#NationalPoetryMonth – #SummerMagic: Poems of Life & Love

I’ve been told it’s National Poetry Month, and who am I to argue with a lead-in like that? In celebration, I thought I’d share one of  my poems from Summer Magic: Poems of Life & Love. Since it’s been hovering around 83 to 85 degrees here for a couple of weeks, I figured a summery one was in order. Hope you enjoy it! 🙂

The Rope Swing

Sailing up, up into
Blue summer sky,
Hot rope rough against his hands,
He shouts with joy, and lets go.
For a crystal moment,
He hangs suspended,
Frozen in time
Like a fly in amber.
All awkward angles–
Shoulderblades and
Elbows, and
Knobby knees,
Painted against the sky,
Heart filled with fierce joy.

Dropping, down, down
Into clear green water
Cold on his skin,
He sinks to the silty bottom,
And sits suspended
In an alien world,
Watching  the silvered flashes
Of tiny fish darting to and fro,
Startled by his sudden appearance.
I am a fish, too, he thinks,
And holds his breath
As long as he can.

Finally, he rockets up,
Through a stream of
Tickling bubbles,
Breaking the
Surface of the water,
With a loud whoop of
Childish exuberance,
All thoughts of becoming a fish
Forgotten as he
Scrambles out,
Shakes the water from his hair,
And, grinning, hitches up his
Baggy shorts.

He’s ready
To do it all again.
Flying through the summer air,
Dropping into the cold water
To commune with fishes
Silvered in refracted light,
Then leaping to the surface,
A boy of ten once more,
Laughing through an endless summer
Made perfect by a cool green pond,
And an old rope swing.

    • Thank you so much, Mae. I’m really glad you liked it. The first half of the little book is called “Mac At Ten,” and the poems are all about Mac spending his summers in the mountains with his dad, and some of their adventures. I’ve written poetry all my life, but none that make me smile bigger than thinking of MacKenzie Cole as a ten-year-old boy, camping in those mountains I love so much. 😀

    • Thanks for such a nice comment, Darlene! I’m glad you enjoyed it. As I mentioned to Mae, the first half of Summer Magic is about my leading male character from Wake-Robin Ridge, as a boy of ten. He spent every summer camping in the mountains with his dad, and gave me many ideas for poems on everything from story-telling to meteor showers. I had a lot of fun writing that book. 😀 ❤

    • Thank you, Audrey! Heck, my characters moved out of my imagination and set up house in the middle of my brain. ALL of them! They are always noisy and opinionated, but they are also funny and often inspiring. 😀 And while we don’t meet Mac as a boy in the Wake-Robin Ridge series, I’ve always loved the idea of him learning to treasure the mountains because of his childhood camping trips with his dad. So, writing poems about those early times in his life was another way for me to learn more about who he is, and why he’s so attached to his home on the top of the Ridge.

      Thanks for your comments on the cover, too. My best friend, Nicki Forde, is a very talented graphics designer, and she does all my covers. If you check the right-hand sidebar on this page, you can see what beautiful work she does. The Summer Magic cover is just that–magical. At least it is , to me, though I confess I think every one of her covers is perfect for the book it represents. Nicki’s a GEM!!     • Thanks, Robbie. It’s one of my personal favorites, simply because it’s such an exuberant moment, and I like thinking of MacKenzie Cole as a happy child, since life went awry for him in his early adulthood, and it took so long for him to find joy again. Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

    • Welcome back, Deb!! So good to see you here, though I’m afraid I’ve been MIA again, myself. (Various things going on, still, to keep me away from my blogs and my writings. It’s a conspiracy, I tell ya!) I’m really glad you enjoyed the book. Poetry was my first love, and will always be something I truly enjoy! Because my time is so limited this week, I’m taking advantage of National Poetry Month to share a few verses from the book. But hopefully, next week will see a return to something more normal around here. (Seems like I’ve been saying that since Hurricane Irma dropped that tree on us, but I keep thinking things will lighten up!) 🙂 Glad to see you back here and there, though. You were missed! 🙂 ❤

      • Thanks Marsh. And I totally get it. The planets have been in a disarray for most of this new year, wreaking havoc on do many aspects of all of our lives. You are not alone. Keep up the fight my friend. The sun will eventually come out. (That was a metaphor. as I know you have lots of sun where you live, lol). Here, we’re having ice storms in mid April!!!! 🙂 ❤
