediate vicinity 😀 –but they are utterly gorgeous. So for the next few days, you’ll have those stunning rock formations with the colorful striations to enjoy. After that, who knows what I’ll put up. I have a plethora of images to choose from, stretching all the way across the country.

  1. Badlands are gorgeous. A perfect header. We had some at the back of our ranch that we used to play in. There are very impressive badlands all over Alberta especially near Drumheller where some amazing dinosaur bones have been found. Amanda and Leah visit the badlands in Amanda in Alberta – The Writing on the Stone.

  3. I used to live in South Dakota when I was a kid, Marcia, and so I’ve seen the Badlands before. They are pretty spectacular. If you’re going to check out Mt. Rushmore someday, then you might as well hop on over to Montana to see Yellowstone and Old Faithful.

    • I like the way you think! I’ll practice my hopping for when the day comes! 😀 America offers a stunning variety of scenery, habitats, and wild places. I’ve seen a fair amount along the east coast, and visited my daughter when she lived in California, so went birding in places like the Anza Borrego desert, but that’s barely scratching the surface of all the wonderful things to see. Maybe I’ll get to a few more, yet! 😀

    • And breathe, and breathe . . . America truly is huge, vast, and any other larger than life adjective you want to use. From one side to the other (or sea to shining sea), SO vastly different in climate, habitat, and natural wonders. Now that long-distance travel is not my favorite thing any more, I wish I’d done more of it. But I’ve still got a few good trips left in me, and will definitely be flying out to Colorado to visit Erin & Crew. So, I’ll see a few more wonders along the way, I’m sure. 🙂

    • Oh, I’m not with them, sadly! I live in central Florida, where it is currently too swelteringly hot and humid to be lovely. They lived in Charleston, South Carolina, also a hot and humid place. So, now they are going where hopefully it will be less so. And when I can’t stand the heat here, I can fly out to visit them! 😀 That’s my sneaky plan! 😀

      • I thought I might have been confused, Marcia, but I was hoping you were in the cool Rocky Mountains for a visit. Oregon has been cold this summer, though today we finally hit 80. I don’t envy that Florida weather. Stay cool!

        • Ha! Not only was I here in hot Florida, our a/c blew up last Wednesday, and we were FIVE straight days before we could get someone to repair it!!! 94 to 95 degrees INSIDE my house the whole time. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. That kind of heat makes me downright sick. But, I survived and the house is blissfully cool again. Now if I can just avoid going outside until about November, all will be well! 🙂

          Cold works for me. Even though I’m a Florida native, I quite like it. 😀 I don’t need Fargo, North Dakota, but autumn in the mountains of North Carolina is my favorite thing in the world. Oh, well. Bloom where you’re planted and all that. 😀

    • Aren’t those mountains gorgeous, Teri? They had a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime trip across the country from South Carolina to Colorado, and arrived in Denver about 2 days ago. So many wonderful stops on their journey, it would be hard to count them all. Everything from an afternoon at a cherry orchard, eating fruit right off the trees to riding on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls. They pulled over at lots of smaller, interesting spots (like duck farms) and camped in some of the most beautiful natural places in the country. I’m so happy they decided to make the move to Colorado as exciting and adventure-filled as possible. Reya is too young to remember much, but Kaelen always will. And Myres & Erin enjoyed it as much as the kids, if not more. 🙂 Yay, them!! 😀
