Learn how to make fondant poppies

A number of people have admired these poppies and have asked me how I made them. In response, Gregory and I made a YouTube video of how to make fondant poppies. It is easiest to use a poppy petal cutter to make these flowers but if you don’t have one, you can draw the petals onto wax paper, cut them out and use this as a stencil to cut out the petal shapes.

We use the poppies we made for this video to decorate a simple cake for a friend’s birthday.

  1. What a great post to wake up to, Robbie! So happy you shared your talent with us, and I’m utterly in awe of the things you make. And a You Tube video is a wonderful idea. I’m sharing far and wide, and hope everyone else does, as well. And your little creations are so cute, I hope you’ve also made them with Sculpey or clay, so you have permanent ones to keep on a shelf?

    Also, am I the only one going right for my creepiest Wicked Witch of the West voice, and crooning, “Poppies . . . poppies . . . poppies will put them to sleeeep.” 😀

      • I’m a bit of a WOZ fanatic, I’m afraid. Like, totally. Collection pieces scattered everywhere, and all. So, that’s where my mind went as soon as I saw the poppies! 😀 You did a great job. I’m not sure if I’m cut out for making videos. It’s best if I don’t ever SEE myself. I’d probably quit doing so many presentations, if I knew just how dorky I really am. But YOU, my dear, were beautiful, and a pleasure to watch! 🙂

  3. Okay, I’ve now watched the entire video, and if I actually baked, or cooked (beyond the basics required to keep my husband fed), I would be SO able to do this!! Loved your demonstration, and I’m even more impressed with what you’ve done. And to combine your artistry with children’s books is absolutely brilliant, Robbie! Once again, I thank you for sharing this with us! I have a niece-in-law who is going to love this! She does fabulous things with cakes and fondant, too. Now she can add poppies, so that when she makes me a Wizard of Oz cake one day, she can put them around the base. Hahaha.

  6. What a nice demo Robbie, you have such a soft voice! Poppies are looking so resplendent! This reminds me of our play dough and the things we create everyday with my little grandchildren. How I wish there could be that much of patience and poise, which is being displayed at the table. 🙂 Wonderful video.

  8. I enjoyed seeing Robbie’s video! Her family is all so talented – it would take me much longer to form those poppies! I like the idea of them for atop a cake or for Remembrance Day here in Canada. Thanks Marcia for having her over here

    • Robbie is always welcome here. Poppies are a symbol of our Memorial Day, here in the U.S. I think you are right that it would be lovely to have a Memorial Day cake decorated with them. Great idea, Christy! And glad you enjoyed Robbie’s post and video. 🙂
