Time for another one from Mac’s adventures, those many summers ago. Hope you enjoy it.
Ambush
by Marcia Meara
Silent, sleek, deadly,
The predator climbs high, high,
And stretches out full length
On the smooth, sturdy limb.
Well hidden within heavy green foliage,
His wait begins.
Panting slightly as the sun climbs
And dappled light pierces the shade.
Heat rises, but keen eyes miss nothing
And sharp ears catch the first soft footfalls
Of unsuspecting prey, moving quietly
Down a curve of narrow trail.
Patience is everything.
Lie still, still, still!
No slight movement to cause alarm.
Hunger growing, mouth watering at
The smell of food coming ever closer.
Body tenses, ready to leap.
Humans are slow, pitiful creatures.
Lacking panther senses to warn them
Of danger lying overhead.
Teeth bared, growls erupting,
Body drops downward,
Ready for the kill.
With a shout, the man falls,
Hand over his heart.
You got me, you little panther, you!
Don’t eat my fingers!
Don’t eat my toes!
I brought you peanut butter and jelly.
Gotcha good, didn’t I, Dad?
I was patient, like you taught me.
Grabbing a sandwich, he dances away,
Calling over his shoulder,
Race you to the pond now!
After lunch, I want to be a fish.

Thanks! It’s one of my own favorites, too. π (I’m allowed to have those, right?) π

I feel I’m really getting to know the young Mac.

I hope that’s a good thing. π He was a fun-loving, happy kid, with doting parents, and yet, he ended up withdrawn from the world, living alone on his mountaintop, with no one but his Irish wolfhound for company. His dad was right that he’d never be able to protect his boy from the things life would throw at him. But in the end, there’s no force on earth greater than the redemptive power of love. (That’s my story, an’ I’m stickin’ to it!) π

I guess none of us can protect our kids from whatever nasty surprises life has in store for them.It was easier when the worst thing was a scraped knee which good be kissed better. I’m looking forward to the next book about Mac – well, about Rabbit, really. Just saying…

You’ll be glad to know, then, that I’m on CH 12 of the draft, approaching the halfway mark. I should have already written it, edited it, and gotten it published, but did I mention we had a little trouble with a hurricane recently? π π π

Yay! So pleased to hear that. Hurricane? What hurricane? π I think you’ve done amazingly to get over all of that and be half way through the next book.

I’ve continued to plug away, but this time around there’s no 3 or 4 chapters a week being drafted. More like 3 or 4 weeks to draft ONE. Gleep. I’m hoping that I’ll pick up speed here REAL soon. Rabbit is counting on me! See, there are these mysterious floating lights way out in the middle of nowhere, over Brown Mountain . . . . . . .
(There really ARE, actually, that no one has ever figured out, so “Step aside, folks. Rabbit’s on the job!” π )

Thanks, Kass. I’ve been taking shortcuts for the last few days, posting poetry from Summer Magic. My cold is finally considering easing up on me, so I’ll have to quit slacking off soon, I guess. But I still have a couple more I want to share, so maybe not today. π

You have certainly had good reasons to “slack off” this past year. Glad the hurricane stuff is finally behind you and the cold is letting up. Happy writing!

Good riddance to the hurricane for sure, but I could have used another few months of cool weather, myself. But, hey. No surprises there, so I’ll just be glad for a reprieve from STORMS, at least for a while. π β€

Ha! I wondered if anyone took the “bait.” π So glad you enjoyed it, Tina! I really did love writing the first part of this little book. Mac as a boy was ALMOST as good a subject as Little Rabbit is now. π Thanks for taking a minute to let me know. Got a real change of pace one for you for tomorrow. β€

If you ever need anyone to take the bait, Marcia, I’m your girl! I can be as gullible as I am astute π β€

Can’t wait to meet Mac, the boy, because I like the man very much. And it is interesting to see how much you are into this character, Marcia. Loved the poem. π

I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for meeting Mac the boy through these poems. It’s one reason I wrote them. His childhood is only briefly mentioned here and there in Wake-Robin Ridge, and I really wanted to explore his relationship with his dad and his beloved mountain ridge, so, I wrote the Mac at Ten poems. But as of right now, the only little boy in the series is Rabbit, and he’s about all I can handle. That boy lives in my brain and talks to me all the time, so if you haven’t read books 2 and 3 of the series, you might enjoy them. π Thanks so much for such kind comments, Lynn. I really appreciate your taking the time to read these and let me know your thoughts! π β€

Read them all and left a review. Missing them all.

I remember seeing a review from you, but couldn’t recall which book(s) it was for. THANK YOU for doing so! I truly appreciate that, and I LOVE that you are missing them. You’ll be happy to know I’m working on WRR#4, which features the (real life) mystery of the Brown Mountain lights. Rabbit is intrigued by those and has some thoughts on them, as he always does. π And other mysteries are afoot as well, plus a few new characters have been introduced, some of which will be back in other books, I think. π Hope you’ll enjoy it when it comes out. Not going to make my original deadline of publishing by “late spring,” I’m afraid, but it will be as soon as possible, for sure. π β€
