This morning, I have the pleasure of welcoming Robbie Cheadle to The Write Stuff. Robbie is sharing a review from her book While the Bombs Fell, and I know you’ll enjoy checking it out. Please remember to share far and wide, so lots of new readers will find this one! Thanks!
REVIEW:
7 April 2019
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
Growing up in rural Suffolk during World War Two, Elsie and her family live their lives amid the rumble of German bomber planes and the whine of air-raid sirens. But daily life must continue, and the children and their parents make the most of restricted amenities during wartime.
Along with Elsie Hancy Eaton (whose life inspired the book), Robbie Cheadle has produced an interesting and heart-warming tale about a wartime family and the ups and downs of everyday life as they strive to cope with the constant threat of invasion. The stories reflect the highlights and occasional tragedies that face the family during the war years, as well as the many ingenious ways they find to deal with the limitations of rationing and lack of income. The book includes family photographs from the time and lists several authentic World War Two recipes, such as Potato Pastry and Lord Woolton Pie.
A delightful way for children to learn about wartime Britain.
BLURB:
What was it like for children growing up in rural Suffolk during World War 2?
Elsie and her family live in a small double-storey cottage in Bungay, Suffolk. Every night she lies awake listening anxiously for the sound of the German bomber planes. Often they come and the air raid siren sounds signalling that the family must leave their beds and venture out to the air raid shelter in the garden.
Despite the war raging across the English channel, daily life continues with its highlights, such as Christmas and the traditional Boxing Day fox hunt, and its wary moments when Elsie learns the stories of Jack Frost and the ghostly and terrifying Black Shuck that haunts the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.
Includes some authentic World War 2 recipes

Thanks for sharing, Marcia. I agree it’s a terrific book.
Wordpress won’t let me “like” or comment on most blogs (it’s weirdly random), but maybe I can get around that via the Reader. Yet another WordPress pain in the rear…
Have a good week. Hugs!

A fascinating glimpse into a time I was born into, but too young to remember…

It’s funny you said that, for the sound of the sirens really upsets me, so a part of me does remember…

Not to worry. This will (hopefully) be a long-running feature, and available for your participation at any time that’s good for you. I post 2 reviews each Tuesday (morning and afternoon) so they won’t get lost in a mad posting frenzy. And I schedule them in the order I receive the requests. So basically, you can share your favorite or newest reviews whenever you have the time and inclination. We’d be delighted. 🙂

This is a wonderful review of Robbie’s book. Congratulations, Robbie. I got the copy last year and I better do my reading because this is so interesting. My parents didn’t experience WWII because they escaped to China when Japanese took over Hong Kong and British withdrew all officials during the war.
It’s so precious to hear stories from parents during those scary time.
Thank you, Marcia for featuring Robbie. ❤

It is very interesting to hear stories from people who went through these tough times, Miriam. I am sure it was not easy for your parents in China during the war either. There story must be quite unique and interesting.

The stories could have been interesting. Too bad I didn’t hear them when I was still in Hong Kong. They didn’t want to talk about them.
