What comes first in your writing, the plot or the characters?
Characters. Every time. I think about someone that would probably have an interesting story to tell, like an eco-tour boat captain and a wildlife photographer. I know they’ll provide me with lots of background I’m familiar with, and I have a feel for who they are before I begin to build a mystery or drama around them.
In the case of my second Wake-Robin Ridge book, A Boy Named Rabbit, a little boy alone in the wilderness came into my mind as I was falling asleep one night. I could swear I heard Sarah Gray (from Book 1) tell me he needed for his story to be told, and by the time I woke up, I knew exactly who he was and why he was alone. Thanks, Deb! Yeah, marketing is tricky, and I’ll probably always struggle with it. However, I completely stopped doing ANY for more than a year, and that has got to be addressed. So, I’m working on it and before too much longer, hope to have a new plan of some kind underway. Of course, I suspect marketing is one of those things that you have to continually re-address and update, especially regarding ever-changing social media and available marketing tools. New stuff comes, old stuff goes away, and you have to be on top of it to make it all work well for you.
I wouldn’t mind, except all of it takes away from my writing time, but I’m sure this is an issue every writer today faces, especially indies. If I find strategies that work well, I’ll be sharing them here. In the meantime, I’m running a sale starting today. Stay tuned for details! 😀
